This guide describes the installation of the V6000/V6100 VoIP Media
Gateways, and specifically the optional BRI module.

FXO (Foreign Exchange Office) is the interface replacing the analog
telephone and connects to a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)
line from the Central Office (CO) or to a Private Branch Exchange (PBX).
The FXO is designed to receive line voltage and ringing current, supplied
from the CO or the PBX (just like an analog telephone). An FXO VoIP
gateway interfaces between the CO/PBX line and the Internet.
FXS (Foreign Exchange Station) is the interface replacing the Exchange
(that is, the CO or the PBX) and connects to analog telephones, dial-up
modems, and fax machines. The FXS is designed to supply line voltage
and ringing current to these telephone devices. An FXS VoIP gateway
interfaces between the analog telephone devices and the Internet.
WARNING: Ensure that you connect FXS ports to analog telephone or to
PBX-trunk lines only and FXO ports to Central Office (CO)/PBX lines only.
The V6000/V6100 gateways are supplied as sealed units and must be
installed or serviced only by qualified service personnel.

1QUICK START
This guide provides you with step-by-step procedures on how to quickly
setup the 3Com V6000/V6100 VoIP Gateways with one or more BRI
modules. Prior knowledge of IP networks is recommended.
The following steps provide a quick setup flow.
1Unpack the V6000/V6100 Gateways.
2Mount the V6000/V6100 Gateways.
3Cable the V6000/V6100 Gateways.
4Assign the V6000/V6100 Gateway IP Addresses.
5Configure the V6000/V6100 Gateways basic control protocol parameters.
6Configure the BRI ports.

2OVERVIEW OF THE BRI MODULE
This section provides information on the features and functions of the BRI
module.
Features The V6000/V6100 supports various ISDN BRI protocols such as ETSI, 5ESS,
and QSIG over BRI.
The BRI module supports 4 BRI ports used for connecting the PSTN to the
IP network. These modules provide RJ-45 ports. The BRI module can be
configured as Lifeline telephone interfaces, switching to the PSTN in case
of power failure or network problems.
Up to five BRI modules are supported, providing a total of up to 20 BRI
digital ports.
Additional
Functions
The BRI module supports the ITU-T I.430 standard, which defines the
ISDN-BRI layer 1 specification.
The configuration of the BRI port as NT or TE is identical to the
configuration of the ISDN Termination Side (see Figure 7) of the PRI as
follows:
■A port that is configured as User Side is configured as TE (Terminal
Equipment).
■A port that is configured as Network Side is configured as NT
(Network Termination).
When an NT port is active it drives a 38 V line voltage , and sends an
INFO1 signal (as defined in table 4 of the ITU-T I.430 recommendation)
on the data line, in order to synchronize to any TE port that is connected
to it.

To stop the voltage and the INFO1 signal on the line, the user can STOP
the trunk via the board's Web interface or via the SNMP tool.

3CABLING THE V6000/V6100
MEDIA GATEWAYS
CAUTION: The V6000/V6100 equipment is classified as Class 1 EN60950
and UL60950 and must be grounded at all times. Units providing power
sockets with three pins must be connected by service personnel to a
socket outlet with a protective grounding connection.
To cable the V6000 or V6100, perform these steps:
1The equipment must be permanently grounded using an
equipment-grounding conductor. Connect an electrically grounded strap
of 16 AWG wire (minimum) to the chassis grounding screw (located on
the rear panel) using the supplied washer. The connection to the
protective grounding must be in accordance with the regulations
enforced in the country of installation.
2For BRI interfaces, a BRI port can be configured either as TE (Terminal
Equipment = User Side) or NT (Network Termination = Network Side). The
pinout varies according to the configuration. See Figure 2 for details.

When in NT mode the BRI port drives a nominal voltage value of 38 V
with limited current supply of up to 100 mA. The voltage is of Power
Source 1 type (line voltage).
WARNING: To protect against electrical shock and fire, use a 26 AWG
min wire to connect T1 or E1 ports to the PSTN.

3Connect the first Ethernet connection (labeled I), located on the CPU
module of the V6000/V6100 front panel, directly to the network using a
standard RJ-45 Ethernet cable (and the second connection as optional
redundancy / backup). For the connector pinouts, see Figure 3, next.

For redundancy, 3Com recommends that you connect each of the
Ethernet connectors to a different switch.
When assigning an IP address to the V6000/V6100 using HTTP (see
“Assigning an IP Address Using HTTP”), you may need to disconnect this
cable and re-cable it differently.
4Using the supplied RS-232 cable, connect the V6000/V6100 RS-232 port
(labeled I0I0) to either the COM1 or COM2 RS-232 communication port
on your PC. Using the RS-232 port is optional.
5If you want to set up a dry contact system, refer to the User's Manual.
6Connect the left (active) 100-240V~50-60 Hz power socket to the mains
using the supplied cord.

4CONFIGURING THE V6000/V6100
The V6000/V6100 is supplied with application software already resident
in its flash memory (with factory default parameters).
The next section describes how to assign IP address to the V6000/V6100.
“Configuring BRI Trunks” describes how to set up the V6000/V6100 with
basic parameters using a standard Web browser (such as Microsoft™
Internet Explorer).
Assigning the IP
Address
3Com recommends that users assign an IP address to a V6000/V6100
using the HTTP method described next.
Assigning an IP
Address Using HTTP
To assign an IP address using HTTP, perform these steps:
1Disconnect the V6000/V6100 from the network and reconnect it to your
PC using one of the following two methods:
■Use a standard Ethernet cable to connect the network interface on
your PC to a port on a network hub / switch. Use a second standard
Ethernet cable to connect the V6000/V6100 to another port on the
same network hub / switch.
■Use an Ethernet cross-over cable to directly connect the network
interface on your PC to the V6000/V6100.
2Change your PC's IP address and subnet mask to correspond with the
V6000/V6100 factory default IP address and subnet mask (see Table 2,
later in this section). For details on changing the IP address and subnet
mask of your PC, refer to Windows™Online Help (Start > Help).
3Access the V6000/V6100 Embedded Web Server (see “Accessing the
Embedded Web Server”).
4In the Quick Setup screen (Quick Setup menu), configure the
V6000/V6100 IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway IP

Address fields under IP Configuration to correspond with your network
IP settings.
Record and retain the IP address and subnet mask you assign the
V6000/V6100. Do the same when defining a new username or password.
5Click Reset Device, and then at the prompt, click OK; the V6000/V6100
applies the changes and restarts.
6Disconnect your PC from the V6000/V6100 or from the hub / switch
(depending on the connection method you used).
7Reconnect the V6000/V6100 and your PC (if required) to the network.
8Restore your PC's IP address and subnet mask to their original settings. If
necessary, restart your PC and re-access the V6000/V6100 via the
Embedded Web Server with its new assigned IP address.
Accessing the
Embedded Web
Server
To access the Embedded Web Server, perform these steps:
1Open a standard Web-browsing application such as Microsoft™Internet
Explorer™(Version 6.0 and higher) or Netscape™Navigator™(Version 7.2
and higher).
2In the URL field, specify the IP address of the gateway (for example,
http://10.1.10.10); the Embedded Web Server's Enter Network
Password screen appears, shown in Figure 4.

3Enter the username (default: Admin), and password (default: Admin).
Note that the User Name and Password fields are case-sensitive.
4Click OK; the Home page appears.

Configuring BRI
Trunks
To configure the BRI trunks, perform these steps:
1Enter the Home Page screen shown in Figure 5 and click the Home icon.

Numbering System All Modules are numbered consecutively from the left as a Module ID #.
All the digital devices are numbered consecutively from the left as a Trunk
#.
Within each module, digital devices are numbered consecutively from the
left as a Trunk ID #.

Table 3 shows a combination of 2 E1/T1 Digital Trunks as Trunks # 1 and
2; 4 BRI ports as Trunks # 3, 4, 5 & 6; and an analog FXS module without
a Trunk ID or Trunk #.
The BRI is in Module ID #2 and the 1st BRI port on the left is Trunk ID #1,
as shown in Figure 6.
2In the main menu bar (left side), click Advanced Configuration (the
second menu item), then select OK > PSTN Settings > Trunk Settings.
The screen shown in Figure 6 appears.

3Click the appropriate BRI module. It is Module ID = 2, Trunk ID = 1 in the
diagrams.
4From the Protocol Type drop-down list (green arrow in the above screen),
select the required protocol, in this case BRI EURO ISDN.
5Different trunks can be defined with different ISDN variants (for Protocol
Type values, see Tab l e 4, later in this section) on the same gateway.
Figure 7 shows the selection.
