CHAPTER 1
Introducing the Device
1.1 Overview
The VMG1312- B Series is a wireless VDSL rout er. I t h as a DSL port for super- fast I n t er net access
over analog (POTS) t elephone lines. The Device support s bot h Packet Transfer Mode ( PTM) and
Asynchr onous Transfer Mode ( ATM) . I t is back ward com pat ible wit h ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ in
case VDSL is not available.
Only use firmware for your Device’s specific model. Refer to the label on
the bottom of your Device.
The Device has a USB port used to share files via a USB m em ory st ick or a USB hard dr ive.
• The VMG13 12 - B10A w orks ov er t he analog t elephone syst em , POTS ( Plain Old Telephone
Ser vice) . The VMG13 12 - B30A w orks ov er I SDN ( I n t egrat ed Services Digital Network) or T- I SDN
( UR- 2) .
1.2 Ways to Manage the Device
Use any of t he following m ethods to m anage the Device.
• Web Configurator. This is recom m ended for every day m anagem ent of t he Device using a
( su ppor t ed) w eb br ow ser.
• TR- 069. This is an auto- configurat ion server used to rem ot ely configur e your device.
1.3 Good Habits for Managing the Device
Do t he following things regularly to m ake t he Device m or e secure and t o m anage t he Dev ice m or e
effect ively.
• Change t he password. Use a password that’s not easy to guess and t hat consist s of different
types of charact ers, such as num ber s and let ters.
• Writ e down t he password and put it in a safe place.
• Back up t he con figu rat ion ( an d m ake sur e you k now h ow t o r est or e it ) . Rest or ing an earlier
working configuration m ay be useful if the device becom es unst able or ev en crashes. I f you
forget your passwor d, you will have t o reset t he Device t o it s factory default settings. I f you
backed u p an earlier conf igur at ion f ile, y ou w ou ld not h ave t o t ot ally re- configur e t he Device. You
could sim ply r estore your last configurat ion.

1.4 Applications for the Device
Here are som e exam ple uses for which the Device is well suited.
1.4.1 Internet Access
Your Device provides shared I nternet access by connecting t he DSL port t o t he DSL or M OD EM
j ack on a split ter or you r t eleph one j ack . You can have m ultiple WAN services over one ADSL or
VDSL. The Device cannot w or k in ADSL and VDSL m ode at t he sam e t im e.
Note: The ADSL and VDSL lines share the sam e WAN (layer-2) interfaces that you
configure in t he Device. Refer t o Sect ion 6.2 on page 86 for t he N e t w ork Se t t in g
> Broadba nd screen.

You can also configure I P filtering on t he Device for secure I nternet access. When t he I P filt er is on,
all incom ing t raffic from the I nt er net to your net wor k is blocked by default unless it is initiat ed from
your network. This m eans t hat probes fr om t he outside t o your net wor k are not allowed, but y ou
can safely browse t he I nternet and download files.

1.4.2 Device’s USB Support
The USB port of t he Device is used for file- sharing.
File Sharing
Use t he built- in USB 2.0 port to share files on a USB m em ory stick or a USB hard drive ( B) . You can
connect one USB hard drive to t he Device at a t im e. Use FTP t o access t he files on t he USB dev ice.

Media Server
You can also use t he Device as a m edia server. This let s anyone on your network play video, m usic,
and phot os from a USB device ( B) connected t o t he Device’s USB port ( wit hout having t o copy t hem
t o anot her com put er ) .
