The NSA-220 lets you share files and back up data on your home network. Media clients
can also play video, music, and photo content files stored on the NSA-220. This guide
covers how to:
1Install hard drives.
2Connect the NSA.
3Access the NSA.
4Create a volume.
5Map the NSA to a
computer network drive.
6Use the NSA-220 as a
multi-media server.
7Back up files using
Memeo Autobackup.
See the User’s Guide on the
included CD for details on
configuring all of the NSA-
220’s features.
Requirements
You need the following before you start:
• NSA-220
• Included CD containing the NSA discovery Utility, the Memeo Autobackup program, media
client software, and User’s Guide
• Power cord and power supply (external)
• Included gray (Ethernet) cable
• One or two SATA I or SATA 3.0 Gbit/s (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) compati-
ble hard disk(s) with 15-pin SATA power connectors
• Philips screwdriver to install hard disks in the disk trays
• USB cable (optional: you only need this if you want to expand storage capacity by connect-
ing compatible USB (version 2) drives). It is recommended that the USB device use it’s own
external power adaptor if it has one.
• Computer with Network Interface Card (NIC) and TCP/IP installed
• Network device such as a switch, router, or hub

1 Install Hard Drives
1Hard drives are NOT hot swappable. The NSA-220 must be turned off
before you remove or install hard drive(s).
1Make sure the power and Ethernet cords are disconnected from the NSA-220.
2Loosen the
thumbscrews on the
rear panel and open
it.
3Use a
screwdriver to
remove the
retaining
screw from a
disk tray.
4Slide the disk
tray out.
5Place the disk
on a flat surface with the screw holes
facing up. Place the disk tray on top of
it and secure it with the screws as
shown.

6Slide the tray back into the disk bay. Make sure
the screw hole is at the top. Push the tray in all
the way so the screw hole at the top is flush with
the internal frame.
7Put the disk tray retaining screw back in.
8Repeat steps 3to 7for a second hard
drive if you have one.
9Put the rear panel back on and tighten
the thumbscrews.

2 Connect the NSA-220
1Use the included gray (Ethernet) cable to connect the
LAN port on the rear of the NSA-220 to a computer,
switch, or router on your network.
2Connect one end of the power cord to the POWER
socket on the rear of the NSA-220 and the other end to the
external power supply. Connect the external power supply to
a power outlet.
1Use ONLY the included power supply.
3Press the power button on the front of the NSA-
220 to turn it on. Look at the front panel lights.
VIf no lights turn on, make sure the power
cord is not loose and that the power
source is turned on.
• The power button light turns steady blue.
• The SYS light turns steady green after a suc-
cessful startup (it takes about 50 seconds).
• The HDD lights come on if the NSA-220 detects
hard drives in the disk bays.
• The rear panel LAN port has a light that turns
on if the Ethernet port is properly connected to
your network. It blinks while sending or receiv-
ing traffic.
"To turn off the NSA-220, press the power button in once only.

3 Access the NSA-220
For a Windows computer, use section 3.1.
For another type of computer (like Mac or Linux), use section 3.2.
3.1 Using the discovery Utility to Access the NSA-220
1Insert the included CD into your
CD-ROM drive. Click Setup in
the screen that displays. Then
click the NSA-220 Discovery
Utility link.
VIf this screen does not
display, use Windows
Explorer (My Computer)
to go to the CD-ROM
(commonly drive D).
Double-click setup.exe.
2The installation wizard begins. Follow the installer
instructions. Click Finish to complete the
installation.
3In Windows, click start > All Programs
> ZyXEL NSA > NSA discovery Utility
to run the discovery utility. If your
computer has more than one network
card, then you will be prompted to select
one.

4The utility lists the NSAs in
your network.
5Click the Admin icon to see
the web configurator login
screen (see section 4).
• If you need to change the
NSA-220 IP address, click
the icon under Config.
• To map the NSA-220 to a
Windows network drive,
click the icon under Map
(see section 6).
• To refresh the screen, click
discover.
3.2 Direct Access
Open Internet Explorer (or
another web browser like Firefox).
Type ‘nsa220’ as the web site
address and press [Enter] or click
Go.
4 NSA-220 Login
VIf you cannot get to the login screen, see the troubleshooting section at the
end of this guide.
1Enter the default user name ‘admin’
and password ‘1234’ and click Login.
VThe user name and
password are case sensitive.
You may need to make sure
you don’t have the caps lock
on.

2It is recommended that you change to a new password (and write it down). Click Apply
to save your changes and go to the next screen.
3The My NSA screen displays.
5 Create a Volume
1Click Administration.
2If there is not already an internal volume (storage area), click Create an Internal
Volume. If your hard drive already has a volume that you want to use, skip to section 6.

If you want to delete an existing volume, see the Storage Screens chapter in the User’s
Guide.
1Creating a volume formats the hard drives. All data will be lost.
3If you have two hard disks installed, select a disk configuration.
• RAID 0 (not recommended)
Has the highest write speeds but if one disk fails, you lose all the data on both
disks. Only use RAID 0 for non-critical data requiring high write speeds (like video,
graphics, and games). Total data storage space is limited to twice the capacity of
the smallest disk.
• RAID 1 (recommended)
Mirrors one disk’s data on the second disk for data security. RAID 1 is slower than
RAID 0, but you can recover all of your data if a disk fails. Total data storage space
is limited to the capacity of the smallest disk.
• JBOD (maximum data storage space)
Uses the whole storage capacity of each disk, even if there are two hard disks with
different storage capacities. With two hard disks, you can create two volumes (one
for each disk) so a failure of one hard disk should not affect the other. With two hard
disks in a single JBOD volume, you lose all the data on both disks if one disk fails.

4Click Apply

6 Map the NSA-220 to Your Computer Network Drive
You store files on the NSA-220 in shares (these are like shared Windows folders). Map a
NSA-220 share to a Windows network drive to be able to use Windows Explorer to transfer
files to and from the NSA-220. After mapping a share, you can drag and drop files between
your computer and the NSA-220.
1In Windows, click start > All Programs
> ZyXEL NSA > NSA discovery Utility
to run the discovery utility. If your
computer has more than one network
card, then you will be prompted to select
one.
2The utility lists the NSAs in
your network. Click the MAP
icon in the discovery utility
3The NSA-220 public folder
displays in Windows Explorer.

4Click Tools > Map Network Drive.
In the Drive field, select a drive
letter to use for the NSA-220. In
the Folder field, select the NSA-
220 (you may need to browse to
find it).
5If your computer does not have
the discovery utility installed, you can
open Windows Explorer and type two
back slashes followed by the NSA-220
server name (nsa220) or IP address.
7 Using the NSA-220 as a
Multi-media Server
The NSA-220 is also a media server. By default, computers with the included media client
software installed or media client devices (like the DMA-1000) can play media files in the
NSA-220’s Public, Video, Music and Photo shares. You can also apply the multi-media
server function to other shares.
"The NSA-220 provides no security for the multi-media server files. Any
DLNA-compliant media client on your network can play the multi-media
files.
7.1 Installing the Media Client Software on Your Computers
This section shows how to install the included DLNA-compliant media client software on a
computer. Skip to section 7.2 if you will just use a media client like ZyXEL’s DMA-1000.
7.1.1 Requirements

"You can only install the media client software on a Windows XP computer.
• Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 or above or Professional Service
Pack 1 or above
• Windows Media® Player 9 or above and Microsoft DirectX® 9.0 or above
• Celeron® 1GHz or above, Pentium® III or above (Pentium III 1GHz or above recom-
mended) or compatible
• 256MB or above recommended
7.1.2 Media Client Software Installation
1Put the CD into your CD-ROM. Click
Tools in the screen that displays.
Then click Media Client Software.
VIf this screen does not
display, use Windows
Explorer (My Computer) to
go to the CD-ROM
(commonly drive D). Double-
click setup.exe.
2The installation wizard appears. Follow the directions to install the software.

VSee the requirements section if you have trouble installing or using the
media server.
3Enter your information in this screen. Enter a user name (up to 64 ASCII characters
recommended). The company name is optional (up to 64 ASCII characters
recommended). The serial number is already entered for you, do not change it.
4If you see a screen asking about configuring the Windows XP firewall, click Yes. This
allows the NSA-220 to access the files on your computer that you share.
VRefer to the User’s Guide if your computer has another software firewall
(like ZoneAlarm for example) that you need to configure.

5The following screen displays if you do not have DirectX version 9.0 installed, click yes
to install it.
6Close any other applications and click Finish to restart your computer.
7.2 Play Your Media Files
Use a media client (like the DMA-1000W) or a computer with DLNA-compliant media client
software (included on your NSA-220 CD) to play video, music, and photo files stored on
the NSA-220. The client device must connect to the NSA-220 through the network. Do the
following to use the media client software for file playback. For other clients, refer to the
client’s documentation for how to use it.

1After your computer
restarts, click start > All
Programs > DigiOn >
DiXiM Media Client to start
the media client.
2The media client sorts the
shared files on your
network’s media servers
into MUSIC,VIDEO and
PHOTO menus. Use the
the SERVER menu to view
files on a specific media
server (like the NSA-220).
Select the menu with the content that you want to play. For example the VIDEO menu.
3Navigate to the folder with the file you want or just use the All Videos folder.
4Double-click the file you want to play.

VFiles with unsupported formats or codecs may not display properly. See the
User’s Guide product specifications appendix for details on the supported
formats and codecs. Since the media software uses your computer’s
installed codecs, it is also possible that the media client software supports a
file’s codec but the codec is not installed on your computer.
8 Backing up Files Using Memeo Autobackup
Use the Memeo Autobackup software included on the CD to automatically back up
selected files from your computer to the NSA-220 whenever you modify the files.
8.1 Requirements
Memeo Autobackup works with Windows 2000 Workstation with Service Pack 6, Windows
XP Pro, or Windows XP Home Edition.
8.2 Memeo Autobackup Installation and Setup
VThe Memeo Autobackup program uses the same network port as the
discovery utility to discover the NSA-220. To avoid a port conflict, turn off
the discovery utility before using Memeo Autobackup.
1Since a computer restart is required, close your other files and programs before
installing the Memeo Autobackup software.
2Insert the included CD into your CD-
ROM drive. Click the Tools icon in
the screen that displays. Then click
Memeo instant Backup Software.

VIf this screen does not display, use Windows Explorer (My Computer) to go
to the CD-ROM (commonly drive D). Double-click setup.exe.
3Follow the instructions to install the
software.
"Memeo Autobackup requires
Microsoft.NET version 1.1. The
wizard installs it for you if it is
not already on your computer.
4When you see the
following screen,
select Network
Places and click
the link to select
your back up
folder.

5Select the NSA-220’s mapped drive and click
OK.
6In this screen, select the items that
you want to back up.
7This screen lists
the items to be
backed up, just
click Next if you
do have already
selected
everything you
want to back up.

8Specify a name for your backup plan (or just use the default). Click Next and then
Done.
8.3 Using Memeo Autobackup After the Initial Setup
After you have installed and configured Memeo Autobackup, double-click the icon in
the system tray to open the program’s start screen.
If the icon is not displayed, you can click start > Programs > Memeo Autobackup >
Memeo Autobackup to start it.
