Bypurchasing,using,orresellingaXandemsystem,youacknowledgethatyouhavereadandunderstoodthe
followingwarningsandlimitationsandyouagreetothefollowingtermsandconditions.
Intellectual Property

Xandemistheownerofvariousintellectualpropertyandtechnologyrightsassociateditssystems,including
patent,copyright,tradesecret,andtrademarkrights.Exceptfortherightsexpresslygrantedherein,Xandemdoes
nottransfertoyouoranyotherenduseranyofXandem’stechnologyorotherintellectualpropertyortechnology
rights.Allright,title,andinterestinandtoXandem’stechnologyandintellectualpropertywillremainsolely
withXandem.Youagreethatyouwillnot,directlyorindirectly,reverseengineer,decompile,disassemble,or
otherwiseattempttoderivesourcecodeorothertradesecretsfromXandem’stechnology.
Limitations of Alarm Sensing Equipment
XandemTomographicMotionDetectionequipmentshouldbetestedperiodicallytoensureproperoperation.The
product,ifusedproperly,mayprovidealertofphysicalintrusionandsimilarenvironmentalchanges.However,
Xandemisnotaninsurer,andtheequipmentisnotasubstituteforinsurancenorisitaguaranteethatlossfrom
physicalintrusionwillbeprevented.Usersshouldprotectthemselvesfromriskoflosswithalladditional
availablemeans,includingproperinsurance.Xandemmakesnorepresentationthatthisproductcannotbe
compromisedorcircumvented,orthatitwillprovideanadequatesensing,orthatitwillpreventanyinjuries,
propertydamage,orotherlosses.Likeanyalarmproduct,itmaybebypassed,itissubjecttocompromise,andit
mayfailtowarnforavarietyofreasons,including,butnotlimitedto:improperinstallationorpositioning;
impropermaintenance;tampering;deadorimproperlyinstalledbatteries;sensinglimitations;component
failures;receivers;intrusionsoutsideoftheproduct’sdesignedrange,andavarietyofotherenvironmental
conditions.
Warranty
Xandemwarrantsthattheequipmentwill,for365daysafterdeliverytoyou,performinsubstantialconformance
withthisUserGuide.Yoursoleandexclusiveremedyforthebreachofthiswarrantyistoreturntheequipment,
atXandem’sexpense,toXandemandXandemwill,atitsoption,repairorreplacetheequipmentandreturnitto
you,atXandem’sexpense.If,inthesoleopinionofXandemtheforegoingremedyisnotfeasible,thenXandem
willcredityouforthepurchasepriceoftheaffectedequipment,lessitsdepreciatedvalue,calculatedusinga
straightlinemethodofdepreciationandbasedonausefullifeoffive(5)years.Priortoreturningequipmentfora
warrantyadjustment,youmustfirstcontactXandemforinstructionsandreceiveaReturnMaterialAuthorization
number(“RMA”).DocumentationaccompanyingyourreturnedequipmentmustincludetheRMA,original
invoicenumber,indicationofthequantityofreturnedproductsandadescriptionoftheallegeddefect.Products
returnedhereundermustbeshipped,transportationprepaid,atyourrisk,bythemosteconomicalmethodof
shipment.Shippingcostswillbecreditedonlyonequipmentthatwasnotinaworkingconditionpursuanttothis
warranty.Xandemwillnotpayforexcesstransportationcostsresultingfromtheuseofanythingotherthanthe
mosteconomicalcarrier.InternationalshipmentsreturnedthatXandemreturnstoyouafterrepairor

FCC Compliance
Thisdevicecomplieswithpart15oftheFCCRules.Operationissubjecttothefollowingtwoconditions:(1)
Thisdevicemaynotcauseharmfulinterference,and(2)thisdevicemustacceptanyinterferencereceived,
includinginterferencethatmaycauseundesiredoperation.Changesormodificationstothishardwarenot
expresslyapprovedbyXandemcouldvoidtheuser’sauthoritytooperatetheequipment.
ThisequipmenthasbeentestedandfoundtocomplywiththelimitsforaClassBdigitaldevice,pursuanttopart
15oftheFCCRules.Theselimitsaredesignedtoprovidereasonableprotectionagainstharmfulinterferenceina
residentialinstallation.Thisequipmentgenerates,usesandcanradiateradiofrequencyenergyand,ifnot
installedandusedinaccordancewiththeinstructions,maycauseharmfulinterferencetoradiocommunications.

INTRODUCTION
CongratulationsonpurchasingyourXandemTomographicMotionDetection(TMD)kit!Thisdocument
providesdetailedtechnicalinformationandwillguideyouthroughtheprocessofinstallingand
configuringyoursystem.
AXandemTMDsystemismadeupoftwokindsofdevices.Thenodesarethedevicesthatsurroundthe
areawheremotionistobesensed.Thesenodesarenotactuallysensorsbecauseeachonecannotsense
anythingbyitselftheyonlyworkintandemwithothernodes.Themorenodesyouhave,themorearea
youcancoverpersystem.
Theprocessingunit(PU)isthesecondkindofdevicewhichactsasagatewayforthemotiondetection
signal.Ithastwonormallyclosedcontactsformotionandtroubletriggeringthatcanbeusedtoeasily
integratetheTMDkitwithothersystems,asshowninFigure1.WhentheTMDsystemdetectsmotion
withintheareasurroundedbynodes,orwhenatroublewiththesystemisdetected,anormallyclosed
relayontheprocessingunitisopened.Thisisastandardwayinwhichmostsecurityandautomation
panelequipmentistriggered.

INSTALLATION
Follow the Do’s and Don’ts of Xandem TMD
DO:
●DotestusingaTMDdemokitbeforepermanentinstallation.TheTMDdemokitispowered
bybatteriesandenablesfasttestinginvariousenvironments.Testingwiththedemokitwillsave
youtimeandhelpyouavoidinstallationproblems.
●Doplaceallnodeswithinrangeofeachother.Detectionperformanceismaximizedwhenall
nodesarewithinwirelesstransmissiondistanceofeachother.
●DoplacethePUwithinrangeofallnodes.ThePUmustbeabletocommunicatewithallnodes
inthenetwork.Insomecases,thismayrequireplacingthePUneartheareabeingsensedbythe
nodesandrunningalongersignalwireorwirelessrepeaterfromthePUtothepanel.
●Doplacenodes0.51.0metersofftheground.Nodesshouldbeplacedatapproximatelytorso
levelofahumanbodysothatdetectionperformanceisoptimal.
●Domountnodessecurelyonsturdystructures.Ifanodefalls,shifts,ormoves,itmayleadtoa
falsetrigger.Makesuretosecurethenodesfirmlytosomethingthatwillnotmove.
●Doplacenodesontheinteriorofthedetectionareawalls.Whentheareatobesensedis
surroundedbywalls,installthenodesontheinteriorsideofthewallstomaximizedetectionand
minimizefalsetriggering.
●Dotestperimetersensitivity.Walkormovevehiclesaroundtheoutsideoftheareatomakesure
thethresholdisnotsetsolowthatmotionoutsidetheperimetercausesfalsetriggering.
●Dousebatterypacksduringconfigurationandtesting.Itisrecommendedtotestanareausing
portablebatterypowerbeforehardwiringaninstallation.Thiswillensurethatthedetectionis
successfulbeforecommittingtoawiredinstallation.
●Dosetsensitivitythresholdsashighaspossible.Toavoidfalsealarms,trysettingthethreshold
atahighvalueuponinstallation.Testthesystem,andifit’snotsensitiveenough,decreasethe
thresholduntilitis.It’sbettertoapproachtheoptimumthresholdfromhigherthresholds,and
workyourwaytolowervaluestoavoidfalsetriggering.
DON’T:
●Don’tinstallnodesonthegroundoragainstmetal.Thiswillseverelylimitsensing
performanceandcommunicationrangeofyourTMDsystem.Placenodesatleast.5metersfrom
thegroundanddonotmounttometalsurfaces.
●Don’tinstallthesensingsystemaroundtreesorfoliage.Movingbranchesandleavescancause
falsetriggeringiftheyarewithinornearthenetworkarea.Thisisespeciallytruewhentheareais
open(notenclosedbydensewallslikebrick,concrete,masonry).
●Don’tinstallnodestoohighfromtheground.Placingnodestoohighwillraisethesensing
planeandreducesensitivity.EXCEPTION:Ifdeployingthenodesinathreedimensional
configuration,thisrulecanbeignoredaslongaslinksfromnodetonodecrossthroughtheareato
besensed.
●Don’tplacenodesaroundornearabruptwaterflows.Appliancessuchasdishwashers,toilets,
icemakers,andwashingmachinesmaycausefalsetriggeringiftheyabruptlydrainorloadwater.
Largewaterpipeswithabruptstreamsmayalsocauseafalsetriggerunlesstheyaremadeofmetal

whichnaturallyblocksthesensingfromthemovingwater.
●Don’tinstallnodesonwindowsills.Placingthenodestooclosetowindowsmaycausethe
systemtobesensitivetomotionoutside.
●Don’tinstallthePUtoofarfromthenodes.ThePUhastoremaininalocationwhereitcan
communicatewithallofthenodesinthewirelessnetwork.
●Don’tmountnodestostructuresthatwillmove.Ifthenodesmove,falsetriggeringmayoccur.
Makesuretosecurethenodesfirmlytosomethingpermanentandsturdy.
●Don’texposenodestoprecipitation(rain,snow,hail).OutdoordeploymentsofTMDare
experimental.Precipitationmaycausefalsetriggeringifwaterdirectlyhitsnodeenclosures.Make
surethatallnodesareshelteredforanyoutdoordeployments.
●Don’tplacenodesorPUsnearmicrowaveovens.Microwaveovenscancauseinterferenceto
XandemTMDsystems.Makesurenodesremainatleast5metersfrommicrowaveovens.
●Don’tplacenodesdirectlybehindlargemetalobjects.Thiswillcausesomeoftheradiowaves
toreflectawayfromtheinteriorofthenetworkwhichdecreasesperformanceandcreatespossible
sensitivityoutsidethedetectionarea.
●Don’tmountnodesdirectlyonmetal.Metalcandistorttheantennapatternsonthenodesand
negativelyaffectdetectionperformance.Keeplargemetalplanesatleast1footaway.
Choose a TMD kit size
TMDissoldinkitsof6,10and15nodes.Thebestkitsizedependsonthesquarefootageoftheareayou
wanttocover,andthedensityoftheobstructionswithinthearea.Usethetablebelowasaguidelinefor
choosingakitsize.Thesesizesmayvarydependingontheenvironment.

Connect battery packs and power up nodes
Ithighlyrecommendedthatyouperformatest
usinga312VDCbatterybeforepermanent
wiring.Insertbatterypackwireleadsintothe
TMDdeviceconnectorsaspictured.
Becarefulnottoreversethepolarity(+/)
whenconnectingthewiresasthiswill
permanentlydamagethedevices.
Powerupallnodes.Afterallnodesareon,the
twogreenLEDsshouldbeillumnitated.Ifother
LEDsarelit,pleaseseethe“LEDStatus
Indicators”sectionofthisdocument.
Deploy the nodes around the detection area
Placethenodesuniformlyaroundthedetectionareaatapproximately0.51.0meterofftheground.
Chooselocationswhereyouplantomountthenodespermanently.Rememberthateachnodeisnot
actuallyasensor,theconnection“lines”goingfromnodetonodearewhatdothesensing.Themorelines
thatcrossagivenlocation,themoresensitivethedetectionis.
Donotplacenodesonornearthegroundorthesystemwillnotfunctionproperly.Makesurethedevices
arecompletelystationaryasmovementofthenodeswillcausefalsetriggering.
Test motion detection and adjust sensitivity as needed
1. Poweruptheprocessingunitandwaitfor20seconds.ThetwogreenLEDsshouldbeilluminated

ifitisreceivingcorrectlyfromallnodes.Afterwaitingthe20seconds,iftheorangeoryellow
LEDsarelit,anodemaynotbeturnedonorconfiguredcorrectly,ortheareamaybetoolargefor
thenumberofnodesyouareusing.Pleaserefertothe“LEDStatusIndicators”sectionformore
informationabouthowtointerprettheLEDs.
2. Trymovingaroundwithinthedetectionareatoverifythatmotionisproperlybeingsensed.The
redLEDonthePUturnsonwhenmotionisbeingdetected.Youmayneedtoadjustthesensitivity
tomaximizedetectionperformance(seeinstructionsonhowtochangethesensitivitybelow).
Aftermovementhasstopped,itmaytakeafewsecondsforthesystemtostopindicatingmotion.
Ifnodesaremoved,itwilltakelongerforthemotiondetectiontoturnoffaftermovementhas
stopped.
Ifdetectionperformanceispoorevenafteradjustingthesensitivitythreshold,theareamaybetoo
largeforthenumberofnodesyouaretesting.Tryusingalargerkit,orreducethetotaldetection
areabymovingnodesclosertogether.
3. Itisimportanttoalsotestmotionontheoutsideoftheperimeterforfalsetriggering.Whenthe
areaisenclosedbyheavywallslikebrick,masonry,orconcrete,outerperimetermotionwill
usuallynotbeaproblem.Inopenorthinwalledareaslikedrywallorthinwood,motioncloseto
theperimeterofthedetectionareamaycausefalsetriggering.Ifthisoccurs,reducesensitivityby
raisingthethresholdasexplainedbelow,movenodesfurtherinsidetheperimeter,orrestrict
accesstotheareajustoutsidetheperimeterbyafewmeters.
4. Donotdeploythesystemaroundorneartreesthatmayblowinthewind,astheymaycausefalse
triggering.Ifheavywallssurroundthedetectionarea,treesontheoutsideshouldnotbeaproblem
regardlessofwind.
Tocheckthecurrentsensitivitythresholdofthemotiondetection,dothefollowing:
1. ClickS1onthePUonetime.
2. ClickS2onthePUtwotimes.
3. CountthenumberoftimesthattheLEDsblinktodeterminethecurrentsettingforthemotion
sensitivitythreshold.
Toadjustthesensitivityofthemotiondetection,changethethresholdonthePUbydoingthe

following:
1. ClickS1onthePUonetime.
2. ClickS2onthePUonetimeOnlythegreenLEDontherightshouldbeilluminated.
3. ClickS1thenumberoftimesthatyouwanttosetthesensitivitythresholdtobeset.Oneclickis
mostsensitive(lowestthreshold),withmoreclicksmakingitincreasinglylesssensitive.
4. ClickS2tosavethenewsensitivitythreshold.
Install power supply and wiring (non-battery operated systems)
TheTMDnetworkcanbepoweredbyanyDCpowersupplyof312voltscapableofproviding50mAof
currenttoeachnode.Itisrecommendedtouseabatterybackupsystemonthepowersupplytoaccount
foroutages.Fordemonstrationorportabledeployments,batteriescanbedirectlywiredtothenodesand
PU.Thedevicescanbewiredinparallelwiththepowersupply,asshownintheillustrationbelow.
Install grommet and thread power wires to each node
Foreachnodelocation,chooseapunchouthole(bottomorback)ontheplasticenclosureandpunchit
outusingascrewdriverorotherpointedtool.Thebottompunchoutholeisconvenientforwiresthatrun
alongtheinsidewall,andthebacksidepunchoutisusefulwhenthewirecomesstraightoutofthewall.

Insertagrommetontheinteriorofthepunchouthole.Threadthewirethroughthegrommetandinsert
thepowerwireleadsintotheconnectoroneachnode.Becarefulnottoreversethepolarity(+/)ofthe
powerleadsasthiswillpermanentlydamagethedevices.
Placethenodeinthecradleoftheenclosure,placethecoveroverthenode,thenfinishtheenclosureby
placingandtighteningthethreeenclosurescrewsonthebackside.
Mount nodes to permanent and sturdy structures
Placeascrewintothestructurewherethenodewillbemounted,thenhooktheheadofthescrewintothe
keyholeonthebacksideoftheenclosure.Pulldowntolocktheenclosureintoplace.Makesurethatthe
enclosureisfirmlysecuredandwillnotshiftduringoperation.
Itisimportantthatthenodesaremountedonsturdystructuresasmovementofnodeswillcause
falsetriggering.
Connect Processing Unit (PU)
ThePUcommunicateswiththenetworkviawirelessconnectionsanddoesnotneedtobewiredtothe
nodes.Chooseapunchout,insertagrommet,andthreadthewiretothePUthroughtheenclosureasdone
previouslyforthenodes.ConnectpowertothePUusingtheleftmostconnector.Becarefulnotto
reversethepolarity(+/)ofthepowerleadsorplaceinwrongconnectorasthismaypermanently
damagethedevices.
Connecttherelaysasrequiredbyyourapplication:
●Motiondetectionrelay(A):ConnectionAonthePUisanormallyclosedrelaythatwillopen
whenmotionisdetected.Connectthisrelaytothepanelorotherequipmentasrequired.

●Troubledetectionrelay(B):ConnectionBonthePUisanormallyclosedrelaythatwillopen
whenatroubleisdetected.Thismaybethecaseifpowerislosttoanode,oriftheprocessingunit
failstoconsistentlyreceivedatareadingsfromthenodes.
Perform final walk test
Verifythatthesystemisfunctionalbywalkingthedetectionareaandverifyingthatthepanelorother
integrationequipmentisreactingproperly.Doublecheckmotionaroundtheouterperimetertoensurethat
falsetriggeringwillnotbeanissue.Adjustsensitivitythresholdsasnecessary.
CONFIGURATION
●Settingaparameter:Aconfigurationparameterisselected(seeTable2)byclickingS1acertain

Thenetworkcouldbestretchedouttoofar,experiencingheavyinterference,orthenodeitself
couldbeinabadposition(i.e.,behindametalobject).Trymovinganypoorhealthnodestonew
positionsorclosertotherestofthenodes.
●Nodeoutageisindicatedwhenanodehascompletelydisconnectedfromthenetwork.Thiscanbe
causedbyapowerlossoranodethatisonadifferentchannel,PAN,orchannelshiftthantherest
ofthenodes.Whenanodeisout,allothernodeswillblinktoindicatewhichnodeismissing.For
example,ifnode3isout,allothernodeswillrepeatthepattern:blink3timesrestblink3times
