3. Important information on blood pressure and its measurement
3.1. How does hi h/low blood pressure arise?
Your l v l of blood pr ssur is d t rmin d in a part of th brain call d th circulatory c nt r.
This part of your brain r sponds to a situation through f dback with th n rvous syst m.To adjust
th blood pr ssur , th str ngth and fr qu ncy of th h art (Puls ) as w ll as th width of circulatory
blood v ss ls is alt r d. Blood v ss l width is alt r d by fin muscl s in th blood v ss l walls.
Th l v l of art rial blood pr ssur chang s p riodically during h art activity: During blood j c-
tion from th h art (Systol ) th valu is maximal (systolic blood pr ssur valu ). At th nd of th
h art’s r st p riod, Diastol or diastolic blood pr ssur valu , blood pr ssur falls to a low valu .
Blood pr ssur valu s must li within c rtain normal rang s in ord r to pr v nt particular dis as s.
3.2 Which values are normal?
Blood pressure is too high if at rest, your diastolic pressure is above 90mmHg and/or the
systolic blood pressure is over 160mmHg. Y u sh uld bring these values t the attenti n f
y ur d ct r immediately. L ng-term values at this level endanger y ur health due t
the ass ciated advancing damage t the bl d vessels in y ur b dy.
Sh uld the syst lic bl d pressure values lie between 140mmHg and 160mmHg
and/ r the diast lic bl d pressure values between 90mmHg and 95mmHg, please
c nsult y ur d ct r, and check y ur bl d pressure regularly.
With bl d pressure values that are t l w, i.e. syst lic values under 105mmHg
and/ r diast lic values under 60mmHg, please c nsult y ur d ct r.
Even with normal blood pressure values, a regular self check with your blood pressure mon
itor is recommended. In this way you can detect possible changes in your values early and react
appropriately, in consultation with your physician.
If you are undergoing medical treatment to control your blood pressure, please keep a
record of your blood pressure levels by carrying out regular self measurements at specific times
of the day. Show these values to your doctor. Never use the results f y ur measurements
t disc ntinue r independently alter the drug d ses prescribed by y ur d ct r.

long-t rm continuously incr as d blood pr ssur valu s, th h art will b com structurally damag d.
Th r ar many diff r nt caus s of high blood pr ssur . W diff r ntiat b tw n common pri-
mary ( ss ntial) hyp rt nsion, and s condary hyp rt nsion. S condary hyp rt nsion (high) can b r -
lat d to sp cific organ malfunctions. Pl as consult your doctor for information about th possibl
origins of your own incr as d blood pr ssur valu s.
