THR9 Ex - Safety Instructions
1 APPLICATION
The THR9 Ex is an explosion-protected, water-, dust- and impact-resistant
TETRA radio for industrial applications in areas with an increased risk of
explosion in zones 1, 2, 21 and 22 in accordance with the directives 1999/92/EC
and 94/9/ EC (ATEX). It also complies with the equivalent IECEx standards.
2 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
These safety instructions contain information and safety regulations which must
be rigorously observed for safe operation in the described conditions. Failure to
observe this information and these instructions can have serious consequences
or may violate regulations.
Please read these safety instructions carefully before starting to use the device.
In the event of conflicting information, the details specified in the safety
precautions shall apply. In case of doubt (in the form of translation or printing
errors), the English version shall apply.
3 FAULTS AND DAMAGE
If there is any reason to suspect that the safety of the radio has been impaired,
it must be withdrawn from use and removed immediately from the Ex area.
Measures must be taken to prevent it from being restarted accidentally.
The safety of the radio may be compromised, if, for example:
• There is visible damage to the housing
• The radio has been subjected to excessive loads
• The radio has been improperly stored (see the storage conditions in chapters
5 Ex data and 6 Specifications)
• The radio has been damaged in transit
• Radio markings or inscriptions are illegible
• Malfunctions occur
• Permitted limit values (e.g. ambient temperature, temperature class,
IP-protection value etc.) have been exceeded (see the ATEX certificate)
Refer to TH9 User Guide, PS11530 for operating instructions (only from
chapters 1 to 13).
For THR9Ex, the following TH9 features are not applicable or proposed:
• Battery installation (see chapter 7 Replacing the battery)
• Active holder profile (not implemented)

4 SAFETY REGULATIONS
The use of the THR9 Ex explosion-protected TETRA radio assumes that the
operator observes the normal safety regulations and has read the certificate
of conformity to avoid faulty operation of the radio.
The following regulations must be observed:
• The radio must not be opened inside Ex areas
• The unit must not be used in close proximity to processes generating high
electrostatic charges
• Only the certified battery BLN Ex-2* must be used according to table Approval
designation of battery pack in chapter 5 Ex data
Note: * represents a replacement character.
• The battery can be changed inside gas-hazardous locations 2G/3G (Zone 1/2)
• Inside gas-hazardous locations, the spare batteries must always be carried
inside the SBC-Ex safety-bags. When being replaced, the batteries must only
be removed from the bag for a short time, and the replaced battery put back
in the safety bag immediately
• When replacing the battery, ensure that both the radio and battery terminals
are free of dust and dirt
• The battery must always be charged outside hazardous locations
• Inside hazardous locations, only approved accessories connected to the top
connector must be used
• The plug interface bottom connector must not be used in hazardous locations
• The radio must not be taken into zones 0 or 20
• Any modifications on the housing are prohibited, e.g.:
• Engraving
• Affixing label(s)
• Usage of sharp or pointed objects / tools with or on the radio and the battery
are prohibited
• Removing the battery with tools or by rough force is prohibited
The additional regulations for dust-hazardous locations must be observed:
• If there is no approved accessory connected to the top connector, the interface
must be covered with the SCL cover before entering dust-hazardous locations

• The battery must not be replaced inside dust-hazardous locations
• An additional or spare battery must not be carried in dust-hazardous locations
Accessories are not covered by the certificate and must have their own ATEX/
IEC-Ex certificate!
Accessories i.e. battery chargers that are connected to the THR9 Ex must only be
connected to a supply circuit that has a maximum prospective short circuit current
of 35 A a.c. or less.
The value Um = 60V (also 35A for current) is valid for all connections of the device
outside the hazardous area.
For connections outside the hazardous areas, the standards EN 60079-14,
item 12.2.1 or IEC 60079-14, Edition 5.0, item 16.2.1 must be observed when
installing/connecting the device:
• Establish the connection in a PELV (Protective Extra Low Voltage) or SELV
(Safety Extra Low Voltage)
• Use an isolating transformer according to the requirements of IEC 61558-2-6,
or a technically equivalent standard
• Establish a direct connection to a device according to the IEC 60950 series,
IEC 61010-1, or a technically equivalent standard
• Establish direct cell or battery supply
To obtain safety and guarantee the THR9 Ex, the device is only permitted to be
operated with appropriate Airbus accessories and to be charged in the safe area
using the special appropriate Airbus chargers.

Because of different approvals worldwide, the batteries have to be marked with
different ex-designations. The additional letters behind the type designation of the
battery may show the approval designation. To reorder the correct battery, refer
to the following table.

8 MOUNTING THE SAFETY COVER
In dust-hazardous areas, screw the SCL safety cover on the top connector when
no accessory is being used.
2) Turn the bail counter-clockwise (1),
lift the battery upwards (2) and take
the battery from the terminal.
3) Place the battery nail in its pre-built
position, arrow marks on locking button
and battery body aligned (as shown by
detail in Figure 3)
• Put the battery into its slot so that the
catches in the upper part of the battery
fit into the holes in the radio body.
• Put the battery down and turn the bail
clockwise until it locks.

9REPAIR
The radio must be repaired by ecom instruments GmbH or by the personnel
or service centres authorised by
ecom instruments GmbH . This is because
the safety of the radio must be tested after the repair has been performed.
10 CLEANING, MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE
• Use only a suitable cloth or sponge to clean the radio. Do not use any solvents
or abrasive cleaning agents when cleaning
• It is recommended that you have the functionality and accuracy of the radio
inspected by the manufacturer every two years
• The battery should be removed from the radio during prolonged periods
of storage
• For the radio with a battery or for the battery alone, do not exceed the
permissible storage temperature range of 0 °C to +35 °C
• In case of long battery storage period (more than 6 months), it is necessary
to charge the battery before usage. Performing several charge / Discharge
cycles recovers the optimized battery capacity
• Too long battery storage period can cause irremediably loss of battery
capacity
• Do not remove a cell or battery from its original packaging until required for use
• Do not expose cells or batteries to heat or fire. Avoid storage in direct sunlight
• In the event of a cell leaking, do not allow the liquid to come into contact with
skin or eyes. In case of a skin/eye contact, wash the affected area with copious
amounts of water and seek medical advice
• Retain the original cell and battery literature for future reference
• When disposing of secondary cells or batteries, keep cells or batteries of
different electrochemical systems separate from each other

11 DECLARATION OF CONFORMITY
EC-TYPE EXAMINATION CERTIFICATE
The original EC-Type Examination Certificate in English has been granted
to ecom instruments GmbH by Bureau Veritas Consumer Product Services
Germany GmbH Türkheim in Germany.
R&TTE REQUIREMENT
THR9Ex respects European directive 1999/5/EC.
Test for SAR is conducted using standard operating positions with the handset
transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands.
The highest SAR values for this model handsets when tested for use at the ear
or close to body are:
• 0.863 W/kg for radio type RC-49 on the frequency band 380-430MHz
• 1.180 W/kg for radio type RC-50 on the frequency band 450-470MHz
• 0.786 W/kg for radio type RC-51 on the frequency band 330-360MHz
