Warning
(FOR USE IN THE UNITED
KINGDOM)
This appliance is supplied with a fitted
three pin mains plug.
A3 amp fuse is fitted in the plug.
Should the fuse need to be replaced,
use a 3 amp fuse approved by ASTA
or BSI to BS 1362. When replacing the
fuse, you must ensure that any
removable fuse covers are correctly
refitted.
If you should lose the fuse cover,
please contact your nearest AIWA
dealer.
DO NOT CUT OFF THE PLUG
FROM THIS APPLIANCE
If the plug fitted is not suitable for the
power points in your home, or the
cable is too short to reach a power
point, obtain an appropriate safety
approved extension lead or adaptor. If
in any doubt please consult a qualified
electrician.
If the plug is cut off, remove the fuse
and dispose of the plug immediately.

OFF PLUG IS INSERTED INTO A NY
13 AMP SOCKET.
If a new plug is to be fitted please
ensure it contains a 3 amp fuse,
otherwise the circuit should be
protected by a 5 amp fuse at the
distribution board.
IMPORTANT
The wires in the mains lead are
coloured in accordance with the
following code:
BLUE — NEUTRAL
BROWN — LIVE
As the colours of the wires in the
mains lead of this appliance may not
correspond with the colour markings
identifying the terminals in your plug,
proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured BLUE must
be connected to the terminal which is
marked by the letter N or coloured
BLACK.
The wire which is coloured BROWN
must be connected to the terminal
which is marked by the letter L or
coloured RED.
DO NOT connect either the BLUE or
BROWN wire of the mains lead to the
earth terminal (marked with the letter
E or by the earth symbol + or
coloured GREEN or GREEN/
YELLOW) of a three pin plug.

To reduce the risk of fire or electric
shock, do not expose this appliance
to rain or moisture.
Precautions
Important
* Use only [VAHS|-marked cassettes with
this unit.
¢ This unit is designed to receive and
record using the PAL colour system,
and playback using the PAL and
NTSC colour system.
e Audio/video material may consist of
copyrighted work which must not be
recorded without the authorization of
the owner of the copyright. Please
refer to the relevant laws in your
country.
Installing
¢ The unit should be situated with
adequate space around it so that
proper heat ventilation is assured.
Allow 10 cm clearance from the rear
and the top of the unit, and 5 cm
from the each side.
- Do not place the unit on a bed, rug,
or similar surface that may block
the ventilation openings.
- Do not install the unit in a
bookcase, cabinet, or airtight rack
where ventilation may be impeded.
¢ Keep the unit away from radiators
and other heat sources.
¢ Avoid using the unit near strong
magnetic fields.
¢ Use the unit in the horizontal position
only.
¢ Install the unit at least one meter
away from radios and receivers.
Otherwise, noise may occur during
radio reception.
* Do not place heavy objects on the
unit.
Cautions
¢ Do not open the cabinet of the unit.
¢ Do not push any kind of object into
the unit through the cabinet openings
as they could touch current carrying
parts, which may result in short-
circuit, fire, electric shock, or damage
to the unit.
¢ Do not spill liquid of any kind on this
unit. If any liquid is spilled over the
unit, immediately disconnect the unit
from the mains, and consult a
qualified service engineer.
* Do not put your hand into the tape
compartment.
¢ When the system is not used for an
extended period of time, disconnect
the AC cord. When the cord is
plugged in, a small amount of current
continues to flow to the system, even
when the power is turned off.
* When there is lightning, immediately
disconnect the unit from the mains
and never touch the aerial wire.
Note on moisture
condensation
Moisture may condense inside the unit
and cause damage to the unit and
tape when the unit is moved from a
cold to a warm place, after heating a
cold room, or under conditions of high
humidity. If any of above conditions is
applied, place the unit in a well-
ventilated area and wait for about two
hours before operating the unit, until
the unit is warmed to room
temperature and the moisture
evaporates completely.
Maintenance
Professional periodic maintenance is
required to keep the optimum
performance of the unit. Maintenance
and adjusiments to internal
components should not be done by
the user. Please consult your dealer if
you have any trouble with the unit.
Cleaning the unit
Wipe the cabinet clean using a damp
soft cloth with diluted detergent. Never
use thinner or benzine since they will
damage the cabinet surface.
Cleaning the video heads
Although the unit cleans the video
heads automatically, dirt may be
accumulated after a long period of
use. If the playback picture is blurred
or noisy while the TV programmes are
received clearly, the video heads may
be dirty. In this case, clean the video
heads using a commercially available
video heads cleaning tape.

a record of the Security “Fi IN”
code in a safe place, in case
you forget it.
* If your Video Recorder needs
to be serviced, please ensure
that the Security feature is
turned OFF, otherwise the
repairer will be unable to
service the unit.

Security Protection
You can limit the number of users if
you enter your name, post code, and
PIN code into this VCR. The VCR
doesn't work if PIN code is entered

PREPARATION
Connecting the VCR

1 Disconnect the aerial cable from your TV and connect it to
AERIAL on this VCR.

2 Connect the supplied aerial cable to RF OUT on the VCR and
the aerial connector on your TV.
3° Connect AC inlet of the VCR and the mains with the
supplied mains lead.
To listen to a stereo recorded tape or TV programme
Connect the VCR to a stereo TV with an optional 21-pin scart cable, or
stereo system with the supplied audio cable, as shown in “Additional
connections” below. The sound from the VCR's aerial output is monaural.
To connect to the TV with a 21-pin scart connector
This connection improves the picture and sound quality.
Connect the VCR and the TV with an optional 21-pin scart cable.
When you watch VCR pictures, set the TV to the video input mode.

To connect a satellite receiver or cable box with a
21-pin scart connector
Connect the VCR and the satellite receiver or cable box with an optional
21-pin scart cable.
Set CATV/SAT to AV2 in the SYSTEM menu (see page 33) after you tune
your TV to the VCR (page 7).

If your satellite receiver or cable box has more than two scart connectors, use the
VIDEO output to connect to the VCR and not the VCR output. Otherwise you may not
receive a proper picture.
To connect to a stereo system
This connection improves the sound quality.
Connect AUDIO OUT on the VCR to the audio input jacks on the stereo
system with the supplied audio cable.

Preparing the remote control
Insert the two supplied R6 (size AA) batteries.
Be sure to match @ and © on the batteries to the diagram inside the
battery holder.
* Do not mix a new battery with an old one.
¢ Do not mix different kinds of batteries.
¢ Remove the batteries when they have no more power, or when you do not use the
remote contro! for a long period of time.

The remote control may not operate when there is any obstruction betweenthe
remote control and REMOTE SENSOR.
Strong ambient light sources such as a fluorescent lamp or direct sunlight nay
cause unreliable operation.
Using a TV with the same type of infrared remote control facing the same drection
may cause incorrect operation.
The maximum distance for effective control between the remote control and
REMOTE SENSOR is 7 metres.
Although you can use the remote conirol within an angle of up to 30 degrees in any
direction from directly in front of REMOTE SENSOR, we recommend a nary wer
angle for stable operation.

Tuning your TV to the VCR
If you have connected the VCR to the TV with a 21-pin scart cable, this
procedure is not necessary.

CHANNEL A/V
Set RF CH SET on the rear panel to ON.
Press CHANNEL A/V repeatedly until the TV channel you
want to use for VCR playback appears in the display
window.
You can select a channel between 21 and 69.
Tune the TV so that the aiwa blue screen appears on the TV
screen.
Refer to the TV operating instructions for tuning.
Now the selected channel is set to the channel for VCR playback.
Whenever you want to play back a tape, set the TV to this channel.
If there is still interference on the screen, connect the VCR to the TV
with a 21 pin cable. In this case, press CHANNEL A/V repeatedly until
“RF ——” appears in the display window instead of step 3.
5 Set RF CH SET to OFF.

Setting up the VCR — Auto Set-Up

Even if the power supply is interrupted,
the VCR will automatically receive the
preset channels and set the clock
when the power is restored once you
have completed Auto Set-Up.
This function does not operate if the
TV station is not broadcasting when
the power is restored.
The VCR will automatically correct the
clock four times a day (three, seven,
twelve, and eighteen hours) once you
have completed Auto Set-Up.
The VCR will automatically adjust the
clock for Daylight Saving once you
completed Auto Set-Up.
If the VCR is not connected to a cable
TV or satellite receiver with the aerial
cable, no TV station will be assigned to
CH6.
Once you conduct Auto Set-Up, the
previous settings will be cancelled.
This convenient Auto Set-Up function can preset the clock and channels for
the VCR at the same time by pressing a single button.
Before starting
e If the VCR is connected to a cable TV or satellite receiver with the aerial
cable, make sure to turn them on and set them to SKY NEWS.

Press POWER to turn on the VCR.
Turn on the TV and set it for VCR reception.
¢ When the VCR and the TV are connected with a 21-pin scart cable,
set the TV to the video input mode.
¢ When they are connected with only the aerial cable, set the TV to the
VCR channel.
Press and hold AUTO SET on the remote control for a few
seconds.
“AUTO SET’ will appear in the display
window, and a scan bar will appear on
the TV screen.

Auto Set-Up
Check the aerial connections and repeat the above procedure from step 3.
If you still cannot receive the channels, set the TV channels manually. See
page 31.
(Presetting the TV channels is necessary for recording TV programmes.)
If “SET TIME” appears in the display window after
Auto Set-Up
Set the clock manually. See page 30.
(Setting the clock correctly is necessary for timer recording.)
If the assignment of the TV stations is not correct
Weak broadcast signals may have been preset to 7CH or higher. Reassign
the channel number manually.
1 Press CHANNEL A/V to select the TV station you want to reassign.
2 Press CH NO. SET.
The CH NO. SET menu appears.
3 Press +/— to select the correct channel
number.
If you assign a channel number which has
already been assigned to another TV station, the
channel numbers for those two stations will be
exchanged.
4 Press OK.
To erase a channel
1 Press CHANNEL A/V to select the channel number you erase,
2 Press CH NO. SET.
The CH NO. SET menu appears.
3 Press CLEAR to erase.
Press OK.

Setting the Security Protect
This Security Protect function limits the number of users. To set the Security
Protect function, register your name, your post code, and the PIN code into
this VCR, then set the Security Protect to lock the VCR.
Before starting
¢ Turn on the VCR and the TV and set the TV for VCR reception.
— When the VCR and the TV are connected with a 21-pin scart cable, set the
TV to the video input mode.
~ When they are connected with only the aerial cable, set the TV to the VCR
channel.
