1.1 Important information on this Operator’s Manual
The Operator’s Manual is stored in the storage bin at the rear of the seat.
This Operator’s Manual contains important information on how to work safely, correctly,
and economically with the machine. Therefore, it aims not only at new personnel, but it
also serves as a reference for experienced personnel. It helps to avoid hazardous situa-
tions and reduce repair costs and downtimes. Furthermore, the reliability and the service
life of the machine will be increased by following the instructions in the Operator’s Manual.
This is why the Operator’s Manual must always be kept at hand in the machine.
Your own safety, as well as the safety of others, depends to a great extent on how the
machine is moved and operated. Carefully read the Operator’s Manual before putting the
machine into operation. This Operator’s Manual will help to familiarize yourself more easily
with the machine, thereby enabling you to use it more safely and efficiently.
Follow chapter “Safety Instructions” in particular. As a rule, keep the following in mind:
Careful and prudent working is the best way to avoid accidents!
Operational safety and readiness of the machine do not only depend on your skill, but also
on maintenance and servicing of the machine. This is why regular maintenance and ser-
vicing is absolutely necessary.
Extensive maintenance and repair work must always be performed by a Wacker Neuson
service center. Use only original spare parts for repairs. This ensures operational safety
and readiness of your machine, and maintains its value.
• Special equipment and superstructures are not described in this Operator’s Manual.
• We reserve the right to improve the technical standard of our machines without
adapting the Operator’s Manual.
• Modifying Wacker Neuson products and fitting them with additional equipment and
attachments not included in our delivery program requires Wacker Neuson’s written
authorization, otherwise warranty and product liability for possible damage caused by
these modifications shall not be applicable.
• Subject to modifications and printing errors.
Your Wacker Neuson dealer will be pleased to answer any further questions regarding the
machine or the Operator’s Manual.

Introduction
1.3 Brief description
The model 1404 excavator is a self-propelled work machine.
Get informed on and follow the legal regulations of your country.
This machine is a versatile and powerful helper for moving earth, gravel and debris on con-
struction sites and elsewhere. A wide range of attachments accounts for the numerous
applications of the machine, among others hammer and grab applications.
See chapter 1.4 Fields of application, attachments for further applications.
The main components of the machine are:
• ROPS (Roll Over Protective Structure) tested canopy (open version)
• ROPS (Roll Over Protective Structure) tested cab (closed version, option)
• Model 1404: water-cooled Yanmar three cylinder diesel engine
• Sturdy steel sheet chassis Rubber mounted motor
Notice!
The machine can be equipped with the “Telematic” option (for transmitting oper-
ating data, location, etc. via satellite)!
Traveling drive The diesel engine permanently drives the gear pump whose oil flow is sent to a hydraulic
motor.
Operating hydraulics The diesel engine drives the joint gear pump for the work hydraulics. The oil flow of this
pump depends on the diesel engine speed only.
Cooling system The indicator lights in the instrument panel of the machine ensure constant monitoring of
the engine and hydraulic oil temperature, as well as of the coolant temperature and level.
Cab (ROPS) Modifying or performing improper repair work on the cabin is dangerous. Do not modify the
cabin. Repair work may only be performed by a Wacker Neuson service center. If the cab
has been damaged, check it before resuming work and have it repaired if necessary.
Please contact a Wacker Neuson dealer for support. Failure to follow this precautionary
measure can lead to serious or fatal injuries. The cab has been specially designed for the
driver’s protection in case of an accident.
Fasten your seat belt, otherwise you can be thrown around or even outside the cab and
crushed. Therefore always fasten your seat belt as you drive and work with the machine.
Tighten the seat belt before putting the machine into operation.

1.4 Fields of application, attachments
The attachments will decide in the first place how the excavator is used.
Caution!
In order to avoid damage to the machine, only the attachments listed below
have been certified for installation on the machine.
☞Please contact an authorized workshop if you wish to use other attach-
ments.
Using tools of other manufacturers, or tools which have been released for other excavator
types, can reduce the machine’s output and stability considerably, and can also cause
damage to the machine and injuries to the operator or the personnel.
Always compare the weight of the attachment and its maximum payload with the indica-
tions in the lift capacity table. Never exceed the maximum payload stated in the lift capac-
ity table.

1.5 Regulations
Requirements to be met by the operator
Earth moving machines may be driven and serviced only by persons who meet the follow-
ing requirements:
• 18 years or older
• Physically and mentally suited for this work
• Persons have been instructed in driving and servicing the earth moving machine and
have proven their qualifications to the contractor
• Persons are expected to perform work reliably.
Persons have been appointed by the contractor for driving and servicing the earth moving
machine.
Observe the legal regulations of your country.
Operator qualification and requirements for safe operation
Among other things, safe machine operation depends on the following points:
• Machine model and its equipment
• Machine maintenance
• Work and driving speed.
• Nature of ground and work environment
The most important points are the operator’s qualification and power of judgement. A well-
trained operator following the Operator’s Manual and maintenance plan ensures a long
service life and durability of the machine.
Specific training enables the operator to acquire, among other things, the following skills:
• The correct assessment of work situations.
• The feel for the vehicle
• Recognition of potential hazardous situations
• Safe working by making the correct decisions for man, vehicle and the environment.
The operator is at risk if the machine is not operated correctly.
Follow the operating procedures and instructions described for the machine.
Access to the machine or machine operation is prohibited for children and persons under
the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medicine.

Introduction
7/8-digit serial number (up to 2012)
17-digit serial number (from 2012)
For easier machine identification, Wacker Neuson introduced a 17-digit serial number for
compact equipment in 2012 (for example for excavators). This serial number includes
additional data, for example, the manufacturer code and the production site.
Notice!
Wacker Neuson components (for example, Easy Lock, offset bucket, rollbar) have
numeric serial numbers only.
Cabin number
The type label is located at the upper left of the cab frame.
