Particular attention must be paid to the following warnings:
DANGER
Risk of electric shock
−The power plug is equipped with an protective earth conductor, therefore, it has to be
used with an appropriately equipped socket.
−The protective capacity must not be rendered ineffective by the use of extension cables
with no earth conductor.
−In case of error there is a risk of contact with life-threatening mains voltage.
DANGER
Risk of damage to the device from penetrating moisture
−
Devices with a mains connection and their accessories (particularly external table power
pack) must not come into contact with moisture or liquids.
−If the housing of devices or accessories that conduct mains voltage (e.g. table power pack)
is damaged, these must be permanently taken out of service and disconnected from the
mains.
−Non-compliance in both cases results in exposure to life-threatening mains voltage.
WARNING
Risk of electric shock
−Always switch off the device and pull out the power plug before cleaning or opening the
device.
−Disconnect the power plug before changing device fuses. Failure to do so may result in
contact with life-threatening mains voltage.
CAUTION
Risk of electric shock, overheating of the power cable, in worst case, fire
Where there are detachable power cables, please note the following:
−Detachable power supply cables must not be replaced with power supply cables that do
not meet the specifications.
−Use only the specified power cables to avoid these becoming severely overheated.

CAUTION
Risk of ineffective safety measures
−
If it is determined that protective measures are no longer effective, the device must be
taken out of service and secured against inadvertent operation, to avoid the risk of injury.
−Contact ZEISS Service to have the device repaired.
CAUTION
Risk of fire from heat accumulation
−Always check the device is switched off before covering it with a dust cover.
−Clogging or covering of ventilation slats is also prohibited.
−Failure to comply with these two instructions can lead to an accumulation of heat, which
can damage the device and, in the worst-case scenario, cause a fire.
CAUTION
Risk of damage to the device due to incorrect or improvised fuses
−When changing the device fuses, only fuses specified in the technical data may be used.
−The use of other fuses and short-circuiting the fuse box are prohibited, to avoid the risk of
overheating, smoke formation or fire in the device.
NOTICE
Environmental damage due to improper disposal
−Do not dispose of defective equipment in regular domestic waste. It should be disposed of
in accordance with the prevailing national legal requirements. The
manufacturer of the
device is under the legal obligation to take defective devices back.
−
Sample waste should be disposed of in accordance with the prevailing national legal
requirements.

4NOTES ON WARRANTY
The manufacturer guarantees that the instrument is free of material or manufacturing defects upon
delivery. Any defects must be reported immediately and steps taken to minimize damage. If such a defect
is reported, the instrument manufacturer shall be obliged to correct the fault, either by repairing the
instrument or replacing it with a new one, at the manufacturer's discretion. No warranty is given for
defects caused by natural wear and tear (particularly of wearing parts) and improper use of the
instrument.
The instrument manufacturer shall not be liable for damage caused by misuse, negligence or any other
tampering with the instrument, particularly the removal or replacement of instrument components, or
the use of accessories from other manufacturers. Such actions shall invalidate any warranty claims.
With the exception of the work described in this quick reference guide, no maintenance or repair work is
to be carried out on the SYCOP 3. Repairs may only be performed by ZEISS Service or individuals specially
authorized by ZEISS Service. In the event of a problem with the instrument, please contact your local
ZEISS representative.
5INTENDED USE
With the SYCOP 3 system control panel and the EMS 3 controller required for it, the following stereo and
zoom microscopes can be operated:
−SteREO Discovery.V12/V20,
−SteREO Lumar.V12,
−Axio Zoom.V16.
The correct operation of the above microscope systems is essential for their safe and successful
functioning. Before setting up, putting into operation and utilizing the SYCOP 3, be sure, therefore, to
carefully read this Operating Manual and the relevant operating manuals for the microscopes connected
and for other components and accessories that may be used with them and to make yourself thoroughly
familiar with their contents.
Keep the operating manuals in a place where all the users can, at any time, access the information
required for the use of the microscope system.
CAN components connected to the system are controlled and monitored via joystick, scroll wheels,
pushbuttons, (optional) footswitches and touchscreens.

8INSTALLATION CONDITIONS
The installation conditions for SYCOP3 correspond to those of the microscopes assigned to them:
SteREO Discovery.V12/V20, SteREO Lumar.V12, Axio Zoom.V16.
The ambient conditions (humidity, temperature, pressure) specified in Section 7 should be adhered to.
When documenting fluorescence preparations, do not expose the microscope to direct sunlight. This
helps minimize the influence of stray light.
For prolonged experimental procedures using the microscope (e.g. involving incubation or long image-
recording procedures) choose an installation location with minimum vibration.
Vibration stemming e.g. from forced ventilation, floor impact noise or other shocks can have an impact
on the supplementary modules of the microscope, some of which react sensitively. It can also lead to
reduced image quality and experimental errors.
To reduce vibrations at the microscope installation location, ZEISS offers various passive and active
damping options (Axio Imager (000000-0477-190 anti-vibration plate); small, air-damped system table
(000000-1984-812), table top mat TS 150).
Select an installation site which is as temperature-stable as possible for long-term observations.
For reliable long-term observations, the device must first warm up. The temperature equilibrium is
attained within 2-3 hours, depending on the light source, electronics and room temperature control. This
time must be planned into critical studies.
Space requirements
The distance of the system to the wall should be at least 15 cm, in order to ensure sufficient air
circulation and accessibility of the cabling..

The SYCOP 3 system control panel combines four
controls in one unit:
−Joystick (Fig. 2/1) permitting the two principal
functions of the microscope to be controlled in
a combined way: zooming and focusing
−Scroll wheels (Fig. 2/2) facilitating the fine
focusing of the microscope image in greater
magnifications
−Pushbuttons (Fig. 2/3) arranged in six pairs to
allow additionally selectable microscope
functions to be individually controlled
−Touchscreen (Fig. 2/4) allowing specific
microscope functions to be controlled and the
overall system to be monitored
The SYCOP 3 has been designed for one-hand
operation of the microscope. This allows the
operator to use all the principal functions without
having to interrupt viewing through the eyepieces.
The SYCOP 3 can be placed to the right or left of
the microscope, independent of the location.
The EMS 3 controller is required for the SYCOP 3.

Check that the microscope system has been
correctly set up and connected.
All transport locks are properly removed.
Switch on all the light sources and illuminators
existing in the system. In so doing, follow the
separate operating instructions of each device.
Now, all components can be switched on
according to the operating manual of the main
device.
•Before switching the device on, check that the
joystick on the SYCOP 3 is in zero position and
that the footswitch, if any, is freely accessible.
•Set the Power switch at the back of the EMS 3
controller to position I. If necessary, briefly press
the button (standby) on the front of the EMS
3 controller.
The system will be switched on and will initialize
(Fig. 3).
If a motorized stage is connected, a stage
initialization query will appear (Fig. 4).
−If the button is pressed, initialization
will be performed immediately.
−If the button is pressed, initialization
will be stopped and may be carried out later.
When the initialization is completed, the Home
home page (Fig. 5) will appear.
The system is ready for subsequent configuration.

11.1 Joystick
In the default setting, the joystick (Fig. 2/1) is used to control the two principal functions of the
microscope (zooming and focusing).
Slight, careful deflection of the joystick results in fine zooming and focusing movements, while full
deflection produces faster zooming and focusing movements.
−Tilt the joystick left. Zooming Reduce zoom magnification.
−Tilt the joystick right. Zooming Increase zoom magnification.
−Tilt the joystick forward. Focusing Move the motorized focusing unit upward.
−Tilt the joystick backward. Focusing Move the motorized focusing unit downward.
Whenever one of the two motorized mechanical or measuring stages intended to be used is connected
to the system, the stage may additionally be moved in X or Y direction by the joystick. If you wish to
switch from microscope control (zooming and focusing) to stage control and back, briefly press the
joystick.
Slight, careful deflection of the joystick will result in fine stage movements, while full deflection will
produce faster stage movements.
−Tilt the joystick left. −Stage moves in –X direction.
−Tilt the joystick right. −Stage moves in +X direction.
−Tilt the joystick forward. −Stage moves in +Y direction.
−Tilt the joystick backward. −Stage moves in –Y direction.
11.2 Scroll Wheels
In the default setting, the two scroll wheels (Fig. 2/2) are used for fine focusing.
−Turn the left or right scroll wheel
forward.
Fine focusing Moves the motorized focusing unit upward.
−Turn the left or right scroll wheel
backward.
Fine focusing Moves the motorized focusing unit
downward.
Whenever a motorized mechanical or measuring stage is connected additionally to the system, the scroll
wheels permit additional fine movement of the stage in X or Y direction. If you wish to switch from fine
focusing to stage control and back, briefly press one of the two scroll wheels.
−Turn the left scroll wheel forward. Fine movement of the stage in –X direction
−Turn the left scroll wheel backward. Fine movement of the stage in +X direction
−Turn the right scroll wheel forward. Fine movement of the stage in +Y direction
−Turn the right scroll wheel backward. Fine movement of the stage in –Y direction

11.3 Pushbuttons
Further different microscope functions can be controlled with the three pairs of pushbuttons (Fig. 2/3).
These need to be configured accordingly beforehand (see main operating manual).
11.4 Touchscreen
Aside from controlling selected microscope functions, the touchscreen (Fig. 2/4) also serves to display all
the microscope settings and parameters required.
The display line on the lower edge of the touchscreen shows the current assignment of such control
elements as the joystick, the scroll wheels or the pushbuttons.
If this display line is briefly touched, the following will be shown or hidden:
−
the functions of the pushbuttons
−
the functions of the joystick and
scroll wheels.

•Press the Shut Down button in the Home
home page on the touchscreen.
When the safety query is answered by pressing the
button (Fig. 6), the system, including light
sources and illuminators, will be shut down (Fig. 7).
It will then be in the standby mode.
•Set the Power switch at the back of the EMS 3
controller to position O. The system will be
switched off completely.
•Then switch off light sources and illuminators
separately.

Nachstehende Hinweise sind besonders zu beachten:

Gefahr durch elektrischen Stromschlag
−Der Netzstecker des Gerätes ist mit einem Schutzleiterkontakt ausgeführt, deshalb darf
dieser nur in eine Steckdose mit Schutzkontakt eingeführt werden.
−Die Schutzwirkung darf nicht durch ein Verlängerungskabel ohne Schutzleiter außer Kraft
gesetzt werden.
−Im Fehlerfall kann lebensgefährliche Netzspannung berührt werden.
GEFAHR
Gefahr der Beschädigung des Gerätes durch eindringende Feuchtigkeit

Geräte mit Netzverbindung und deren Zubehör (insbesondere externe Tischnetzteile)

beschädigt, sind diese dauerhaft außer Betrieb zu nehmen und von der Netzspannung zu
trennen.

Bei Nichtbeachtung kann in beiden Fällen lebensgefährliche Netzspannung berührt

Wenn abnehmbare Netzkabel vorhanden sind, dann ist folgendes zu beachten:

−Zur Instandsetzung des Gerätes ist Verbindung mit dem ZEISS-Service aufzunehmen.
VORSICHT
Brandgefahr durch Wärmestau

Vor Abdecken des Gerätes mit einer Staubschutzhülle muss immer geprüft werden, ob
dieses ausgeschaltet ist.
−Auch das Zusetzen oder Abdecken von Lüftungsschlitzen ist verboten.
−Werden beide Hinweise nicht eingehalten, dann kann es zu einem Wärmestau führen, der
das Gerät beschädigt und im Extremfall einen Brand auslösen kann.
VORSICHT
Gefahr der Beschädigung des Gerätes durch falsche oder behelfsmäßige Sicherungen

Beim Wechseln von Gerätesicherungen dürfen nur Sicherungen gemäß den technischen
Daten verwendet werden.

Das Verwenden von anderen Sicherungen sowie das Kurzschließen der Sicherungshalter
sind verboten, weil es sonst zur Überhitzung, Qualmentwicklung oder
Brand im Gerät
kommen kann.
HINWEIS
Umweltschädigung durch unsachgemäße Entsorgung

Defekte Geräte gehören nicht in den Hausmüll. Sie sind entsprechend den nationalen
gesetzlichen Bestimmungen zu entsorgen. Der Gerätehersteller ist gesetzlich zur
Rücknahme von defekten Geräten verpflichtet.
−Probenabfall ist entsprechend den nationalen gesetzlichen Bestimmungen zu entsorgen.

4GARANTIEHINWEISE
Der Gerätehersteller leistet Garantie dafür, dass das Gerät bei Übergabe frei von Material- und
Fertigungsfehlern ist. Aufgetretene Mängel sind unverzüglich anzuzeigen und es ist alles zu tun, um den
Schaden gering zu halten. Wird ein solcher Mangel gemeldet, so ist der Gerätehersteller verpflichtet, den
Mangel nach seiner Wahl durch Reparatur oder Lieferung eines mangelfreien Gerätes zu beheben. Für
Mängel infolge natürlicher Abnutzung (insbesondere bei Verschleißteilen) sowie unsachgemäßer
Behandlung wird keine Gewähr geleistet.
Der Gerätehersteller haftet nicht für Schäden, die durch Fehlbedienung, Fahrlässigkeit oder sonstige Ein-
griffe am Gerät entstehen, insbesondere durch das Entfernen oder Auswechseln von Geräteteilen oder
das Verwenden von Zubehör anderer Hersteller. Hierdurch erlöschen sämtliche Garantieansprüche.
Mit Ausnahme der in dieser Kurz-Gebrauchsweisung aufgeführten Tätigkeiten dürfen keine Wartungs-
oder Reparaturarbeiten an SYCOP 3 ausgeführt werden. Reparaturen sind nur dem ZEISS-Kundendienst
oder durch diesen speziell autorisierten Personen gestattet. Sollten Störungen am Gerät auftreten, bitte
zuerst an die für Sie zuständige ZEISS-Vertretung wenden.
5BESTIMMUNGSGEMÄßER GEBRAUCH
Mit dem System Control Panel SYCOP 3 und dem dazu notwendigen Controller EMS 3 lassen sich die
Stereo- und Zoommikroskope

−SteREO Lumar.V12
−Axio Zoom.V16
bedienen.
Die ordnungsgemäße Bedienung der genannten Mikroskopsysteme ist für deren sicheren und
erfolgreichen Betrieb unerlässlich. Bitte lesen Sie deshalb vor Aufbau, Inbetriebnahme und Nutzung von
SYCOP 3 diese Bedienungsanleitung sowie die zugehörigen Bedienungsanleitungen des angeschlossenen
Mikroskops und weiterer ggf. vorhandener Zubehörkomponenten aufmerksam durch und machen sich
mit den Inhalten gründlich vertraut.
Die Bedienungsanleitungen sind so aufzubewahren, dass die für die Anwendung des Mikroskopsystems
erforderlichen Angaben allen Nutzern jederzeit zugänglich sind.
Die Steuerung und Kontrolle von im System angeschlossenen CAN-Komponenten erfolgt dabei über
Joystick, Scrollräder, Drucktasten, Fußregler (optional) und berührungssensitiven Bildschirm (Touch-
screen).
