Water and moisture –Do not use this unit near water, such as
near abathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in awet
basement, swimming pool, or the like.
Heat –Do not use this unit near sources of heat, including
heating vents, stoves, or other appliances that generate heat.
It also should not be placed in temperatures less than 5-C
(41 “F) or greater than 35-C (95-F).
Mounting surface –Place the unit on a flat, even surface.
Ventilation –The unit should be situated with adequate space
around it so that proper heat ventilation is assured. Allow 10 cm
(4 in,) clearance from the rear and the top of the unit, and 5 cm
(2 in.) from the each side.
-Do not place the unit on a bed, rug, orsimilarsurface that may
block the ventilation openings.
-Do not install the unit in abookcase, cabinet, or airtight rack
where ventilation may be impeded.
Objects and liquid entry –Take care that objects or liquids do
not get inside the unit through the ventilation openings.
Carts and stands –When placed or
mounted on a stand or cart, the unit
should be moved with care.
Quick stops, excessive force, and un-

Condensation –Moisture may form on the CD pickup lens
when:
-The unit is moved from acold spot to awarm spot
-The heating system has just been turned on
-The unit is used in avety humid room
-The unit is cooled by an air conditioner
When this unit has condensation inside, it may not function
normally. Should this occur, leave the unit forafew hours, then
try to operate again.
Wall or ceiling mounting–The unit should not be mounted on
awall or ceiling, unless specified in the Operating Instructions.

Power sources –Use on batteries or AC house current, as
specified in the Operating Instructions and marked on the unit.
Polarization –As asafety feature, some units are equipped
with polarized AC power plugs which can only be inserted one
way into apower outlet, If it is difficult orimpossibleto insert the
AC power plug into an outlet, turn the plug over and try again.
If it still does not easily insert into the outlet, please call a
qualified service technician to service or replace the outlet. To
avoid defeating the safety feature of the polarized plug, do not
force it into apower outlet.
AC power cord
-When disconnecting the AC power cord, pull it out by the AC
power plug. Do not pull the cord itself.
-Never handle the AC power plug with wet hands, as this could
result in fire or shock.
-Power cords should be routed to avoid being severely bent,
pinched, or walked upon. Pay particular attention to the cord
from the unit to the power socket.
-Avoid overloading AC power plugs and extension cords
bevond their ca~acitv. as this could result in fire or shock.
Extension cord ~To ~elp prevent electric shock, do not use a
polarized AC power plug with an extension cord, receptacle, or
other outlet unless the polarized plug can be completely in-
serted to prevent exposure of the blades of the plug.
When not in use –Unplug the AC power cord from the AC
outlet or remove all the batteries if the unit will not be used for
several months or more. When the cord is plugged in, asmall
amount of current continues to flow to the unit, even when the
power is turned off.

Maintenance
Clean the unit only as recommended in the Operating Instructions.

Have the unit serviced by aqualified service technician if:
-The AC power cord or plug has been damaged
-Foreign objects or liquid have gotten inside the unit
-The unit has been exposed to rain or water
-The unit does not seem to operate normally
-The unit exhibits amarked change in performance
-The unit has been dropped, or the cabinet has been damaged

POWER SUPPLY CONNECTIONS
USING ON AC HOUSE CURRENT
Connect the AC cord as illustrated below.

CAUTION
Use only the supplied AC cord. Use with other cords may result
in the risk of fire.
USING ON BATTERIES
Open the lid of the battery compartment on the rear and insert
eight R20 (size D) batteries, not supplied, as illustrated below.
Then close the lid.

When disconnecting the AC cord or removing the batteries, be
sure to turn the unit off (make sure the OPE/BATT indicator is
off)
To switch from AC power supply to battery power supply,
disconnect the AC cord from the AC inlet.
Batteries wear excessively when the cord is connected.
The batteries need to be replaced when:
The OPE/BATT indicator becomes dim, the tape speed slows
down, volume decreases, or sound is distorted during operation.
Notes on batteries
To avoid damage from leakage or explosion, observe the
following:
●Insert the batteries with the 0 and Omarks correctly aligned.
-Do not mix different types of batteries or old batteries with new
ones.
●Never recharge the batteries, apply heat to them or take them
apart.
●Remove dead batteries.
If liquid leaks from the batteries, wipe thoroughly to remove.
IMPORTANT
●Make sure that the AC cord is disconnected and batteries are
removed before connecting speakers.

Position the speakers.
To couple with the speakers, slide each speaker down into
the guide brackets on the center unit until the height is level
with the unit.
To separate the unit from the speakers, slide the speakers
up and off, while pressing the speaker release knob.

Connect the speakers.
Connect the right speaker cord to the Rterminals, and the
left speaker cord to the Lterminals.
Connect the speaker cord with the white broken line to 0
and the other cord to O.

Sound signals can be input to this unit through the AUX/VIDEO
jacks.
Use acable with RCA phono plugs (not supplied) to connect the
external equipment.
Connect the red plug to the Rjack, and the white plug to the L
jack.
To listen to the external source
Press the AUX button and play the equipment.
Refer also to the operating instructions of the connected
equipment for details.

REMOTE CONTROL BEFORE OPERATION
Inserting batteries
Detach the battery cover on the rear of the remote control and
insert two R6 (size AA) batteries,

When to replace the batteries
The maximum operational distance between the remote control
and the sensor on the main unit should be approximately 5meters
(16 feet). When this distance decreases, replace the batteries
with new ones.
To use the remote control
Some operations can be performed using the buttons on the
remote control only, or those on the main unit only, while others
can be performed using the buttons on the main unit as well as
on the remote control. This instructions manual clearly describes
the buttons available for each operation.

●If the unit is not going to be used for an extended period of
time, remove the batteries to prevent possible electrolyte
leakage.
●The remote control may not operate correctly when:
-The line of sight between the remote control and the unit is
exposed to intense light, such as direct sunlight.
-Other remote controls are used nearby (television, etc.)

To turn the unit on
Press one of the function buttons (CD, AUX, TUNER/BAND,
TAPE).
Playback of the inserted disc, or the previously tuned station is
received (Direct Play Function).
Note that playback of the inserted tape does not begin by pressing
the TAPE button.
The POWER button is also available.
To turn the unit off
Press the POWER button again.
To use the headphones
Connect headphones with astereo mini plug (03.5 mm, ‘/8 inch)
to the PHONES jack.
No sound is output from the speakers while the headphones are
plugged in.
To use the FUNCTION button
The FUNCTION button substitutes for the function buttons (CD,
AUX, TUNER/BAND, TAPE) on the main unit. Each time the
FUNCTION button is pressed while power is on, the next function
is selected cyclically.

When the TUNER/BAND button is pressed while the power is
off, the power is turned on and the previously tuned station is
received (Direct Play Function).
Press the 44 or Wbutton to select astation.
Each time the button is pressed, the frequency changes.
During FM stereo reception, STEREO is displayed.
To search for astation quickly (Auto Search)
Keep the ++ or -button pressed until the tuner starts
searching for astation. After tuning in to astation, the search
stops.
To stop the Auto Search manually, press the 4+ or -button.
●The Auto Search may not stop at stations with very weak signals.
For better reception
FM
Extend the rod antenna and orient it for the best reception.
AM
The antenna is inside the unit. Position the unit for the best
reception.
When an FM stereo broadcast contains noise
Press the TUNER MODE/OSC button on the main unit or the
MODE button on the remote control.
MONO appears on the display.
Noise is reduced, although reception is monaural.
To restore stereo reception, repeat the above again.
To change the AM tuning interval
The default setting of the AM tuning interval is 10 kHz/step. If
you use this unit in an area where the frequency allocation system
is 9kHzLstep, change the tuning interval.
Press the POWER button while pressing the TUNER/BAND
button.
To reset the interval, repeat this procedure.

When the AM tuning interval is changed, all preset stations (see
“PRESETTING STATIONS) are cleared. The preset stations
have to be set again.

The unit can store atotal of 24 preset stations for FM and AM.
However, up to 16 stations can be preset for each band.
1Press the TUNER/BAND button on the main unit
or the BAND button on the remote control to
select aband. Then, press the 4+ or >button
to select astation.

Astation is assigned apreset number, beginning from
consecutive order for each band. Preset number

Select the preset number of the station to be cleared. Then, press
the II button, and press the bbutton within 4seconds.
The preset numbers of all other stations in the band with higher
numbers are also decreased by one.

LOADING DISCS
The unit is equipped with three disc trays (tray 1, tray 2 and tray
3), so up to three CDs can be loaded at the same time.

Press one of the 4buttons corresponding to the
number of the tray to be opened.
CD function is selected as the source automatically, and the
specified CD tray opens.
Load adisc with the label side up and close the
disc tray by pressing the same button you
pressed at step 1.

Load other discs in the same manner.
The disc indicators show the current status of the disc trays.
When adisc is loaded and its information is shown in the display
window, the corresponding indicator lights in orange.
When adisc is loaded but its information is not shown in the
display window, the corresponding indicator lights in green.
When no disc is loaded, the corresponding indicator lights in
red.

Load discs.
To play all discs in the disc trays, press the* button
on the main unit or the *button on the remote
control.
Play begins with the disc on tray 1.
(If another disc is currently selected, i.e., whose disc indicator
lights in orange, play begins with that disc.)
To play one disc only, press the 1>, 2- or 3P
button corresponding to the disc to be played.
Play begins with the first track of the specified disc.

To search for aparticular point during playback, keep the
++ or >button pressed and release the button at the desired
point.
To skip to the beginning of atrack during playback, press
the +or -button repeatedly.
To remove the disc, press the ~button corresponding to the
disc to be removed.
Press the same button again to close the disc tray.
To start play when the power is off (Direct Play
Function)
Press the CD button. The power is turned on and play of the
loaded disc which was played last begins.
Selecting atrack with the remote control
You can start play of the desired track on the CD which is currently
selected, i.e., whose disc indicator lights in orange.
Press the numbered buttons and the +1 Obutton to select atrack.
Example:
To select the 25th track, press the +10, +1 Oand 5 buttons.
To select the 10th track, press the +1 Oand Obuttons.
The selected track starts to play and play continues to the end of
that disc.
To change the display in playback mode
Press the DISPLAY button on the remote control. With each
press of the button, the display changes in the following order.

●Do not use irregular shape CDs (example: heart-shaped,
octagonal ones). It may result in malfunction.
●When loading an 8-cm (3-inch) disc, put it onto the inner circle
of the tray.
●Do not place more than one compact disc on the disc tray.
●Do not use the unit in an inclined position.
●Remove all discs when carrying the unit.
●When the unit is turned on for the first time after it is connected
to an AC outlet, the tray 1is selected, regardless of your choice.

One track, one disc, or all the discs can be played repeatedly.
Press the REPEAT button on the remote control repeatedly
to display REPEAT ALL or REPEAT 1.
To repeat one disc or all the discs, display REPEAT ALL.
Then, to start repeat play of adesired disc, press the 1E, 2- or
3- button corresponding to the disc.
Or, to start repeat play of all the discs, press the -button on
the main unit or the -button on the remote control.
To repeat the current track only, display REPEAT 1.
To cancel repeat play, press the REPEAT button to turn off
REPEAT.
To repeat the desired tracks only, program the tracks (this page)
and press the REPEAT button to display REPEAT ALL.
RANDOM PLAY
All the tracks on the currently selected disc or all the discs can
be played randomly.
Press the MODE button on the remote control once in stop
mode.
To start random play of adesired disc, press the 1F, Z- or
3> button corresponding to the disc.
To start random play of all the discs, press the >button on
the main unit or the Pbutton on the remote control.
To cancel random play, press the MODE button repeatedly in
stop mode until the total playing time display is restored.

●Even if the -button is pressed, apreviously played track
cannot be skipped. The unit returns to the beginning of the
current track only.
oDuring random play, one-track repeat (REPEAT 1)cannot be
performed.

Up to 30 tracks can be programmed from any of the loaded discs.
Use the remote control.
In stop mode, press the MODE button repeatedly
until PRG flashes on the display.
Press the 1F, 2> or 3- button to select the
disc and wait for about 15 seconds.
Press the numbered buttons and the +10 button “——
to program atrack.
Example:
To select the 12th track, press the +1 Oand 2 buttons.
To select the 20th track, press the +1 O, +1 Oand Obuttons.

Clear the program and repeat all the steps again.

track number being programmed is 31 or above, the display shows

TAPE OPERATIONS
Deck 2
Tape playback in both decks can be performed in the same way.
●Use Type I(normal) tapes only.
●Tapes are played back on one side only.

Press the >button under the tape deck. The power is turned
on and play of the inserted tape begins.
CONTINUOUS PLAY
TO start play on deck 1after play on deck 2without interruption,
proceed as follows:
During play on deck 2, press the 11 button then the >button for
the deck 1.
When play on deck 2ends, the II button for the deck 1is released
automatically and play on deck 1starts.

About cassette tapes
●To prevent accidental erasure, break off the plastic tabs on
the cassette tape after recording with ascrewdriver or other
pointed tool.

To record on the tape again, cover the tab openings with
adhesive tape, etc.
●120-minuteor longer tapes are extremely thin and easily
deformed or damaged. They are not recommended.
●Take up any slack in the tape with apencil or similar tool
before use. Slack tape may break or jam in the mechanism.

ADJUSTING THE SOUND
ADJUSTING THE VOLUME
(--EQ
Press the VOLUME button. Press the upper part of the button
(UP) to increase the volume and the lower part (DOWN) to
decrease it.
When using the remote control, press the VOL ~/V button.
The volume level is shown on the display for 4seconds. It can be
set from O(minimum) to 29.
The volume remains memorized even after the power is turned
off. However, if the power is turned off when the volume is set to
more than 21, it is automatically set to 21 the next time the power
is turned on.
ENHANCING THE BASS SOUND
The T-BASS system enhances the realism of low-frequency
sound.
Press the T-BASS button.
EQ (EQUALIZER)
Press the ROCK/POP/JAZZ button.
Press the Amark on the button pointing at the desired EQ mode;
ROCK, POP or JAZZ.
The corresponding indicator lights in red.
ROCK: Powerful sound emphasizing treble and bass
POP: More presence in the vocals and midrange
JAZZ: Accented lower frequencies for jazz-type music
To cancel the selected mode, repeat the above so that the
indicator goes off.
When using the remote control
Press the EC) button repeatedly until the desired EQ mode is
selected.
The EQ mode changes to ROCK, POP, JAZZ or no equalization
cyclically.
QSURROUND SYSTEM
The QSURROUND system built into this unit uses only two
speakers at the left and right to create an atmosphere that sounds
as if you are surrounded by two front speakers and two rear
speakers.
Press the QSURROUND button.
To cancel, press the button again.

The QSURROUND system does not work in monaural mode.
To cancel, press the button again.

Low frequency sound may be distorted when the T-BASS system
is used for adisc or tape in which Iowfrequency sound is originally
emphasized. In this case, cancel the T-BASS system.

1Insert the tape to be recorded on into deck 1.
Insert the tape with the side to be recorded on facing toward

2Press one of the FUNCTION buttons and prepare
the source to be recorded.
To record from the CD, press the CD button and load the
disc.
If two or three CDs are loaded, start play of the CD to be
recorded and stop play so that this CD is selected.
To record from the radio, press the TUNER/BAND button
and tune in to astation.
3Press the ●button to start recording.
The -button is pressed simultaneously.
When the selected source is CD, playback and recording start
simultaneously.
When the tape reaches its end, recording stops.
When the selected source is CD, the CD enters the playback
pause mode.

If squealing or beating sounds occur when recording an AM
broadcast, press the TUNER MODE/OSC button, so as to
eliminate the noise.
Each time the button is pressed, the indicator on the display is
turned on and off.
The MODE button on the remote control is also available.

You can record the sound from an external equipment connected
to the AUX/VIDEO jacks.

Sound adjustment during recording
The output volume and tone of the speakers or headphones may
be freely varied without affecting the level of the recording.

resume recording, press again.

Turn on HI-DUB to dub at high speed.
Turn off HI-DUB to dub at normal speed.

To stop recording, press the N/A button for the deck 1.

This is caused by apower interruption. The current time needs
to be reset.
If power is interrupted for more than approximately 12 hours, all
settings stored in memory after purchase need to be reset.

SETTING THE TIMER

The unit can be turned on at aspecified time every day with the
built-in timer.
Set the timer as follows while the power is on.

Prepare the source.
To listen to aCD, press the CD button and load the disc.
To listen to the radio, press the TUNER/BAND button and
tune in to astation.
To listen to atape, press the TAPE button, insert atape into
deck 1or 2, and press the Fbutton for the corresponding
deck to start play.
To listen to the equipment connected to the AUX/VIDEO
jacks, press the AUX button and set the timer of the connected
equipment (with an external timer) and prepare for the play.
Adjust the volume and press the POWER button
to turn the unit off.
@remains on the display after the power is turned off (timer
standby mode).
When the timer-on time is reached, the unit turns on and
begins play with the selected source.
The volume level is automatically set to 21 when the power is
turned off with the volume level set to 22 or higher.
For timer recording: Press the ●button for the
deck 1.
The >button is pressed simultaneously.
To check the specified time
Press the TIMER button. The timer-on time and the duration for
the timer-activated period flash for 4seconds.
To cancel timer standby mode temporarily
Press the TIMER button twice to turn off 0.
Using the unit while the timer is set
You can use the unit normally after setting the timer.
Before turning off the power, repeat step 4to prepare the source,
and adjust the volume.

●Connected equipment cannot be turned on and off by the built-
in timer of this unit. Use an external timer.

SETTING THE SLEEP TIMER MICROPHONE MIXING
The unit can be turned off automatically at aspecified time.

to specify the time until the power is turned off.
Each time the button is pressed, the time changes between 5
to 240 minutes in 5-minute steps.

To check the time remaining until the power is turned
off
Press the SLEEP button once. The remaining time is displayed
for 4seconds.
To cancel the sleep timer
Press the SLEEP button twice to turn off SLEEP on the display.
*If you press the SLEEP button while the power is off, the power
is turned on and the sleep timer starts to work so that the unit
will be turned off after 60 minutes.
To specify the timer until the power is turned off, press the
SLEEP button once again then press the <or +button
within 4seconds.
@If the unit is turned off during tape playback, the -button for
the tape decks will not be released. Press the ¤/~ button to
release the 0button.

●If amicrophone is placed too close to the speaker, ahowling
sound (feedback) may be produced. If this happens, move the
microphone away from the speaker or decrease the main
volume.
●The use of aunidirectional type microphone is recommended
to prevent howling.
●Set the dubbing speed to normal. The microphone mixing sound
will not be recorded if high speed dubbing is selected.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Occasional care and maintenance of the unit and the software
are needed to optimize the performance of your unit.
To clean the cabinet
Use asoft and dry cloth.
If the surfaces are extremely dirty, use asoft cloth lightly
moistened with mild detergent solution. Do not use strong
solvents, such as alcohol, benzine or thinner as these could
damage the finish of the unit.
To clean the heads
When the tape heads are dirty;
–high frequency sound is not emitted.
–the sound is not adequately high
–the sound if off-balance
–the tape cannot be erased
–the tape cannot be recorded on
After every 10 hours of use, clean the tape heads with a
commercially available head cleaning cassette.
Refer to the instructions of the cleaning cassette for details.
Care of CDs
●When adisc becomes dirty, wipe the disc from the center out
with acleaning cloth.
●After playing adisc, store the disc in its case. Do not leave the
disc in places that are hot or humid.
Care of tapes
●Store tapes in their cases after use.
●Do not leave tapes near magnets, motors, television sets, or
any source of magnetism. This will downgrade the sound quality
and cause noise.
●Do not expose tapes to direct sunlight, or leave them in acar
parked in direct sunlight.

There is no sound.
.Is the AC cord connected properly?
●Was an incorrect function button pressed?
Power is not turned on
●Isthe AC cord connected to the unit with old batteries inserted?
+Remove all the batteries and disconnect the AC cord. Then,
connect the AC cord again and reset the unit as stated below.
An erroneous display or amalfunction occurs.

If an unusual condition occurs in the display window or the
cassette decks, reset the unit as follows.
1Press the POWER button to turn off the power.

ALIIVIENTACION ELECTRICA CONEXIONES
UTILIZATION DE LA CORRIENTE CA DEL
HOGAR
Conecte el cable electrico de CA tal como en la siguiente
figura.

PRECAUTION
Utilice solo el cable electrico de CA suministrado. El uso de otros
cables puede provocar un incendio.
UTILIZATION DE BATERIAS
Abra la tapa de compartimiento de baterias en el Iado trasero y
coloque echo baterias R20 (tamafio D), no suministradas, como
en la siguiente figura. Cierre la tapa.
Cuando desconecte ei cable de CA oextraiga Ias pilas,
desconecte la alimentacion de la unidad (cerciorse de que el
indicador OPE/BATT este apagado).
Para cambiar de la alimentacion electrica de CA ala
alimentacion de Ias baterias, desconecte el cable electrico de
CA del tomacorriente de CA.
Las baterias se desgastan excesivamente cuando el cable esta
conectado.
Debera cambiar Ias baterias cuando:
El indicador OPE/BAT se vuelve oscuro, baja la velocidad de la
cinta, baja el volumen oel sonido se escucha distorsionado
durante su funcionamiento.
Notas sobre Ias baterias
Para evitar datios por fugas oexplosion, tenga en cuenta 10
siguiente:
oInserte Ias baterias con Ias marcas 0yOcorrectamente
alineadas.
oNo mezcle distintos tipos de baterias obaterias viejas con otras
nuevas.
●No recargue Ias baterias, caliente odesarme.
.Saque Ias baterfas agotadas.
Si sale el Iiquido de Ias baterfas, Iimpie completamente para
sacarlas.
IMPORTANTE
“Compruebe que el cable electrico de CA esta desenchufado y
que se han sacado Ias baterfas antes de conectar Ios altavoces.
cConecte solo Ios altavoces suministrados.

Instale 10s altavoces.
Para acoplar Ios altavoces, deslice cada altavoz por Ias
mensulas de guia en el centro de la unidad hasta que su
altura sea la misma que la del aparato.
Para separar el aparato de Ios altavoces, deslice Ios
altavoces hacia arriba para desmontar, mientras pulsa la
perilla de Iiberacion de altavoces.
Conecte 10s altavoces.
Conecte el cable de altavoz derecho aIos terminals R(der.)
yel cable de altavoz izquierdo aIos terminals L(izq.).
Conecte el cable de altavoz con la Iinea quebrada blanca en
el 0yel otro cable en el O.
Las sehales de sonido pueden entrar en este aparato por Ias
tomas AUX/Vl DEO.
Utilice un cable con enchufes fonograficos RCA (no suministrado)
para conectar el equipo externo.
Conecte el enchufe rojo en la toma R(der.) yel enchufe blanco
en la toma L(izq.).
Para escuchar una fuente externa
Pulse el boton AUX yreproduzca el equipo.
