Conductors have res stance that opposes the current flow and produces a
voltage drop and heat ng. The res stance s d rectly proport onal to the length of
the conductor and s nversely proport onal to the th ckness. Consequently, a
longer and th nner conductor w ll have h gher res stance and w ll produce a
h gher voltage drop and more heat ng. The s ze of a conductor for a part cular
appl cat on w ll depend upon the max mum current t s requ red to carry and for
what d stance. The s ze of a conductor s des gnated by AWG (Amer can W re
Gauge) number. The smaller the AWG number, the th cker the conductor. The
conductors should be s zed for a max mum voltage drop of 2%. The cables
should be mult -stranded nsulated copper cable rated for at least 90 º C and
preferably o l res stant. To purchase cables, please v s t a weld ng or mar ne
supply store.
Cables for 24 VDC nput and 12 VDC output connect ons.
The cables on the 24 VDC nput s de must be able to carry a max. current of
approx 70 A. To l m t voltage drop to 2%, use # 4 AWG for d stance up to 6 ft. and
# 2 AWG for up to 10 ft. Use r ng type of term nals for M-6 bolt on the ends of the
cables to enable connect on to the M-6 bolts of the term nal block.
External fuses on the nput and output s des.
The nput and output connect ons should be made through 32 V, 30A fast blow
fuses (For example “2 p eces of Bussmann” Type ATC-30 or ATM-30 automot ve
type fuses n parallel or 1 p ece of Type MAX-60). The fuses should be connected
n ser es w th the pos t ve nput and output cables. The fuse on the 24 V nput s de
should be as close to the battery pos t ve term nal as poss ble. Th s w ll prevent
the poss b l ty of overheat ng & melt ng of the nput s de cables n case of short
c rcu t on the nput s de cabl ng (A battery can prov de very large currents dur ng
short c rcu t cond t on)
WARNING:
The warranty w ll be vo ded f the above external fuses are not used
Battery Charg ng
The CPC-60 can also be used as a 13.8 VDC battery charger. It can charge a 12V
starter or anc llary battery from a 24V system.
