1. DESCRIPTION
1.1. The EOP0002C01
The EOP0002C01 is a quad digital video signal converter for optical-to-electrical format
conversion and vice versa.
The EOP0002C01 operates with 270Mbit/s (SD-SDI and DVB-ASI), 1.5Gbit/s (HD-SDI)
and 3Gbit/s (3G-SDI) signals.
The EOP0002C01 consists of two sections, each of which has a cage for insertion of an
optical SFP module that can function as a dual transmitter or dual receiver. Each of the
two sections provides two BNC connectors that can function either as inputs or outputs,
depending upon how each section will be used.
If the SFP module inserted into one of the sections is a dual optical transmitter then the
BNC connectors are configured as inputs. If the SFP module inserted into one of the
sections is a dual receiver, then the BNC connectors are configured as outputs.
If no SFP module is inserted into Section B then its two BNC connectors are configured as
outputs that distribute the same signals present on the corresponding BNC connectors
of Section A.
The signal received is always re-synchronized for delivery to the outputs.
The SFP modules are sold separately and also function as dual transmitters or receivers.
Albalá Ingenieros sells the MSFPTP01 transmitter and the MSFPRP01 receiver, both of
which are 100% compatible with the EOP0002C01.
The EOP0002C01 has been designed to operate independently and hence does not
require installation in a rack. The unit features robust aluminum construction and
supports a wide range of operating temperatures.
The EOP0002C01 is powered by an external wall adapter supplied with the equipment.
The power supply connection has a security system that attaches the power cable to the
equipment case with a threaded connector, avoiding any mechanical stress on the cable
due to accidental disconnection.
The CrossConnect family from Albalá Ingenieros is a set of products for all kinds of signal
processing and distribution characterized by portability, mechanical robustness and low
power consumption. These properties make it perfectly suited to field deployment
needs, however the use of highly reliable components also make the CrossConnect

3.6. Interconnection
The EOP0002C01 includes the following types of connections:
- Power supply.
- Electrical SDI video.
- Optical SDI video.
3.6.1. Power supply connection
The equipment is supplied with a suitable wall power supply. This power supply can
provide power to a single EOP0002C01. It is possible to connect several devices to the
same power supply as long as it is able to supply the necessary current. Read the
following information carefully before connecting the EOP0002C01 to a power supply
other than the one delivered with the equipment.
The EOP0002C01 power supply is connected via a 2.5mm jack and the voltage must
be between 5 and 15 VDC. The equipment contains an internal switched mode
regulator that allows this wide range of input voltages without reducing energy
efficiency. Power consumption depends on the voltage supplied.
The power supply's negative terminal is connected to the outer ring of the connector
and the metal case of the equipment, while the positive terminal is the connector's
center pole.
If the EOP0002C01 is powered by DC voltage from a vehicle, protection is required for
the common transients (cold crank, load dump, etc) as the equipment has no internal
protections for these events.
3.6.2. Electrical SDI video connections
The connectors labeled SDI-1,SDI-2,SDI-3 and SDI-4 are bi-directional and can operate
as inputs or outputs depending upon the SFP modules installed. SDI-1 and SDI-2
correspond to Section A and SDI-3 and SDI-4 correspond to Section B.
All electrical SDI video connections are BNC type. The following suggestions should be
kept in mind when wiring the electrical signals.
BNC connectors used on cables must be suitable for the high frequencies of digital
video signals: it is strongly recommended to use high quality connectors from well
known manufacturers.
All coaxial cable used must be Belden 1694A or similar. This type provides the greatest
lengths because it is used to calculate the equalizers in the EOP0002C01. Cables
carrying signal between the module and the devices should use single piece
construction, avoiding spliced sections with double BNC female or barrel connectors.
If it is necessary to split the cable into two sections the same type of wire should be
16

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual EOP0002C01
used in both sections.
The use of analog video coaxial cables RG-59 type or similar is not recommended for
digital video except for very short distances.
3.6.3. Optical SDI video connections
The inputs or outputs of the SFP module are labeled on the overlay with arrows over
the SFP MODULE tag. It is important to note that the arrangement of the connectors
corresponding to each section is crossed over between the input and the output to
facilitate interconnection
The SFP fiber optic module must be inserted into its housing as described previously
before interconnection.
Optical connections are performed in the SFP module, which is equipped with LC/PC
connectors. Connectors using single-mode fiber optics are usually blue. Connectors
for multimode fiber optics are usually gray.
Singlemode fiber must be used in fiber optic cabling. However, for standard definition
and short lengths multimode fiber can be employed. Before connecting any fiber
optics, the cap that protects the connectors must be removed. Unused fiber optic
connectors should always be covered by the protective cap.
All fiber optic cables have a minimum curvature radius that must be obeyed (consult
the specification of the cabling used) and should be run with enough strain relief to
absorb small, unintended pulling or mechanical stress.
Fiber optic connections are sensitive to dust and dirt. Any dust or dirt particles trapped
in the optical pathway act as attenuators of unknown value and in the worst case can
render the signal unusable. Care must be taken to ensure the cleanliness of and not to
dirty the connectors during insertion and removal of the fiber optic cables.

4. OPERATION
This section describes the significance of the EOP0002C01's indicators and equipment
operation when a signal is applied.
4.1. Upper panel description
The appearance of the upper panel and the elements it contains are shown in the
following illustration.
Upper panel of the EOP0002C01
The upper panel of the EOP0002C01 displays the signal path for the two sections of the
unit. Section A is on top, Section B is on the bottom. Each section includes six indicator
LEDs and there are two more indicator LEDs common to both sections.
19

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual EOP0002C01
The function of each indicator LED is described as follows.
POWER ON: Green. The ON/OFF LED lights up when the EOP0002C01 is connected to
electrical power.
SDI-1,
SDI-2,
SDI-3,
SDI-4: Green. These LEDs light up when the re-clocking circuit locks to the signal
being received. When the section operates as an electrical-to-optical
converter, the signal received by the re-clocker is the same signal coming
from the automatic equalizer of the corresponding electrical input. When
the section operates as an optical-to-electrical converter, the signal received
by the re-clocker comes from the SFP receiver module. If Section A does not
have an SFP module installed then the signal fed to the re-clockers comes
from the equalizers. If Section B does not have an SFP module installed then
the signal fed to its re-clockers comes from the re-clocking circuits of Section
A.
TRANF.: Green. This LED lights up when the signal being received by the re-clockers
of Section B is provided by the Section A re-clockers because no SFP module
is installed in Section B.
Tx 1 2,
Tx 3 4: Green. These LEDs light up when their corresponding section operates as an
electrical-to-optical converter.
Rx 1 2,
Rx 3 4: Green. These LEDs light up when their corresponding section operates as an
optical-to-electrical converter.
LEVEL 1,
LEVEL 2,
LEVEL 3,
LEVEL 4: The color of these LEDs provides information about the signal being
received. When they are green, the signal level is adequate, when they are
yellow the signal level is low but still sufficient to guarantee proper
operation. When they are red the signal is either not being received or the
level is too low to guarantee proper operation.
4.2. Functional description
The EOP0002C01 is a quad 3G/HD/SD-SDI and DVB-ASI digital video signal converter for
optical-to-electrical conversion and vice versa.
The EOP0002C01 consists of two sections, each of which has a cage for insertion of an
optical SFP module that can function as a dual transmitter or dual receiver. Each of the
two sections provides two BNC connectors that can function ether as inputs or outputs,
depending upon how each section will be used.
