GENERAL INFORMATION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The RecipPak Air-Cooled Condensing Unit will be com-
pletely assembled with all interconnecting refrigerant
piping and internal wiring, ready for field installations
that require DX central station air handling. They are
designed for outdoor (roof or ground level) installation.
The unit will be pressure-tested, evacuated and given
a holding charge of Refrigerant-22. An initial oil charge
will also be included. There will be an optional test to
check that each control device operates correctly.
CODE STATUS
The units are designed in accordance with UL (200,
230,460-3-60), N.E.C.,ASHRAE/ANSI STANDARD 15,
and ASME Codes ARI 590.

DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY
may result if personnel fail to observe safety precautions.
Work on electronic equipment should not be undertaken unless the individual(s) have been trained in the
proper maintenance of equipment and is (are) familiar with its potential hazards.
Shut off power supply to equipment before beginning work and follow lockout procedures.When working
inside equipment with power off, take special care to discharge every capacitor likely to hold dangerous
potential.
Be careful not to contact high voltage connections when installing or operating this equipment.

Voltages as low as 50 volts may cause death.

Failure to heed recommended clearances may result in reduced
systemperformance, nuisanceshutdowns,and servicingproblems.

air flow to the unit. In installations where winter operation is in-
tendedandsnowaccumulationsareexpected,additionalunitheight
must be provided to insure full air flow.

INSTALLATION CHECK LIST
The following items, 1 thru 5, must be checked before
placing units into operation.
1. Inspect unit for shipping damage.
2. Rig unit per Fig. 3. Remove unpainted shipping
braces.
3. Open unit only after piping is installed and evacu-
ation is complete.
4. Pipe unitusing goodpipingpractice (seeASHRAE
handbook).
5. Check to see that unit is installed and operated
within OPERATIONAL LIMITATIONS shown on
page 7.
The following pages outline procedures to be followed.
HANDLING
Theseunitsare shipped as completelyassembledunits
containing full operating charge, and care should be
taken to avoid damage due to rough handling.
The units are shipped without export crating unless it
is specified by Sales Order.
A unit should be lifted by spreader bars and inserting
hooks through the holes provided in the top of the unit
frame. (See Fig. 3). FIG. 3 – RIGGING THE CHILLER
INSTALLATION
WARNING
To protect warranty, this equipment must be installed and serviced by an authorized YORK
service mechanic or a qualified service person experienced in chiller installation. Installa-
tion must comply with all applicable codes, particularly in regard to electrical wiring and
other safety elements such as relief valves, HP cutout settings, design working pressures
and ventilation requirements consistent with the amount and type of refrigerant charge.
Lethal voltages exist within the Control Panel. Before servicing, open and tag all disconnect
switches.

INSPECTION
Immediately upon receiving the unit, it should be in-
spected for possible damage which may have occurred
during transit. If damage is evident, it should be noted
on the carrier’s freight bill. A written request for inspec-
tion by the carrier’s agent should be made at once. See
Instruction 50.15-NM for more information and details.
LOCATION AND CLEARANCES
These units are designed for outdoor installations on
ground level, rooftop, or beside a building.The location
should be selected for minimum sun exposure and to
insurean adequate supplyof fresh airforthe condenser.
The units must be installed with sufficient clearances
for air entrance to the condenser coil, for air discharge
away from the condenser, and for servicing access.
In installations where winter operation is intended and
snow accumulations are expected, additional height
must be provided to insure normal condenser air flow.
(See DIMENSIONS).
AVOID locations where normal operating sound may
beobjectionablesuch as near occupied areas,beneath
windows, or between structures.
FOUNDATION
The unit should be mounted on a flat and level founda-
tion, floor or rooftop, capable of supporting the entire
operatingweightofthe equipment.SeePHYSICALDATA
for operating weight. If the unit is elevated beyond the
normal reach of service personnel, a suitable catwalk
must be constructed around the unit.The catwalk must
becapable ofsupportingservicepersonnel, their equip-
ment, and the reciprocating compressors.
Ground Level Locations
It is important that the units be installed on a substan-
tial base that will not settle. A one piece concrete slab
with footers extended below the frost line is highly rec-
ommended. Additionally, the slab should not be tied to
the main building foundations as noise and vibration
may be transmitted.
Mounting holes are provided in the steel channel for
bolting the unit to its foundation. (See DIMENSIONS).
Mounting holes (11/16" dia.) are provided in the steel
channel for bolting the unit to its foundation. See DI-
MENSIONS for location of the mounting holes.
For ground level installations, precautions should be
taken to protect the unit from tampering by or injury to
unauthorized persons. Tamperproof options, such as
wire-mesh guards and louvered panels, are available
to enclose the unit. Erecting a fence around the unit is
another common practice. Check local authorities for
safety regulations.
Rooftop Locations
Choosea spotwith adequatestructuralstrengthtosafely
support the entire weight of the unit and service per-
sonnel. Care must be taken not to damage the roof
during installation. If the roof is “bonded”, consult the
building contractor or architect for special installation
requirements.Roof installations should incorporate the
use of spring type isolators to minimize the transmis-
sion of vibration into the building structure.
SHIPPING BRACES
Twoshipping brackets(typically galvanized steel)which
run diagonally along each side of the unit, must be
removed once the unit is mounted on its foundation. A
third bracket on the right rear of the unit should also be
removed. This bracket runs across the bottom right
corner of the unit behind the compressors.
SPRING ISOLATORS (OPTIONAL)
1. Identify isolator and locate at proper mounting
point using Table 1, on page 14.
2. Block up equipment so as to install spring mounts
with pin on top of housing into Equipment Mount-
ing Holes.
3. Mounting Adjust Nut is inside the isolator mount
located just below the top plate of the mount.Turn
nut 2 turns clockwise (down) to load spring mount
at each location.
4. Take two additional turns on Adjustment Nut of
each location.
5. Repeat step No. 3 as many times as necessary
to bring height of isolator to proper height.
6. Take additional turns on mounts at low side or
corner to level the equipment.

COMPRESSOR MOUNTING
The compressors are mounted on four (4) isolator pads
(one under each compressor foot). (See Fig. 4). The
mounting bolts are not to be loosened or adjusted at
installation.
REFRIGERANT PIPING
General – When the unit has been located in its final
position, the unit piping may be connected. Normal in-
stallation precautions should be observed in order to
receive maximum operating efficiencies. System pip-
ing should conform to ASHRAE guidelines. All piping
design and installation to assure proper system opera-
tion is the responsibility of the user. Piping should be
kept free of all foriegn matter.
Since elbows, tees and valves decrease pump capac-
ity, all piping should be kept as simple as possible.

Hand-operated stop valves should be installed in all
lines to facilitate servicing.
YORK ASSUMES NOWARRANTY RESPONSIBILITY
FOR SYSTEM OPERATION OR FAILURES DUE TO
IMPROPER PIPING OR PIPING DESIGN.
Filter driers are shipped loose for field installation on
each refrigerant circuit (Fig. 5). Field refrigerant piping
can be connected to the condensing unit without loss
of the holding charge in the unit.
All expansion valves, sight glasses, liquid line sole-
noid valves, refrigerant field piping supplied and in-
stalled by others (Fig. 5).
A small holding charge of R-22 will be present in the
chiller package.
THE SYSTEM MUST BE “EVACUATED” BEFORE
CHARGING. When placing the system in operation,
proper charge should be verified by checking system
subcooling. See page 63.
PIPING SIZE AND ORIENTATION
When sizing refrigerant pipe for split system air condi-
tioning, consideration must be given to the:
(1) Suction line pressure drop due to friction
(2) Liquid line pressure drop due to friction
(3) Suction line velocity for oil return
(4) Liquid line pressure drop due to vertical rise
Refer toTable 2 (Recommended refrigerant line sizing)
for the friction losses for both the suction and liquid
lines for the condensing unit.
On a system where the evaporator blower is located
below the condensing unit, the suction line must be
sized for both pressure drop and oil return.
When the condensing unit located below the evapora-
tor blower, the liquid line must be designed for pres-
sure drop due to friction loss and vertical rise and fric-
tion loss exceeds 40 PSI, some refrigerant will flash
before it reaches the thermal expansion valve.
All horizontal suction lines should be pitched at least
1/4 inch per foot in the direction of the refrigerant flow
to aid the return of oil to the compressor. All suction
lines with a vertical rise exceeding 3 feet should have
a “P” trap at the bottom and the top to facilitate oil
return. Suction lines with a vertical rise exceeding 25
feet should be trapped every 15 feet to provide drain
points for the oil when the circuit is de-activated.When
the circuit is re-activated, oil will return to the com-
pressor more quickly and in smaller slugs.

1-3/8" for the optional factory mounted hot gas bypass valves (one per circuit).

COMPRESSOR INSULATION
In high humidity environments, compressor sweating
may be noted. In most applications, this is of no con-
cern. However, if it is undesirable, it is the responsibil-
ity of the installer to make provisions to field insulate
the compressor or install a factory insulation kit when
they become available. Contact YORK Factory Mar-
keting for availability.
ELECTRICAL WIRING
Chillers are shipped with all factory mounted controls
wired for operation.
Field Wiring – Power wiring must be provided through
a fused disconnect switch to the unit terminals (or op-
tional molded case disconnect switch) in accordance
with N.E.C. or local code requirements. Minimum cir-
cuit ampacity and maximum dual element fuse size
are given on page 10. A 115-1-60/50, 20 amp source
must be supplied for the control panel through a fused
disconnect when a control panel transformer (optional)
is not provided.Refer toWiring Diagram, Form 195.26-
W2.
Affiliated apparatus, such as a chilled water flow switch,
auxiliary contacts from the chilled water pump starter,
alarms,etc.,should be interlockedintothe control panel
circuit.Thesefieldmodifications maybemade as shown
on the WIRING DIAGRAM.
FIELD CONTROL WIRING
Affiliated components, such as liquid line solenoid
valves, zone thermostat, start/stop, auxillary cycling
contacts, alarms, and emergency stop, should be in-
terlocked into the control panel circuit. These devices
should be connected as noted below. Also see WIR-
ING DIAGRAMS.
Liquid Line SolenoidValve Connection
Z Compressors
Connect SYS 1 to terminals 23 and 2 in Compressor
#1 Motor Terminal Box and SYS 2 to terminals 23 and
2 in Compressor #2 Motor Terminal Box. The control
panel will supply a 115 VAC signal to operate each
solenoid. An RC SUPPRESSOR is connected across
terminals 23 and 2 in each Motor Terminal Box. THE
RCSUPPRESSOR MUST NEVERBEREMOVED.See
Fig. 7 for terminal locations.
Liquid Line SolenoidValve Connection
J Compressors
Connect SYS 1 to terminals SP1 and 2 in Compressor
#1 MotorTerminal Box and SYS 2 to terminals SP1 and
2 in Compressor #2 Motor Terminal Box. The control
panelwillsupply a 115VACsignalto operateeachsole-
noid.AnRC SUPPRESSOR isconnectedacrosstermi-
nals23 and2in eachMotorTerminalBox.THERCSUP-
PRESSOR MUST NEVER BE REMOVED. See Fig. 7
for terminal locations.
Zone Thermostat Start/Stop
Connect SYS 1 to terminals 13 and 14 of TB3 (Fig.12).
Connect SYS 2 to terminals 13 and 15 of TB3 (Fig.12).
User supplied contacts must be dry contacts which
close to run. See Note 4 of the Wiring Diagram for
wiring requirements.
Auxillary Cycling Contacts
Connect SYS 1 in series with SYS 1 Zone Thermostat
on terminals 13 and 14 of TB3 (Fig. 12). Connect SYS
2 in series with SYS 2 Zone Thermostat on terminals
13 and 14 of TB3 (Fig. 12). User supplied contacts
must be dry contacts which close to run. See Notes 3
and4 of theWIRING DIAGRAMforwiring requirements.
CAUTION: The fan(s) in the Air Handler MUST be in-
terlockedintotheAuxiliaryCyclingContacts.
Failure to do so may cause damage to the
chiller.Do not operate a system unless the
fansarerunning.
Emergency Stop
Connect between terminals 5 and 1 of TB1 (Fig. 10)
terminal block. Must be N.C. dry contact supplied by
user. Jumper if not used. See Note 5 of WIRING DIA-
GRAM.
Alarm Contacts
A single set of contacts are available on terminals 23
and 24 of TB1 (Fig. 10). These contacts will transition
anytime a fault lockout occurs on either system. Con-
tacts are N.C. under no-fault conditions. Any inductive
loadsconnected to thesecontactsmust be suppressed.
MULTIPLE UNITS
For increased compressor protection and to reduce
power inrush at start-up on multiple chiller installa-
tions,provisionsmust bemadetopreventsimultaneous
start-up of two or more units. Also, some method must
be employed to automatically cycle one or more of the
units on or off to permit more efficient operation at part
load conditions.

stalled, a jumper must be connected between terminals 5 and 1. De-
vice must have a minimum contact rating of 100VA at 115 volts A.C.
6. Contacts are rated at 115V, 100VA, resistive load only, and must be
suppressed at load by user.

8. Contactors 1M & 3M are supplied only on part winding start units.
Compressor terminals 1, 2, 3 are connected to terminals 7, 8, 9 in
compressor terminal box on across-the-line start units and wires 100
thru 102 & 200 thru 202 are not supplied.
