PageMaker Edition
You can work with InDesign CS PageMaker
Edition in many different ways. In this section,
you’ll find directions to specific information to
help you accomplish some common InDesign CS
PageMaker Edition tasks.
If you want to create your first InDesign
document
•
Choose File > New > Document. Specify the
page size, columns, and margins. If you want to
change these settings, choose File > Document
Setup. You can enable layout adjustment to
automatically adjust your page items to the new
document settings.
•
Use the Pages palette to create master pages and
document pages. Base one master page on
another, creating an ongoing relationship
between them. Editing the“parent”master page
causes changes to ripple through all the “child”
master pages.

Import graphics into your document.
•
Add text frames to the pages of your document.
Each connected set of text frames is a story.
• Use the Swatches palette to set up a library of
colors to use in the document.
•
Set up document-wide layers, which work like
one or more transparent overlays. Each layer
can contain elements such as text, images, and
drawn objects. Hide, lock, and reorder layers
with ease to achieve the effect you want.
•
Create and import tables. In one step, you can
convert tab-delimited text into an InDesign
table from sources including Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Excel, and database applications.
•
Create bulleted and numbered lists. Numbered
lists are updated automatically when you add or
remove paragraphs. (See “About bulleted and
numbered lists” on page 46.)

laying out pages with frames, threading text
frames, applying color, or working with layers or
tables, see InDesign Help.
If you want to produce superb typography
•
You have a choice of composition engines to
help you determine the visual “color” of your
text. The single-line composer considers one
line at a time, while the paragraph composer
compares and adjusts multiple lines at once,
producing superior typography.
•
Adjust hyphenation and justification controls to
enhance the appearance of type.
•
Use optical margin alignment to control
whether punctuation and edges of letters
“hang” outside margins, thus making the edges
of a text block appear more even.
•
To achieve precise spacing between type
characters, you can choose among four kerning
options, including optical kerning, which lets
InDesign determine smooth spacing for
adjacent characters, even for lines of type with
mixed fonts and sizes.
•
InDesign supports the advanced layout
capabilities of OpenType
®
fonts, including
swashes, discretionary ligatures, and other
features that previously required switching to
a different font. In addition, InDesign offers
easy access to the alternate glyphs common in
OpenType fonts.

If you want to add flair to your artwork
•
Apply editable drop shadows, feathering, and
other transparency settings to text, graphics,
and images in a few quick steps. InDesign gives
service providers and printers the control they
need to reliably output transparency effects.

•
To create a quick design element for your
publication, use the Pen tool or Pencil tool to
draw new paths or to edit the paths from images
you’ve inserted into your document. Use the
scissors tool to cut paths apart. Combine
multiple paths into compound paths to create
unusual shapes with transparent areas. Convert
text to paths to create frames you can fill with
images, graphics, or other text.
•
Format text along any path in InDesign. Create
a 3D appearance and apply special effects, such
as 3D Ribbon or Gravity. Using slider
indicators, manipulate start and end points for
the text.
•
“Nest” text and graphics frames. Use any
object—including basic or hand-drawn shapes
and converted text—as a frame, and then paste
other frames into it to produce eye-catching
design elements in a few quick steps.
•
Give your shapes depth and dimension by
applying gradient strokes and fills to the shapes.
Specify linear or radial gradients, and then use
the Gradient tool to adjust the angle of the
linear gradient or the center point of a radial
gradient.

If you want to prepare your document for
output
•
To prepare a document for Adobe
®
PDF output,
add hyperlinks, bookmarks, and interactive
buttons that perform an action (such as
jumping to a page) when clicked in Acrobat
®
or
Adobe Reader
®
. You can also add movies and
sound clips that can be played in the PDF
document.
•
To impose a document, such as a booklet, use
ALAP
™
InBooklet
™
SE. (See “Using InBooklet”
on page 51.)
• Export an Indesign document directly to
Adobe
®
PDF.
•
Produce color separations to separate the
composite art into its component colors.
•
Prepare a document for commercial printing.
Perform a preflight check and package files for
handoff.

Repurpose documents for the Web. Using

, you can quickly

PDF for use on the Web.

If you want to create book-length
documents
•
Group multiple documents into a book list.
• Set up sequential page numbering in each book
document.
•
Generate tables of contents, cross-references,
and indexes. InDesign can easily preflight and
package, print, or export to Adobe PDF all of
the documents in a book list. InDesign
preserves cross-references, table of contents
entries, and index entries as hyperlinks in a PDF
file.

If you want to enhance your productivity
• Use shortcut keystrokes for commonly used

Set preferences to determine how InDesign
documents and objects behave initially. If you
change settings when no documents are open,
your changes set the defaults for new
documents. (For details, see InDesign Help.)
• Arrange palettes to suit your needs.You can save
the current sizes and positions of palettes as a
custom workspace. (For details, see InDesign
Help.)

Merge database information into a document.

PageMaker Plug-in Pack features
The Adobe PageMaker Plug-in Pack adds these
enhanced features to InDesign CS:
PageMaker 6.0 publication converter Convert
PageMaker 6.0
x documents and templates to
InDesign CS format. This capability expands the
conversion support currently built into InDesign
CS, which enables you to open PageMaker 6.5–7.
x
and QuarkXPress
®
3.3–4. x documents. In some
cases, you can even open damaged PageMaker files
that you were unable to open in PageMaker. (See
“About PageMaker document conversion” on
page 42.)

InBooklet plug-in for document imposition Use
the InBooklet plug-in to automatically rearrange
a document’s pages with complete control over
margins, gaps, bleeds, creep, and crossover traps.
Choose among several imposition styles,
including 2-up saddle stitch, 2-up perfect bound,
and 2-, 3-, and 4-up consecutive. (See “Using
InBooklet” on page 51.)
Automated bullets and numbering Automati-
cally create and style bulleted and numbered lists
to organize information and make it easier to
skim. Save numbered and bulleted list settings in
paragraph styles, which you can apply over and
over again. Numbered lists update automatically
when changes are made. (See “About bulleted and
numbered lists” on page 46.)
Data Merge Create customized documents, such
as catalogs, direct mail campaigns, business cards,
form letters, and mailing labels. Merge text and
image data exported from a database or
spreadsheet and saved as a comma-delimited file
(.CSV) or as a text file (.TXT) into InDesign
layouts. Data merge is flexible enough to handle
a variety of layouts, whether you’re incorporating
a single record per page to create personalized
letters or tiling multiple records per page to
generate a catalog, produce business cards, and
more. (See “Using Data Merge” on page 57.)
Position tool Resize and move images and their
frames, or reposition image content in relation to
frames using the handy Position tool, which works
similarly to the Crop tool in PageMaker 7.0. (See
“Using the Position tool” on page 72.)
Template Browser Jump-start your design
projects with any of the InDesign templates
included with the PageMaker Edition. Use the
Template Browser palette to browse, search for,
add, delete, and recategorize templates. (See
“Using the Template Browser palette” on page 66.)
PageMaker compatible keyboard shortcuts Work
at peak efficiency by switching the keyboard
shortcuts in InDesign CS to match the shortcuts
you’ve already learned in PageMaker. (See “Using
the PageMaker keyboard shortcut set” on
page 73.)
PageMaker toolbar Enjoy easy access to
commonly used commands through a toolbar
similar to ones used in Adobe Acrobat
®
software
and Microsoft Office. Also use the PageMaker
toolbar to quickly launch Adobe Illustrator or
Photoshop software, or to package InDesign
documents for Adobe GoLive

or export them as
