Introduction
These instructions describe the use of the Activio heart rate monitoring system.
Receptionists, administrative staff and instructors should all read through this
document carefully before the product is used.

Overview
In the cycling studio there is a screen where “intensity meters”or dials/gauges are
displayed with a beamer/projector. Each gauge has a number indicating which heart
rate chest belt it is connected to. The users are thus anonymous, because the number
on the chest belt is not visible in its location under the clothing.
Intensity zones
White zone 50 - 60 % Light
Blue zone 60 - 70 % Moderate
Green zone 70 - 80 % Hard
Yellow zone 80 - 90 % Very hard
Red zone 90 - 100 % Maximum

Heart rate chest belt
Function
The heart rate chest belt is placed around the chest and registers electrical signals
from the heart. The heart rate (or pulse) is measured in beats per minute and is
digitally transmitted to a receiver in the studio. This digital transmission means that
there is no risk for interference from other bands, even if two people are very close to
one another. Ordinary receivers in wrist heart rate monitors cannot receive the signal
from Activio's heart rate chest belt.
Use
The heart rate chest belt is placed around the chest with solid contact directly against
the skin, with the text right side up and facing outward. In order for the measurement
to be as good as possible, it is important that the band not be shifted to one side and
that the two contact surfaces on the back side have solid contact with the skin.
Here are a few tips for improving contact:
The two grooved electrode surfaces on the back side of the chest belt may be
moistened before use. Normally the chest belt transmits data with no
problems, even if it is not moistened beforehand. When you start to sweat, the
contact improves further from the salts released by the body.

Page 6(16) User guide Activio Fitness System

Tighten the elastic band. If the chest belt is too loose, there will be either poor
registration or no registration at all of the heart signals.
The band can be placed just below the edge of a bra, or under the band of the
bra in order to sit more securely.
Storage and care
The heart rate chest belt consists of a plastic unit and an elastic band. The plastic unit
has two electrodes on the back side to register the heart rate, as well as a radio
transmitter in the middle to transmit the heart rate signals to the receiver.
Cleaning
After each session, clean the band thoroughly with water and mild soap (the sameused
for cleaning the exercise cycles). Thoroughly clean the two grooved electrode surfaces
Never use alcohol or other cleaning solutions or harsh materials when cleaning, as
this could severely damage the chest belt.
Avoid immersing the chest belt in water, as liquid may work its way into the battery
through the seal on the battery cover.
Clean the elastic band by hand with ordinary laundry detergent (maximum 30º C).
Consider the possibility of allergies when selecting a laundry detergent!
Storage
Do not expose the chest belt to temperatures outside the 0º C to 50º C range.
Avoid storing it in direct sunlight.
Do not pull or bend the plastic part of the chest belt forcefully, as this could
damage the electrodes.
Do not store the chest belt damp, for example along with sweaty work-out
clothes. This causes the band to "think" that it is still on a person and it will not
turn off, which shortens the lifetime of the battery. .
We recommend hanging the belts on a long peg (Note: avoid pegs with a hook in
the end as they might damage the plastic fittings when taken on and off) on the
wall or store them in a basket after being dried.
Chest belt battery
The chest belt is powered by a lithium battery (CR 2032), which does not need to be
charged between classes. The lifetime of the battery (supplied with the band) is
normally about 1,000 hours when used 1 hour/day. Differences in battery use may arise
between different chest belts.

User guide Activio Fitness System Page 7(16)

When the battery starts to run down, the range of the band gradually decreases. The
system gives no warning. The participant experiences the problem as the heart rate
indicator simply giving no results, since the heart rate data from the participant does
not reach the receiver. First, test if this may be due to other problems; see the section
on troubleshooting.
The belt can easily be damaged if it is handled incorrectly.
Heart rate chest belt troubleshooting
If the chest belt is not functioning as it should, check the following:
Is the chest belt correctly placed on the chest? The entire belt should have solid
and snug contact directly against the skin, with the Activio logo right side up
and facing outward.
If a chest belt does not function, test it on another person. If it still does not
function, take another chest belt and test it on the same person.
Try moistening the electrodes; this improves contact with the skin
If a person has a lot of chest hair, this may lead to poor contact. In such cases, a
special gel (silica gel/electrode gel, available at pharmacies and sport shops)
can be lightly applied to the band in order to improve contact. Thoroughly clean
off the gel after the training session, both out of consideration for the next user
and because the gel may worsen the function of the chest belt if it dries on the
belt.
Are the electrodes dirty or do they look worn?
Has the belt been used close to 1,000 hours? If so, the battery may need to be
replaced. If the chest belt has been stored in a damp environment, this may
have prevented the chest belt from turning off properly, causing the battery to
be drained more quickly.

Touch Screen
Before each session the users must log onto the system with the help of a simple
menu on the touch screen. Then the system connects the appropriate chest belt to the
user's maximum heart rate, so that the meter in the cycling studio shows the correct
intensity zones.
Log on
1. When the system is stand-by the start
view is visible as shown to left. On the
touch screen, the user press the number
which corresponds to the number on its
own Activio chest belt.
2. If the user knows its maximum heart
rate, it is entered immediately and then
the user press "Next."
If the user cannot estimate its maximum
heart rate, press "Calculate Maximum
Heart Rate" and provide the users age.
The computer calculates an approximate
maximum heart rate based on the
formula "226 – age." If the wrong age is
entered by accident, the user can press
"Clear" and enter a new age. Press
"Next" when finished to continue.
3. Finally, the user confirm the
information by pressing "OK."
If something is wrong, then press
"Change" to go back and make a change.
"Start over" may be selected at any time
taking you directly to the start view.

Troubleshooting
Symptom What to do
The project shows
a black image
Is the projector on? Are the green lamps on the underside
illuminated?
Is the system unit on? (A green diode should be illuminated on the
computer.)
Try turning off the projector, waiting one minute and turning it on
again.
The projector
shows a test image
with the
manufacturer's
logo
Is the system unit on (see above)?
Is the VGA cable between the receiver computer and the projector
properly connected?
Try turning off the projector, waiting one minute and turning it on
again.
No heart rate
values are shown The system seems to function otherwise and it is possible to log in
new users but no heart rate is shown for the meters in use. Check
that the black radio receiver is connected to the system unit. The
black cable's USB contact should be connected to the computer
and a blue diode should illuminate on contact. A green diode should
be flashing on the black radio receiver. Check also that the light-
gray antenna is connected to the black radio receiver and aimed
toward the middle of the studio.
The heart rate
values from a user
are updated
differently
depending on
where the user is
in the studio.
Is the antenna securely placed in the black radio receiver and is it
aimed with the flat forward side toward the middle of the studio?
Tighten securely and check that it is pointing outward.
Is anything getting in the way of the antenna, e.g. a metal screen,
whiteboard, etc.? Move any obstacles which interfere with the radio
transmission. Does this apply to all users or only one?
The touch screen
does not recognize
that it is being
pressed.
Is the terminal locked? In that case, a small warning text appears
on the screen. Choose "Unlock Terminal" and enter the code. Has
the USB cable between the touch screen and the systemunit been
pulled out by mistake? Check that it is properly inserted on both
sides.
In Case of a Power Outage
The system unit, projector and touch screen should normally always be connected, but
if there has been a power outage or if power to the system has been turned off by
mistake, it re-starts automatically. When the system unit in the studio gets power the
system is started automatically and the touch screen is activated.
If you know that the power will be off, for example during renovation, or if you are going
to dismantle the system, then it should be turned off first. Go to the menu "System"

User guide Activio Fitness System Page 15 (16)

(see "Restarting the System" section) and choose "Shutdown." Wait about one minute
before turning the power off.
Calibration of Touch Screen
The touch screen's calibration settings could be lost after a power outage, if the
buttons on the screen doesn’t work or wrong buttons is pressed you need to re-
calibrate the touch screen.
Restart the systemand wait in front of the touch screen when the system is restarting.
After up to 60-90 seconds the screen should now display an grey image with three red
circles, which are used to calibrate the touch screen. Press in the middle of each one
of the three circles.
After pressing all three rings, confirm the setting by pressing the button with a green
check mark.
