1. Introduction
Specialistdealersandinstallationengineersshouldreadthroughtheseinstructionscarefullypriortothe
installation,maintenanceandoperationofourWINAICOWSPandWSTseries.Carefullyadheringtothe
instructionswillensurethatthephotovoltaicsystemdeliversthemaximumyieldduringoperationonalong‐
termbasis.Failuretoobservetheseinstructionscanleadtopersonalinjuryanddamagetoproperty.WINAICO
onlysellsitshigh‐qualitymodulestospecialistcompaniesandinstallationengineersthroughdirectsales.
WINAICOsolarmodulesmayonlybeinstalledbysuchspecialists.Duringthemountingprocessitisnecessary
toadheretotheapplicablevalidstandards(VDE,VDEW,DIN,TAB,buildingregulations,accidentprevention,
etc.).Allworkonphotovoltaicsystemsrequirestheappropriatespecialistknowledgeandmustthereforebe
undertakenbyauthorisedspecialistpersonnelexclusively.Unqualifiedpersonsmustbekeptatadistance,in

Solarmodulesstarttogenerateelectricityassoonastheyareexposedtolight.Itishazardoustoyourhealthto
touchamodulewithavoltageof30voltsormore.Everyseriesorparallelconnectionofthemodulesincreases
thevoltageorelectriccurrentrespectively.Seriesconnectionofmorethantwosolarmodulescangenerate
life‐threateningvoltages:Highvoltage!Thefullyinsulatedplug‐incontactsdoprovidecontactprotection,
however,youshouldneverthelessobservethefollowingwhenhandlingphotovoltaicmodules:
Donotinsertelectricallyconductivepartsintotheplugsandsockets.
Donotinstallsolarmodulesandwiringwithwetplugsandsockets.
Workingconditionsandtoolsmustbedry.
Allworkonandconnectionofthewiringmustbecarriedoutbyauthorisedspecialistpersonnelwith
theutmostcautionandonlywiththeaidofsafetyequipment.
Highvoltagesmaybepresentinwiring,modulesandinvertersevenwhentheseareswitchedoff.
Undertakeallworkwiththeappropriatelevelofcaution–riskofdeathduetoelectriccurrent!
Afterswitchingofftheinverter,beforebeginninganyfurtherworkitisessentialtowaitforthetime
intervalspecifiedbythemanufacturersothatthehigh‐voltagecomponentscandischarge.
Besuretocarefullyfollowtheinvertermanufacturer’sinstallationinstructions!
WINAICOmodulesarequalifiedforapplicationclassA.Hazardousvoltages(IEC61730:higherthan50VDC;
EN61730:higherthan120VDC),hazardouspowerapplications(higherthan240W)wheregeneralunrestricted
accessisanticipated.ModulesqualifiedforsafetythroughENIEC61730‐1and61730‐2withinthisapplication
classareconsideredtomeettherequirementsforSafetyClassII).

Undertheanticipatedconditions,aPVmodulecansupplyahighercurrentand/orvoltagethanspecifiedinthe
standardisedtestconditions.
Todeterminethevoltageratingvaluesofcomponents,currentratingvaluesofconductors,fusesizesand
ratingofcontrollersconnectedtotheoutputsofPVmodules,thevaluesofISCandUOSspecifiedonthe
moduleshouldthereforebemultipliedbyafactorof1.25.Thehighestratingvaluefortheovercurrent
protection(reverse‐currentstrength)is15A.
4. Transportandstorage
Checktheshipmentimmediatelyupondeliverytoensurecompletenessandintegrity.Noteanydamageonthe
driver’sconsignmentnoteandinformWINAICOinwritingimmediately.Theutmostcareisrequiredwhen
handlingthemodules.Takecarewhenunpacking,transportingandstoringthem.
Storethemodulessafelyincoolanddryrooms.Thepackagingisnotweatherproof!
Leavemodulesintheirpackaginguntiltheyaretobeinstalled.
Donotstackthemodules.
Carrythemoduleswithbothhandsoruseglasssuctioncupsforremovalandtransport.
Undernocircumstancesusetheconnectionsocketorconnectionlinesashandles.
Donotsetthemodulesdownroughlyonhardgroundandthemodulecorners.

5. Applicationareaandmountingsite
Applicationarea
Modulesareintendedforuseintemperateclimaticconditions.
Themodulemustnotbeexposedtoconcentratedlight.Itmustnotbeimmersedinwateror
constantlyexposedtowaterspray(e.g.fromfountains).
Thereisriskofcorrosionwithexposuretosalt(recommendeddistancefromthesea2000m)and
sulphur(sulphursources,volcanoes).
Thepermissiblemoduletemperaturesarebetween‐40°Cand+90°C.
Sufficientventilationfrombehindshouldbeensuredtopreventraisedmoduletemperatures.
Donotsubjectmodulestostrongchemicals.
Makesurethatthemodulesandmodulecomponentsareneverstandingorlyinginwater.
Themodulemaynotbeinstalledadjacenttonakedflamesorflammablematerials.
Solarmodulesarenon‐explosion‐protectedequipment.
Mountingsite
Orientation
Thesolarmoduleshouldbemountedfacingtowardsthesouthifpossible.Thisresultsinthebest
electriccurrentyield.Alternatively,thesolarmodulecanbeorientatedtowardsthepathofthesun.
Thegradientofthemodulesshouldbeatleast15°.InCentralEuropeagradientof30°isoptimal.
Location
Themountingsiteshouldbeasfreeaspossiblefromshadeofanykind(houses,trees,branches,
leaves,cables,antennas,etc.)shadecansignificantlyreducetheoutputofthesolarmodules.Partial
shadewillalsoreducetheelectriccurrentyield.Amoduleisregardedasfreeofshadeiftheentire
surfaceisfreeofshadethroughouttheyearandifunhinderedexposuretosunlightoveraperiodof
severalhoursperdayispossibleevenonthemostunfavourabledaysoftheyear.
Ventilationfrombehind
Theoutputofsolarmodulesproducedbyanymanufacturerdecreasesconsiderablyasthemodules
heatup.Ventilationfrombehind preventsaperformance‐reducingheatbuild‐up.Thisisespecially
trueforourmoduleswithablackfilmontherearandablackframe.Forthisreason,sufficientspace
betweenthemodulesandtheroofsurfacemustbeensuredduringmountingtoprovidesufficient
coolingofthemoduleswithanairdraught.
Winter
Whenmountingthemodulesitisessentialtoensurethatthewaterdrainopeningsatthe
cornersofthemodulesarenotcoveredinordertoavoiddamagefromfrost.
Thesolarinstallationshouldbemountedsuchthataslittlesnowaspossiblecanremainonthe
modules.SolarmodulesfromWINAICOarecertifiedforsnowloadsofupto5400PA.

6. Mountingandinstallation
ATTENTION:Riskoffireifmodulecomponentsaredamaged!
Onlyinstallundamagedsolarmodules.
Beforetheinstallationensurethattheconnectionsocket,cableandconnectorareundamaged.
Neveropentheconnectionsocket.
Safetyprecautions
Storethemodulessafelyincoolanddryrooms.Thepackagingisnotweatherproof!
Incorporatetheinstallationintheexistinglightningprotectionsysteminlinewithlocalrequirements.
WINAICOrecommendsonlymountingandinstallingthesystemindryweather.
Observetherelevantaccidentpreventionregulations.
Donotcarryoutinstallationworkinhighwinds.
Secureyourselfandotherpersonsagainstfalling.
Preventthepossibilityoffallingobjects.
Securetheworkareasothatnootherpersonscanbeinjured.Keepchildrenawayfromtheinstallation
site.
Allpartsofthemoduleshouldbeprotectedfrommechanicalloading(e.g.causedbypressure,tension,
torsionalstress)duringtransportandinstallation.Ensurethattheradiusdoesn'tfallbelowthe
minimumpermissiblebendradiusof60mmforcablesattheconnectionsocketoutputeitherduring
installationorsystemoperation.
Fireprotection
Theinstallationofon‐roofsystemscanaffectthefiresafetyofabuilding;improperinstallationscanresultina
hazardincaseoffire.Inthecaseofon‐roofapplications,theWINAICOmodulesmustbemountedaboveafire‐
resistantsurface.
Themoduleis“non‐explosion‐protectedequipment”.Therefore,itmaynotbeinstallednearhighlyflammable
gasesandvapours(e.g.fillingstations,gastanksorpaintsprayingsystems).Themodulemaynotbeinstalled
adjacenttonakedflamesorflammablematerials.

6.1Mechanicalmodulemounting
WINAICOmodulesaresuitableforbothverticalandhorizontalinstallationduetotheirhighdegreeofstability,
inparticularthatoftheframe.Themodulesmustbeclampedinplaceataminimumof4points.Theframehas
onlybeenstresstestedforfasteningbythelongsides.Thereforealwaysclampthemodulesonthelongsides
only.Themodulesmustalwaysbeinstalledwiththeconnectionsocketpointingupward,suchthatthe
connectionsocketislocatedontherearsideofthemoduleintheuppersection.

Themodulescanbemountedtothesubstructurebyclampinginplacefromthefrontorscrewingonfrom
behind.Theclampingarea(ExampleA)foreachfasteningpointmustencompassanareaofatleast135mm2.A
torquewrenchmustbeusedforassembly.Intheexamplesshown,thetighteningtorque(usingM8bolts
producedfromV2A)is20Nm.Usetheexistingdrilledholesforsecuringthemodule;donotdrillanyadditional
holes(doingsowillvoidtheproductwarranty).Useappropriatecorrosion‐resistantfasteningmaterials.

Maximummechanicalload
Ensurethatthemaximummechanicalloadisnotexceeded,inparticularwhilealsotakingintoaccountthesite‐
dependentloads(e.g.windandsnow).Pleasenotethatthemodulecanbendunderheavyloads.Donotuse
cableties,fasteningelementsetc.betweentherearsideofthemoduleandthecrossprofilesbecausepointed
orunevenstructurescandamagethemodule.
Note
Themiddleclampscanbeusedasspacersbetweenthemodulerowswhenmountingthemodules.Toavoid
anypossiblestressesandfailuretocomplywithdimensions,agapshouldbemaintainedbetweenthemodule
rows.Werecommendagapofapproximately2cm.Foraestheticreasonswerecommendusingblackclamps
formountingourmoduleserieswithblackanodisedframeandblackfilm.
Layingthecables
Toavoidconductorloops,thestrings(+and–)shouldbelaidtogether.Thecablegrooveonthecrossprofile
canbeusedhere.Ifpossibleroofpenetrationshouldonlybeatonepoint.

6.2Electricalinstallation
Choiceofmodule
Ensurethemodulemeetsthetechnicalrequirementsofthesystemasawhole.Ensurethatothersystem
componentsdonotexertdamagingmechanicalorelectricalinfluencesonthemodule.Whenconnectedin
series,modulesmustallhavethesameamperage.Whenconnectedinparallel,themodulesmustallhavethe
samevoltage.Themodulesmustnotbeconnectedtogethertocreateavoltagehigherthanthepermitted
systemvoltage.Modulesmustnotbefittedasoverheadglazingorverticalglazing(façade).Ensurethatthe
mountingsystemcanalsowithstandtheanticipatedloads,e.g.windandsnowloads.Thereareopeningsatthe
baseofthemoduleframetoallowwaterfromprecipitationtodrainaway.Ensurethatthefunctionalityof
theseopeningsisnotrestrictedbytheformatofthemoduleinstallation.
Diodesandfuses
Theshadingofindividualsolarcellsorsolarmodulescanleadtotheshadedareaheatingupbecauseinthis
caseelectricalenergy,generatedbyotherpartsofthePVsystem,isusedinthedarkenedmodulearea.Theuse
ofbypassdiodesorothertechnicalelementstobridgetheshadyareasresultsinareductioninthewarmingup
processandinthelossofperformanceoftherespectivePVsystem.WINAICOsolarmodulesarefactory‐fitted
withintegratedbypassdiodesorotherdesignelements,whichofferefficientprotectiontothecells.
Ifitshouldbenecessarytoconnectthemodulestringsinparallelthenpleaseproceedasfollows:
Selectoneofthemodulestringsrequiringparallelconnection.
Insertasuitablydimensionedprotectivediodeintooneofthetwoconnectionlinesleadingtothis
string,suchthattheselieintheconductancedirectioninthisstringduringtheconventional
generationofelectricalenergy;i.e.sothattheelectricalcurrentisabletopassthroughthem.Inorder
toattainthisitisnecessarytoconnectthediodeanodewiththepositive(+)connectionofthisstring
andthediodecathodewiththenegative(‐)connectionofthestring.
Onceworkonthefirstmodulestringiscomplete,repeatthisprocessforalloftheotherstrings
requiringparallelconnection.Thenestablishtherequisiteconnectionsfortheparallelinterconnection
ofthesestrings.Inplaceoftheadditionaldiodesitisalsopossibletoinstalldirectcurrentstringfuses.
Thesemustbeconfiguredaccordingtothemaximumquiescentcurrent(IR),whichisquotedinthe
datasheetspertainingtotherespectivemodules.Ifshadingofindividualmodulestringswithina
parallelcircuitisexpected,diodesarepreferable.
Theinstallationofadditionaldiodesorfusesisnecessarywiththeparallelconnectionofmodulestrings
becausetheinternalprotectionmeasuresadaptedtomoduleperformance(e.g.bypassdiodes)arenotableto
adequatelyregulatethecurrentflowinaparallelcircuitintheeventoftheshadingofindividualmodulestrings.
Afailuretoobservethismayresultinthecorrespondingsolarmodules(includingtheelectroniccomponents
containedwithinthem)beingdamaged.
WINAICOfundamentallyrecommendstheinstallationofstringfuses(DC!)withbothseriesandparalleltype
connections,inordertoprotectthesolarmodulesintheeventofamalfunction(e.g.aninverterdefect).The
fusesmustbeconfiguredaccordingtothemaximumquiescentcurrent(IR),whichisquotedinthedatasheets
pertainingtotherespectivemodules.

Safetyprecautions
ATTENTION:Pleaseensurethecorrectconnectionofthesocketsandsleeves
Thestrings(+and–cables)arefedintotheinverterandconnectedtotheDCsolarinputs.Themodulesocket
aremarked.Thecableonthe+socketofthemoduleshouldbeconnectedtotheinverteratthe
+input.Thesameprocedureappliestothe–socketand–input.Thecablescanbelaidincablegroovesinthe
crossprofiles.Hereitisimportanttomakesurethatnowaterremainsinthecablegrooves,e.g.iftheroofis
uneven.Ifnecessarydrainholescanbedrilledintothegroove.Onlycertifiedsocketconnectorsareapproved
forconnectingthesolarcablestothemodulesorinvertersrespectively.Thesocketconnectorsarecrimpedon
withspecialpliersorconnectedtothemodulesandinverterswithadaptercables.Theadaptersetsare
connectedtothe(approximately6mmstripped)endofthecable.Nowestablishthecrimpconnectionand
shrink‐fittheshrinktubingovertheconnectionwithahot‐airgunorflame.Theindividualstringscanbe
checkedforpolarityandvoltagewithamulti‐meter/voltmeter.Theinvertersshouldbeconnectedin
accordancewiththemanufacturer’sinstructions.
ATTENTION:Dependingonyieldandinverter,differentstringlengthsarepossible.Itisessentialtoobserve
theassemblyinstructionsandconnectionspecificationsfortheinverter!Priortoconnectingtotheinverter
checkthateachoftheindividualstringsisde‐energised.
Itisabsolutelyimperativethattheinverterbeconnectedtothepublicpowersupplynetworkbyacertified
specialist.
ATTENTION:Highdirectcurrentvoltageaccruesevenatlowlevelsofradiation.Nevertouchunprotected+
and–cablesthatareinoperation.
6.3Earthing
Properearthingonthemoduleframesistheresponsibilityofthesolarinstallerorinstallationcompany.Ifan
externallightningprotectionsystemisalreadyprovidedorplannedforthebuilding,thephotovoltaicsystem
mustbeintegratedintotheprotectionconceptagainstdirectlightingstrikes.Whenusingtransformer‐less
inverters,earthingshouldbecarriedoutforpersonalsafetyreasons.Theearthingpointismarkedonthe
moduleframe.Forearthingpurposes,anM4screwisprescribed.Alsoobservethenationalstandards.
7. Cleaning/maintenance
Astheoperator,youshouldregularlyremovedirtfromthemodules.
Thefollowingpointsshouldbenoted:
Neverstandonthemodulesurface.Donotexertanymechanicalloadsonthemodules.
Donotcleanwithwaterifthereisariskoffrostormajordifferencesintemperaturebetweenthe
module,waterandair.
Werecommenddecalcifyinghardwater.Thiswillpreventlastingwaterstains.Removestandingwater
fromthemodule.
Donotuseabrasivecleaningagentsortensides.Donotscrapeoffdirtasthismaydamagethesurface
ofthemodule.
