In t h e 1970's Woodcut To o l ' s founder Ken Port owned a n d operated a souveni r
business i n New Zealand, Ken would turn the wooden s o u v enirs he would sell.
Frustrated with the woodturning tools available to him, Ken d e s igned and
developed a p o r tfolio of woodturning pr o d ucts for his own use.

Woodcut Tool's founder Ke n Port wanted to make sharpening more simple,

recognised that ma n y t u rn e r s have variou s p h y si c a l constrai n t s and therefo r e
wanted to ma k e th e s ha r p e ni n g pr o c e ss s im p l e .
Core to t he Tru- G r i nd desi g n is the uniqu e abi l i ty to simply set the jig to a
number, with accurate repeatabi l i ty , the versati l i ty of a single jig to h o ld any
woodturning tool without th e need of an adaptor and th e compact design of
the system.

Slide and Sturdy Rest design prototypes with turners across the world to
ensure the new products were right , the new W ood c u t Tru-Grind Base S l i d e

wheel to be 15 0 to 160mm (6-6½ inches) fo r bo t h 15 0 mm (6 ") an d 20 0 mm (8 ")

Your Woodcut Tru-Grind Tool Holder is designed to enable woodturners to
repeatedly grind perfect bevels o n all types o f Bowl and S pi n d l e gouges,
Roughing gouges, Skews, and Scr a p e rs with a si n g le Tool Holder. The Tool
Holder is uniquely designed to lock into pl a ce , en s u ri n g you w i ll b e a bl e t o
repeat your p e r fe c t b e v e l e v er y t im e yo u r e- s h ar p e n t h e to o l

Under the cla m p block you w i l l find a shor t steel
rod. This rod is s u p p li e d to b e u s e d t o s u p po r t
you w h en setti n g using a long-flute d g ou g e or
other tool th at is slim or won’t align true in th e
Tool Holde r .

When setting up, fi x a stopper of hard wo o d or similar along the front edge of
the b a s e board or your b e nc h which is used t o set the t oo l protr u s i on . This
needs to be 5 0 m m ( 2 ”) b a ck f ro m t he e dge o f t h e b a s e b o a rd o r b e n ch .
This stopper will be c h i pp e d away with repeat e d use, so make it easy t o
replace. I t is impor t a n t that you repeat t h e same prot r u si o n each t i m e you set

1. Place your tool into the Tru - G ri n d Tool Holder, we recommend holding the
tool holder verticall y and init i a ll y onl y loo s e ly clam p i n g your tool in your Tool
Holder.
2. Adjust tool protrusion to 50mm (2") using your stopper as previously
described. F a st e n c l a mp .

The greater the angle that you adjust the Pi vo t Leg to the Tool Holder head
(or the g re a t er the number f or example pos i t i on 9), the g r e at e r th e Bevel
angle, i n c lu d i ng th e No se an d th e Si d es of the tool an d th e fu r th e r ba c k yo u
will grind the s i de s o f the gouge ( o r in c r ea s e the lengt h o f th e f in g e rn a i l ).
Position 9, w it h the Pivot Leg pu s h ed all the w a y forward, is used f o r
sharpening S c ra p e rs a nd R i ng T oo l s .

7. With th e Grinde r powere d off, apply the chisel to t h e Grinding Wheel and
turn the Grinding Wheel by hand . No w , rota t e the Tool Holder until the chisel
is ri gh t angles to th e Grinding Wheel, or t h e last section of th e ground face is
still in contact wit h the Whee l . Shift th e Base-slide in or out until that part of
the fac e of t h e chisel is in con t a c t with t h e Grinding W h e el so th a t the entire
length of the fa c e w il l b e groun d . S e cu r e the Bas e - sl i d e C a m L o ck l e ve r .
Check th e angle and adjust the Base Slide until you see parall e l lines in the
black marke r ac r o ss t he l en g t h o f t h e b e v el o f y o ur t oo l .
4. Mark t h e fa ce of your c h i s el with a bl a c k m ark e r . T hi s will assi s t you to
check the ac c u r ac y of y o ur s ha r p e ni n g se t up .
5. Loosen the Base-slide of the sharpening jig and mount the foot of the Tool
Holder into t h e B a s e S l ide P iv o t Po i n t.
6. A d ju s t the B as e Slid e in or out to a c h i ev e your requi r e d bevel angle,
especially a t th e n os e of y o ur c his e l .

9. Be gi n Sharpeni n g . Hold the Tr u - Gr i n d Tool Holder comfortably in y ou r
hands. Holding the Tru-Grind Tool Holder correctly is important. We
encourage you to wa t c h the 'How to sharpen wi th the Woodcut Tru-Grind'
video availa b l e o n Yo u T ub e .
Apply t he chisel t o the Gri n d in g Wheel a nd rotate i t from s i d e to side .
Continue to gr i n d until you have a sharp edge . With this pr o du c t you may
sharpen all of t h e gouge at one t i me or you may s h ar p e n the sides or th e nose
or whatever a r e a y o u n e e d t o .
When reshaping a badly ground gouge, work on the s id e s onl y , until they are
correct. The n bl e n d t h e no s e t o m at c h .
8. F o r each chisel write down, or record in s o me other way, the angle setting
of the Tool Ho l de r and extensi o n of the Base-slide. A handy suggestion is to
write the n u m be r s on t o y o u r w o od e n t o o l h a n dl e .

Lay it on th e w h e el and adjust the base slide
until the bevel angle is correct - we recommend
22 degrees. To m i nim i z e t h e risk of experien c i n g
a catch, we rec o m m en d s h ar p e n in g a slight
radius on the bevel of the Skew Ch i s e l. This
radius creates additional distance between the
project and t h e edge po i nt s . Rotate the T oo l
Holder to sh a r pen t he o t he r si d e .
Place your skew chisel into the Tru-Grind Tool Holder with the blade vertical
and the point at the bottom. Put the pivot leg into the re ar base pivot posi t i o n
and lay the body on its sid e . A d ju s t t h e Too l H o l de r l e g a n gl e u n t il t h e c u t ti n g
edge is hori z o nt a l wi t h t h e fa c e of t he w h ee l . W e r ec o m m en d po s i t io n #2.
