Portable Drying Unit (PDU)
Operating Instructions
Z022-13 01/20
The Portable Drying Unit (PDU) can be operated using the batteries provided, a 12 volt vehicle power
outlet or from mains power. The following instructions are for battery power, instructions for other power
sources are provided on page 5.
Warming up the Portable Drying Unit
1. Ensure the battery is fully charged (refer to “Charging the Battery” on page 5).
•Ensurethedryingrackiswithintheunit.
•Ensurethelidisclosed.
2. Ensure battery is connected. Open battery cavity (slide located on right side of PDU) and ensure
male and female white clips are connected to battery.
3. Push the “Power” switch to the “Hot” position. This will turn the PDU on. The thermostat will already
be pre-set by Ziltek to the temperature desired by the client. The red heating light will come on. It is
located at the top left corner of the thermostat display next to the “Hot” label. The large internal fan
will circulate the air in the box to provide even heating.
4. The PDU will heat up to the pre-set temperature. This will take approximately 20-30 minutes in
ambient temperatures of 18-20oC when the set temperature is 40oC. This warm up time will vary
depending on ambient temperature.
5. It is suggested that you undertake your soil sampling while the device is reaching temperature.
6. Once the pre-set temperature has been reached, a small fan at the rear of the unit will operate to
draw new air into the PDU and exhaust the warm, humid air. The unit is now ready to dry samples.
Purpose
These instructions outline how to dry soil samples for RemScan using the Portable Drying Unit.

Sample Preparation
1. Label the sample slide with the sample ID. This can be achieved by writing the Sample ID on the
slide with an indelible marker, or by sticking a dymo label etc.
2. Place the wet soil sample on the sample slide according to the picture and description below.
3. For best results, each sample slide should represent one sample (5 sub-samples per sample).
4. All soil types can be dried using the front side (wells).

Back - Clay soil types
It is recommended that for clay soil types the back of the sample slide is used for faster drying times.
Ensure that a thin layer (smear) of the sample is applied and the sample is deep enough to cover the
spikes of the sample slide whilst ensuring the spikes are not visible. This can be achieved by using a
spatula as shown below.

Loading Samples into Portable Drying Unit
1. When the PDU has heated to the pre-set temperature the heating light on the thermostat will switch
o.Therearinternalfanwillturnonautomatically.
2. Remove the drying rack from the unit via the two metal handles. Ensure the lid of the PDU is
closed to prevent heat from escaping.
3. Place the sample slides (loaded with wet samples) on the sample cradles of the drying rack. Each
samplecradlecanbeliftedupandothemetalhandleofthedryingrack.
4. When all sample slides are loaded onto the sample cradle, each sample cradle is placed on the
drying rack ensuring the black edges are facing up and the bottom of each sample cradle sits on
the black edges of the sample cradle below.
5. Place the drying rack back in the PDU and close the lid.
6. Keep stationary until the PDU is emptied to avoid movement of samples.
NOTE: For better drying results ensure that all the samples have been prepared before putting them into
the PDU. This will reduce the loss of heat through repeated opening of the unit.
Drying Samples
1. Leave the PDU in a stationary position for approximately 30 minutes.
2. After 30 minutes the samples should be dry and can be removed. Drying times may vary according
to soil type. You may have to adjust drying time to suit the soil type.
3. Unload the dry sample slides.
4. Another lot of sample slides can be loaded onto the trays and placed in the PDU for drying.
5. EnsurethePDUisturnedoafteruse.Pleasenotethemainfan(recirculatingfan)isswitchedon

is at the desired temperature.

Cleaning the Sample Slides
Once the sample slide has been successfully measured with RemScan and no further scanning is re-
quired, the sample slide should be cleaned and reused. The procedure is:
1. If the sample is to be sent to laboratory for comparison with RemScan readings, empty the sample
slide into the jar which is to be sent to the laboratory. Otherwise, empty the sample back into the
container from whence it came.
2. Drop the sample slide into a bucket of water which contains a small amount of detergent (dish-
washing liquid is suitable).
3. Leave to soak for a few minutes.
4. Using a dishwashing brush (or similar), clean the slide.
5. Rinse the slide in clean water.
6. Stand slide and allow to drain and dry.
7. Slides are now ready for re-use. Otherwise store in a dry environment.
Scanning
Please refer to the RemScan Quick Start Guide for in-depth scan-
ning instructions. See below for additional instructions:
1. Prior to measurement with RemScan, tamp the soil in the
sampleslidetoensureaatsurface.
2. Hold the sample to the nose cone of RemScan while the
sample is still in the sample slide, ensure the sample slide is
level and the RemScan is still. If a Lab Stand is available, the
sample slides can be measured in that.
3. Press trigger on RemScan to start measurement without
moving the instrument. After approximately 15 seconds a TPH
concentration will be displayed on the Tablet screen.
4. Measureeachofthevesub-samplesloadedintothe
sample slide.

Operating Instructions

To operate Portable Drying Unit from external power supply:
1. Plug the two-pin power cable into the corresponding socket on the front of the PDU.
2. Then connect the power cable to an external power source as follows:
Option 1 - AC power
Attach the plugged-in power cable to the AC power supply unit. Then connect the power supply
unit to AC power using the IEC cable provided.
Option 2 - 12 volt vehicle power outlet
Attach the plugged in power cable to the 12 volt power outlet via the 12 volt plug end of the power
cable.
Charging the Battery
1. Remove battery from PDU, connect the charger directly to the battery lead. As stated on the charg-
er, if the LED is red the battery is charging and if the LED is blue the battery is already charged.
2. The PDU once fully charged will operate for approximately 6 hours before requiring a recharge or
battery swap.
3. Minimise the time the lid of the PDU is left open to reduce battery usage.
Changing the Pre-Set Temperature
ThetemperatureofthePDUisnormallypre-setto40⁰Cinthefactory.Thistemperaturewaschosento
be slightly above the site’s highest ambient temperatures to ensure drying of the sample, but not so high
as to volatilise components of the TPH, more than would have normally occurred at the site. If the oper-
atorchoosestochangethetemperatureofthePDU,he/sheshouldrstlyconsiderthetrade-obetween
drying of moisture and volatilisation of TPH.
1. Unscrew the protective clear plastic cover to access the temperature display.
2. Press SET button and the red LED in the bottom left of the display should blink.
3. Then press up or down arrows to change to the desired temperature. Note that the temperature
changes in one degree increments and that you may have to wait up to a second between each
one degree temperature change.
4. Press the SET key to save the desired temperature. The red LED in the bottom left of the display
should extinguish. The display will now show the temperature inside the drying box.
5. Place the protective clear plastic cover back on the temperature display and fasten.
