Helps reduce lime and sediment buildup
and maximizes hot water output. Made
from the same long-lasting PEX cross-
linked polymer as our commercial dip tubes.
HEAT TRAP NIPPLES
Helps mitigate standby heat loss. Factory-

COREGARD™ANODE ROD
Our anode rods have a stainless steel
core that extends the life of the anode
rod, allowing superior tank protection far

SELF-POWERED ELECTRONIC
GAS VALVE
A. O. Smith gas water heaters are equipped
with a self-powered electronic gas valve
with intelligent control logic. The gas valve
has an internal microprocessor that provides
enhanced operating parameters and tighter differentials
for precise sensing and faster heating response to optimize
performance. The self-powered electronic gas valve uses a
thermopile to generate the power needed to operate the
electronic gas control without requiring an external power
source. It also incorporates an LED Status Indicator that
monitors system operation and service diagnostics.

A patented commercial-grade formual
that provides superior corrosion
resistance compared to industry-standard
glass lining.
ENHANCED-FLOW BRASS DRAIN
VALVE
• Our residential water heaters have a
solid brass, tamper-resistant, enhanced-
flow, ball type drain valve.
• Uses a standard female hose fitting that
allows for fast and easy draining during
maintenance.
• Designed for easy operation, this valve
includes an integral screwdriver slot that
features a 1/4 turn (open/close) radius,
which not only permits full straight-
through water flow but also a quick and
positive shut off.

ELEMENTS
ProLine®Master electric products are
outfitted with stainless steel upper and lower elements
that are modeled after those used in our industry-leading
commercial line. These elements are built to last with
thicker walls and a larger diameter sheath than the

QUICK INSTALL GUIDE
Shut off main gas supply or close ball valve on gas connection.

Shut off main water supply or close ball valve on cold water inlet to water heater.

Turn on hot water at the nearest faucet, which will help drain tank.

Drain existing water heater and remove. Speed up drain time by using a transfer pump
(See HD Supply Part # 402453 or 403116).

If your property has a backflow or a check valve on the
plumbing system, then a thermal expansion tank should
be installed near the water heater to protect from
damage caused by thermal expansion
(See HD Supply Part # 640585 or 640590).

Set new water heater in place and connect to water
supply. Using push-to-connect water heater connectors
will save installation time (See HD Supply Part # 549860
or 400531). Connect T&P valve according to local code
requirements.

Turn on main water supply or open ball valve on cold
water inlet and fill tank.

Check flow rate from open faucet (hot water side) until
water runs full flow for three minutes to ensure the tank
is completely full. Tank must be completely full before
lighting pilot.

Check all water connections for leaks.
Most leaks are caused by poor connections
and not a tank leak.

Connect gas supply (See HD Supply Part # 216300
or 216800) and check for gas leaks using gas leak
detector fluid (See HD Supply Part # 109122).

Connect vent pipe to water heater draft hood. Gas water
heaters must have access to adequate combustion air
and be properly vented.

Light pilot using lighting instructions and safety
information on water heater.

10 STEPS TO FAST & EFFECTIVE INSTALLATION
Important: read and follow the printed installation instructions and use &
care guide that came with your A. O. Smith water heater.
Turn off circuit breaker to water heater. Because circuit breakers can be mismarked, always
check incoming power wires on water heater with a voltmeter.
Turn on hot water at the nearest faucet, which will help drain the tank.
Shut off main water supply or close ball valve on cold water inlet to water heater.

MECHANICAL RESIDENTIAL
GAS VALVE TROUBLESHOOTING Check for pilot. If pilot is not lit, try relighting the pilot
using instructions on water heater. The pilot can be hard
to see, so you may need to dim the room lights.
If pilot goes out as soon as control knob is released,
there is likely an electrical problem. Press the reset
button on the thermal switch. If thermal switch tripped,
you should hear or feel a click.
