OptiTire™wasspeciallydevelopedtoreducetherunningcostsforeetsand
increasesafety.
Reduced downtimes, extended tire life
Theneedtomaintainthecorrecttirepressureseemsself-evident,butinreality
thetirepressureischeckedfartooinfrequently.Timepressure,inattention
andcomplacencyaresomeofthereasonsforthis.Anofcialstudyhasfound
thatmorethan30%ofalltruckbreakdownsarecausedbytireissues.Further
studieshaveshownthateven15%over-orunder-inationcanreducethelifeof
atirebymorethan10%.
Withunder-inatedtiresthereisanincreasedriskofsustainedoverheating.

Transmission types
TodisplaytheOptiTireTMdataofthetrailerinthedriver’scabin,boththetrailer
andtowingvehiclemustbeequippedwithOptiTireTMincombinationwiththe
externalsensorWM2ifcommunicationisimplementedviaradiolink.
Alternatively,thetrailerdatacanbedisplayedinthetowingvehicleifitis
equippedwithanintegrateddisplay.Whenthetrailerisalsoequippedwith
WABCOTrailerEBS,thedatacantransferredtothetowingvehicle’scentral
computerviaCAN.

Stand-alone trailer towing operation
IfthetrailershouldbeindependentlyequippedwithOptiTireTM,thepressure
releasecanbecarriedoutviatelemetryorthevehiclesowndisplay.When
usingtheOptiTireTMdisplay,itrequiresaspecialboxforsplashprotection
oranotherprotectedinstallationposition.TheWABCOSmartBoardcanbe
installedasanalternative.
ThedrivercannotreceivefaultmessageswithoutOptiTireTMsupportwhilethe
towingvehicleisinmotion.

4.3.1 OptiTireTM in trailer operation
Operating mode
TheOptiTireTMsysteminthetraileroperatesself-sufcientlyifsuppliedwith
power.
TirepressurescanbedisplayedwiththeSmartBoard.Inaddition,thetire
pressureinformationistransmittedtothetowingvehicleviatheISO7638CAN
connection.
!NotalltowingvehiclesdisplaythetirepressurestransmittedviaCANinthe
dashboard.Pleasecontactthemanufacturerofthetowingvehicleifyouhave
anyquestionsonthissubject.
Alternativelythetrailer’stirepressurescanbetransmittedtotheOptiTireTM in
thetowingvehiclebymeansofaradio.
Thiswirelesstransmissioncanonlyoccuriftheexternalsensorsarecongured
onbothvehicles.
Apartfromthedisplayoftrailertiredatainthetowingvehicle,thisdatacanalso
betransmitteddirectlytothehaulagecompanybymeansoftelematics.The
combinationofOptiTireTMwithTX-TRAILERGUARDTMisofparticularinterestif
thetraileristransportedbysubcontractorsorrentedtothirdparties.
Automatic trailer recognition
ThetowingvehicleECUautomaticallydetectsthecombinationwithatrailer
ECU:Thestoplightisenabledontowingvehicleandtrailerwhenhittingthe
brake.ThetrailerECUradiosasignalwiththisvoltagepulsethatisexpected
bythetowingvehicle'sECUthatinstant.Thetowingvehiclethusclearlydetects
thatthetrailerbelongstothetractor/trailercombinationandsubsequently
transmitstrailerECUmessagestothedisplay.
Astrailersareusuallynotpermanentlypowered,itispossiblethatduetothe
frequencyofsensortransmissionthetirepressuredataforallthewheelsofthe
trailerisnotavailableinthedisplayforupto21minutesafterstartingthedrive–
dependingonthesensorused.
