Installation Checklist
To install the Adaptec 335SAS enclosure, complete these tasks:
❏Work through the steps in Before You Begin (see page 10).
❏Install disk drives into the enclosure (see page 11).
❏Optional: Remove the fan (see page 12).
❏Install the enclosure into your computer (see page 14).
❏Connect the enclosure to a controller (see page 15).
❏Connect the power cables and the LED or I2C cable (see page 18).
Before You Begin
Before you begin, complete these preinstallation tasks:
1Install a SAS or SATA controller and device drivers into your
computer. For instructions, refer to the controller’s documentation.
2Remove all components from the packaging and inspect them. Place
on an antistatic surface until you are ready to use them.
3If you are using new disk drives, follow the manufacturer’s
installation instructions.
4Take appropriate safety precautions to protect yourself and your
equipment.
Caution: Before touching any of the enclosure components,
ground yourself and take ESD precautions. Use an antistatic
wrist strap and a grounding wire as a minimum precaution.
You will need a Phillips screwdriver to complete the installation.

Installing Disk Drives
Note: To hot-swap a disk drive, see page 21.
1Press the lever button on the drive carrier, then pull open the lever to
release the drive carrier from the enclosure.
2Place a SAS or SATA disk drive into the driver carrier, then secure it
in place with two screws on each side.

Adaptec Storage Enclosure 335SAS ●12
3Hold the drive carrier so that the LEDs are on the right and the lever
is fully open. Slide it into the drive slot until you can hook the lever
into place and click it closed.
4Repeat for all disk drives.
5To remove the fan before installation, see page 12. Otherwise,
continue with Installing the Enclosure on page 14.
Removing the Fan (Optional)
You can remove the enclosure’s cooling fan before installation if space
inside your server is limited and if your computer will provide sufficient
cooling without it.
Note: If you don’t disable the fan function before removing it, a loud
alarm will sound when the enclosure is turned on. To disable the alarm,
see Step 2 on page 13.
To r e m ove t h e f a n :
1Turn the enclosure so that the back is facing you. Gently press the
tabs on the sides of the fan and pull to remove it from the enclosure
(see figure on page 13).

Adaptec Storage Enclosure 335SAS ●13
2Place a jumper on J42 to disable the fan function. (See the figure on
page 9 for jumper location.)
You may want to remove and replace the back cover to gain access to
the jumper(s) or other components.
3Continue with Installing the Enclosure on page 14.

Adaptec Storage Enclosure 335SAS ●14
Installing the Enclosure
1Turn off your server and disconnect the power cord.
2Open the cabinet, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
3Discharge any static electricity build-up by touching a grounded
metal object, such as the exposed metal parts on the back of your
computer.
4Install the enclosure, using the screws provided in the kit. (Your
server cabinet may not look exactly the same as the one shown in the
figure below.)
5Continue with Connecting to a Controller on page 15.

Adaptec Storage Enclosure 335SAS ●15
Connecting to a Controller
To connect the Adaptec 335SAS enclosure, follow the instructions for
your Adaptec SAS or SATA controller.
Connecting One Enclosure to a SATA Controller
Using an internal SATA fan-out cable, connect the enclosure to the
SATA ports on the controller. It’s important to attach the correct
connector to each port. When connecting to the backplane, port 0 starts
at the bottom of the connector.

Connecting Two Enclosures to a SATA Controller
Note: This procedure is for SATA controllers that support more than 4
disk drives.
Using 2-internal SATA fan-out cables, connect each enclosure to the
SATA ports on the controller.
Note: If you are connecting two enclosures to your controller, ensure
that you select a different I2C address for each enclosure. This can be
done by populating the 3-pin jumper J43 differently for both
enclosures. (See jumper location on page 9.)

Adaptec Storage Enclosure 335SAS ●18
Completing the Connections
1Connect two internal power cables to the power connectors on the
enclosure.
2SATA controllers—Connect both the LED cable and the I2C cable to
the controller and enclosure. When connecting more than one
Adaptec 335SAS enclosure, the two I2C cables must be daisy chained
from one enclosure to the other.
For help locating connectors on the enclosure, see the figure on page 9.
For more information and to help locate connectors on your controller,
refer to the controller’s documentation.
Monitoring the Enclosure
This describes how the enclosure’s LEDs help you monitor enclosure
and drive status. It also explains how to silence the alarm when it
sounds.
