CHAPTER 2. DAZZLE SUMP CONTROLLER UNIT
The Dazzle sump level controller is a programmable system that continuously maintains sump levels
at optimal eld-dened set points (within centimeters) preventing overows and putting an end to
bucket brigades. It is available in sizes to t all sumps.
Operating Specications
• Power: 100 - 240 Vac (50-60Hz) universal transformer
• Audible alarm: 100 dB
• LEDs: 10 (red, yellow, green)
• Sensor: Power 24 VDC
• Solenoid: Power 24 VDC

CAUTION: Holding the programming button for 30 seconds or longer will wipe all existing
information from the system. New high and low level set points will have to be reprogrammed.

Mounting the Level Sensor and Solenoid Valve
Mount the Sump Controller unit so that the programming button (shown in Figure 1) is located at the
bottom of the unit and the unit is level. Screws or bolts can be used to secure the enclosure through
the mounting holes on the top and bottom anges.
Mount the Sump Level sensor (item #2 in Figure 2) so the relief holes (Figure 3) are above the sump
uid level. Secure the placement to prevent the sensor’s position from changing. Changing the loca-
tion of the sensor after the Sump Controller unit is programmed can result in sump ooding or low
sump uid levels. The level sensor must be mounted in the sump at least 1 inch from the bottom of
the sump. It should always rest in uids.
The solenoid valve (item #4 in Figure 2) is a normally closed valve. When the sump requires lling,
the Sump controller energizes the solenoid coil and opens the valve. Place the solenoid valve in the
plumbed ll line near the sump.

Checking the Sump Level Sensor
To verify that the Sump Level sensor (item #2 in Figure 2) is working properly, plug the power cord
(item #6 in Figure 2) into a power outlet. The LEDs will let you know if the sensor is working properly.
LEDs when the Sensor is Working Correctly
When the LEDs ash alternately between yellow and red, the sensor is working properly, which means
that the Sump Level sensor is attached and the Sump Controller unit is ready to be programmed.

needs to be programmed.
LEDs when the Sensor is Not Working Correctly
LEDs ashing RED indicate that the Sump Level sensor is NOT attached. Check the sensor’s
wiring (see the section titled “Sump Level Sensor Wiring”).

Sump Level Sensor Wiring
When the LEDs on the Sump Controller unit ash red, check the Sump Level sensor’s wiring by
performing the following steps and referring to Figure 6.
1. Remove the cover from the Sump Level sensor.
2. Loosen the wire gland from the Sump Level Sensor cable (item #3 in Figure 2).
3. Wire to match the drawing in Figure 6. Be certain to match Yellow/Green to the negative
connection and Black to the positive connection — polarity is critical to the functioning of the
level sensor.
4. Hand tighten the wire gland on the Sump Level Sensor cable. Ensure adequate slack to
eliminate strain on the wire terminals.
5. Replace the cover and tighten securely to assure that it is a liquid tight seal.

Sump Levels
Setup the Sump Controller unit so it can identify two sump levels: High level and Low level. They are
described below.
• High level
Level of uid in the sump when all machines and attachments that can impact the sump level are
TURNED OFF. This is the highest level that uids can reach in the sump. (Examples of machines and
attachments include: high pressure attachments, chillers, etc.)
• Low level
Level of uid in the sump when all machines and attachments that can impact the sump level are
TURNED ON and operating at maximum capacity. This is the lowest level that uids can reach with
machines and attachments operating.
Once these two levels are set, the Sump Controller unit, in conjunction with the Sump Level sensor,
automatically monitor and adjust sump levels. When the sump level falls below the Low level, the
controller detects a ll condition and cycles the solenoid valve on a 30 second cycle (12 seconds
open, 18 seconds closed) until the sump uid returns to the Low level. The LEDs indicate the ll
condition.
The steps to setup the High level and Low level are in the “Programming the Sump Controller Unit”
section.

• Sump is two inches below Low level in a low-alert
condition. Solenoid is OPEN and sump is being lled.

• Sump is two inches above High level and in emergency
alert condition. Solenoid is CLOSED. Red LEDs ashing.

LEDs Dened
While the Sump Controller unit is running, you might see the colors of the LEDs change. The list
below denes the colors and the LED patterns.
GREEN The sump controller is at Low level
YELLOW Sump is below Low level
- Solid yellow Solenoid closed
- Flashing yellow Solenoid open (sump is being lled)
RED Warning of errors — both low- and high-level alerts

Programming the Sump Controller Unit
Perform the following steps to set the Sump Controller unit to Operating mode.
1. Press and hold the programming button until the unit beeps once. Release the button. The lower 8
LEDs are yellow. This LED pattern is the Set High Level pattern.
2. Place the level of the sump to its maximum level (high level) or immerse sensor in sump to the
desired high uid level. Press and hold the programing button until the unit beeps twice. Release
the button. The LEDs are now in the Set Low Level pattern.
3. Place the level of the sump to its minimum level (low level) with all machines and attachments
operating, or immerse sensor in sump to the desired low uid level. Press and hold the programing
button until the unit beeps twice. Release the button. While the unit is beeping, the LEDs briey go
into the Controller Congured pattern. They then settle into the Operating Mode pattern. The Sump
Controller unit is ready to be used.

NOTE: If the Sump Controller unit is programmed incorrectly, the LEDs ash red. Return to Step 1.
Alarms
If an alarm sounds during normal operation, the Sump Controller unit requires immediate attention.
If the sump level becomes too high or low, the following occurs:
• If the level of the sump becomes too high, the top 6 LEDs ash red, then the top 8 LEDs ash
yellow, and back again. Also, the alarm sounds.
• If the level of the sump becomes too low, the bottom 8 LEDS ash yellow, then the bottom 6 LEDs
ash red, and back again. Also, the alarm sounds.
