1. DESCRIPTION
1.1. The DAC3000C02
The DAC3000C02 module is a dual converter of AES/EBU digital audio to high quality
analog audio. It accepts sampling frequencies from 30 to 100kHz and provides a digital
input with loop-through for both coaxial cabling and twisted pair. An equalizer for each
digital stream compensates for cable runs of up to 150 meters. The analog outputs are
balanced and their output level is adjustable from 15 to 24dBm with respect to the
maximum amplitude of a digital signal.
The module provides program jumpers for manual selection of certain functions such as
de-emphasis selection and operation with the V bit. The 50/15us de-emphasis is
performed in the digital domain and functions with the standard sampling rates of 32,
44.1 and 48 samples/s in each digital stream. Operation with the validity bit permits
muting of the converter output when an erroneous stream is received or when the
validity bit is 1.
The front panel contains two LEDs to indicate the presence of errors, one for each
AES/EBU stream. The output level adjustment is performed with program jumpers in
1dB steps.
The generic term ''AES/EBU audio'' is known by other names depending upon the
standards body and the applications. Other names include S/PDIF, IEC-958, AES3, EBU
3250, etc, but all refer to encoded audio and the principal difference between them is
the way that additional information encoded in the status channel is used. The
DAC3000C02 is capable of converting any of these digital audio types into analog audio.
The DAC3000C02 is a TL3000 terminal line module and can be housed in a three rack
unit (3 RU) UR3000 mounting frame or a 1 RU UR3100 mounting frame.

3. INSTALLATION
THE DAC3000C02 MODULE CONTAINS ELECTRONIC DEVICES SENSITIVE TO
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE. Always use antistatic bags clearly identified
with a high degree of shielding for storage and transportation.
The DAC3000C02 module is composed of two parts: one DAC3000P03 main board and
one DAC3000P02 rear board. Both parts must be installed in a UR3000 or UR3100
mounting frame following the instructions in the corresponding section of this chapter.
3.1. Initial inspection
Verify that the package has been properly handled during transport. After opening the
packaging, check that one DAC3000P03 main board and one DAC3000P02 rear board are
inside.
You must notify your Albalá Ingenieros distributor or dealer of any damage or defects
observed.
Follow the instructions in this manual to install this module in the mounting frame.
3.2. Safety instructions
•This equipment must be connected to a mains outlet with a protective
earth connection. Never use extension cords that do not have protective
earthing connection. The lack of an effective electrical connection between
the ground pin in the mains input connector of the equipment and the
protective earth of the electrical power distribution can cause serious harm.
•All modules of the Albalá Ingenieros TL3000 terminal line can be
hot-plugged or unplugged without suffering any damage or affecting the
processes that are currently taking place in other modules in the same
mounting frame. When a module is installed in an empty bay of a mounting
frame, it is necessary to mount the rear board that is part of that module.
Prior to installing this board, the mounting frame must be disconnected
from the power supply network. This is required because in addition to the
risk of electrocution for the person handling the device it is possible that a
high instantaneous current coming from the power supply could damage
the connectors and components of the mounting frame and/or the rear
board.
11

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DAC3000C02
•The DAC3000C02 module and the mounting frame should always be
installed, maintained, operated and removed by personnel with sufficient
technical qualifications. The equipment should never be placed in damp
areas, near splashing liquid, or in explosive or corrosive atmospheres.
Neither modules nor mounting frames can be used in applications that
could endanger human life.
3.3. Environmental considerations
This symbol indicates that this equipment must be deposited at a collection
point for proper waste treatment once it has reached the end of its useful
life.
3.4. Power considerations
The UR3000 and UR3100 mounting frames can house as many DAC3000C02 modules as
will fit in them.
3.5. Module configuration
The DAC3000C02 module includes program jumpers that should be set before the unit
is installed into a mounting frame. These jumpers configure the following:
- The type of cabling used for the input connection.
- Selection of the equalization, based upon the length of the cabling.
- Operation of the mute function.
- Selection of the de-emphasis and the sampling rate.
The DAC3000C02 has inputs for two AES/EBU digital audio streams that are completely
independent from one another. Each stream has its own program jumpers that should
be set according to the needs of the system. The attached image shows the location of
the program jumpers and how to set them.
12

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DAC3000C02
3.5.1. Selection of coaxial or twisted pair cabling for the digital input
Selection of the connector to be used for the input streams is done via jumpers J7 and
J10 for STREAM 1 and with J15 and J19 for STREAM 2 as per the indications shown in
the silkscreening of the main board of the module.
3.5.2. Equalizer selection
Equalizer selection is set with jumpers J9 for STREAM 1 and J18 for STREAM 2. These
jumpers allow selection between two ranges of cable length. Position 0m should be
used for cable runs under 100 m whereas position 100m should be used for cable runs
between 100 and 200 m.
3.5.3. MUTE selection
The digital-to-analog converters include a mute control input that disables their
operation. If desired, the converter can be muted when the AES/EBU stream contains
information that is not audio or when the digital signal received has errors. The
DAC3000C02 uses the V bit of the AES/EBU stream to determine whether or not the
digital signal contains audio: V=0 when the signal is audio and V=1 when it is not.
Jumpers J6 and J16 govern this function for the two streams. When these jumpers are
set to the OFF position then automatic silencing of the converters is disabled.
13

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DAC3000C02
3.5.4. Selection of de-emphasis and sampling rate
The DAC3000C02 can perform a de-emphasis of 50/15us. This is done during the
digital filtering performed by the digital-to-analog converter and is therefore sensitive
to the sampling rate. J1, J3, J8 and J12 select the de-emphasis for sampling rates of 32,
44.1 and 48kHz. These same program jumpers also select the two ranges of
acceptable conversion rates: less than 50kHz and greater than 50kHz. For sampling
rates other than 32, 44.1 and 48kHz no de-emphasis is available.
Jumpers J1 and J3 are used to set the de-emphasis for STREAM 1 and jumpers J8 and
J12 set the de-emphasis for STREAM 2.
Even if de-emphasis is not being used, the jumpers J1, J3, J8 and J12 should be
configured for the range of sampling frequencies selected: greater than or less than
50kHz.
3.5.5. Output level adjustment
Use J5 and J2 to select the full-scale level of the L and R channels of STREAM 1.
Positions for 15dBu and 22dBu are shown in the silkscreening. The program jumpers
provide gain steps of 1dB, and the potentiometer located next to the program
jumpers provide a fine adjust of ±0.5dB.
Use J13 and J14 to select the full-scale level of the L and R channels of STREAM 2.
Positions for 15dBu and 22dBu are shown in the silkscreening. The program jumpers
provide gain steps of 1dB, and the potentiometer located next to the program
jumpers provide a fine adjust of ±0.5dB.
The DAC3000C02 comes from the factory with the following settings:
- Signal input using two-wire shielded cabling.
- Equalization for cable runs between zero and 100 meters.
- Without de-emphasis.
- Sampling frequencies below 50kHz.
- The MUTE function disabled.

mounting frame.
7 - Affix the main board to the mounting frame using the two screws included on the
front panel.
After these steps, the module is ready to be connected to other equipment.
3.7. Interconnection
The following figure shows the DAC3000C02 module rear board connector layout.
Rear view of the DAC3000C02
The DAC3000C02 module provides two digital audio inputs via BNC (STREAM 1 IN and
STREAM 2 IN), two digital audio inputs via two-wire shielded cable (STREAM 1 LOOP IN
and STREAM 2 LOOP IN) and four analog audio outputs (OUTA (L) & OUTB (R) for STREAM
1 and OUTA (L) & OUTB (R) for STREAM 2).
The rear interconnection board is not designed to withstand mechanical stress. The
wiring must be fastened properly to the frame where the mounting frame is housed to
16

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DAC3000C02
prevent the rear board from supporting the weight of the cables.
3.7.1. Digital audio connections
The digital audio inputs via 3.81mm pitch terminal block connectors are balanced,
whereas the digital audio inputs via BNC are unbalanced. Both inputs provide
loop-through.
When connecting to the digital audio inputs using the terminal block connectors, the
preferred cable type is two-wire shielded with 110Ω of characteristic impedance. The
GND terminal allows grounding of the cable's shielding.
When connecting to the the BNC digital audio inputs the cabling used should be
coaxial with 75Ω of characteristic impedance.
3.7.2. Analog audio connections
The analog audio outputs are balanced, use 3.81mm pitch terminal block connectors
and their characteristic impedance is 73Ω.
For analog audio connections two-wire shielded cable is preferred. The GND terminal
allows connection of the cable shield.

4. OPERATION
This section describes the significance of the front panel indicators of the DAC3000C02
module and their remote control and monitoring ability.
4.1. Front panel description
The appearance of the front panel and the elements it contains are shown in the
following illustration.
Front panel of the DAC3000C02
The panel contains the following elements:
19

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DAC3000C02
In the AES/EBU STREAM 1 and AES/EBU STREAM 2 boxes.
FAIL: Red. This LED lights up during the following situations:
- The parity bit of the AES/EBU streams indicates a failure because the
signal contains errors.
- The biphase mark code of the stream has errors due to an encoding error
in the signal source.
- With professional grade signal, the CRC (cyclical redundancy code) of the
AES/EBU status channel is incorrect due to errors in the input signal.
- Excessive jitter makes it impossible for the clock regerenator to sync.
- No input signal is present.
4.2. Functional description
The DAC3000C02 distributor can accept AES/EBU signals sampled at frequencies
between 30,000 and 100,000 samples per second. The front panel LED FAIL remains off
as long as the signal received is valid and contains no errors.
The converter includes a program jumper for each output channel that can silence that
channel when the converter receives as signal that is not valid for conversion. As long as
the MUTE function is not activated the converter will output the digital information
present in the corresponding AES/EBU stream. The DAC3000C02 does not output any
signal for channels where the MUTE function is activated while:
- The front panel LED is lit due to a failure in the signal.
-The validity bit, V, of the AES/EBU signal is set to 1, indicating that the data present in
the stream is not valid for digital-to-analog conversion. In this situation the
corresponding channel is silenced and the FAIL LED remains off since the signal is
correct.
The DAC3000C02 converter includes internal selection that allows it to operate with
sampling rates below or above 50kHz. This selection is performed automatically.
4.3. Module remote control and supervision
The DAC3000C02 CANNOT be remotely controlled or supervised.
