PERFORMANCE
This new four stroke is a true outboard; engineered, designed, and developed specifically
for the marine environment. It’s three-cylinder, single overhead camshaft design means
powerful performance in a compact package, and that performance is available in both
propeller and jet-driven models to effectively power a myriad of applications and
designs. With a newly-designed single throttle valve, a long intake track manifold,
and an Electronic Control Module these engines feature easy starting, fast
acceleration, and excellent top-end speed while still delivering the
outstanding fuel-efficiency Yamaha outboards are known for.
RELIABILITY
Yamaha’s proven 40hp four-stroke outboard design now comes with the
addition of electronic multi-point fuel injection for easy, turn-key starting.
A large, on-engine water-separating fuel filter further adds to its long-term
reliability approach, as does an integral engine monitoring and warning
system and Yamaha’s renowned Ultimate Corrosion Protection System.
These features help provide the peace of mind that comes standard with
every Yamaha outboard.
CONVENIENCE AND CONTROL
Yamaha’s F40A has met the digital age. Optional Command Link®gauges
can now be rigged to this versatile engine. Even Yamaha’s exclusive Variable
Trolling RPM Switch (VTS™) is standard on Command Link or Multifunction
Tiller Handle-equipped models. The benefit? Ultimate convenience, expansive
available information, great control; all in a compact, easy-to-own-and-operate
package.
VALUE
Enhanced reliability. Exceptionally smooth and quiet operation. Outstanding
fuel efficiency. Maximum performance and convenience. All combine to make
the new Yamaha F40A an incredibly powerful and versatile value, both now
and in the years ahead.

F40A FEATURES

POWWERFUL PERFORMANCE
Yamaha’s new F40A features a vapor-reducing fuel return
system. Used in conjunction with Yamaha’s electronic
multi-point fuel injection, the F40A offers dependable
turn-key starting in both hot and cold conditions.
A single overhead camshaft provides precise valve timing
for maximum power with minimum weight. This 6-valve,
SOHC design efficiently exchanges intake and exhaust
gases for responsive power and fuel efficiency.
Responsive Power
Precise Throttle Control
Fuel Efficiency
Three individual compact electronic fuel injectors deliver the
exact amount of fuel needed for optimum performance and
economy. Controlled by the Engine Control Module via input
from an array of on-engine sensors, their location just above
the intake valves enhances fuel atomization, resulting in
more efficient combustion.
Dependable Starting
All air entering the engine block of the F40A is routed through
a single throttle valve, to ensure the precise amount of air
necessary for optimum power and fuel efficiency. The air
silencer box reduces intake noise and air turbulence for
smooth, quiet operation.

RUGGED RELIABILITY
Long Term Value
Advanced Technology
Cleaner Fuel
Protection from the Elements
Yamaha improved their legendary Ultimate Corrosion
Protection System for the F40A. Yamaha’s proprietary
alloys, ACP-221 paint process, and freshwater flush device
are just the start. Multiple sacrificial anodes in and on
the power head, mid-section, and lower unit, a special
ACP-221 paint process, and a specially-painted and treated
exhaust system means better long-term protection and
maximum value.
All F40A models are equipped with an Engine Control
Module that interfaces with Yamaha Diagnostic System
software. This provides a view of selected past and current
running conditions, to help technicians provide a complete
and accurate diagnosis.
All F40A outboards feature a large, on-engine water
separating fuel filter with a water sensor. Used in
conjunction with Yamaha’s optional boat-mounted
10-Micron Water Separating Fuel Filter, it helps separate
water and contaminants from the fuel before they can
reach the outboard’s other filters and fuel injectors.
The F40A features a proven one-piece cowling with an intake
air drain system, to easily and efficiently drain away any water
that enters the cowling during normal engine operation.
Incoming air is routed through a labyrinth of passages that
help trap and drain water before it enters the engine’s intake,
for maximum reliability.

CONVENIENCE AND CONTROL
Yamaha’s award-winning Multifunction Tiller Handle
offers the benefits demanded most in a tiller control.
From its front-mounted gear shift and ignition key
switch controls, to the easy-to-use Variable Trolling
RPM Switch, it’s ergonomically-designed to provide
maximum control with maximum comfort.
Precise Trolling Control
Optional Tiller Handle Control
Smooth and Quiet
More Information
Optional Command Link gauges offer a wealth of information
to the operator in order to help provide efficient and effective
operation. Available in square or round style to fit a wide
range of tastes and applications.
By just pressing a button on the Command Link®tachometer
or the VTS™ switch on the Multifunction Tiller Handle,
the operator can adjust the engine’s trolling speed from
650 ~ 900 rpm in 50-rpm increments. This helps provide
precise and consistent trolling speeds in wide array
of conditions.
Engine exhaust is routed through a maze before exiting
above the waterline through the idle exhaust relief outlet
for unbelieveably smooth and quiet operation.
