Intended Use
The AlcAlert Breath Alcohol Detector is a
screening test device for the rapid detection of
alcohol in the breath. The test is used to obtain
a visual quantitative result that approximates
the level of alcohol concentration in the blood
stream, and is intended for over the counter sale
to the home user.
WARNING/AGREEMENT
The AlcAlert™ Breath Alcohol Detector uses
advanced semi-conductor gas sensor technology
to approximate the percent of blood alcohol
concentration (%BAC) from your breath. Please
take a few moments to review the entire manual
before using the unit.
Before using the AlcAlert Breath
Alcohol Detector:
• When inserting batteries (not included with
all models), please note the correct polarity
on the inside of the battery case. Inserting
the batteries with the incorrect polarity may
damage the unit.
AlcAlert is a trademark of PNI Corporation.
• Do not blow smoke or uids into the
mouth vent, as this may damage the sensor.
Similarly, certain gases such as silicone
compounds, sulfur and freon gases can
also damage your sensor. Keep the unit
away from all liquids and store in a safe
environment.
• If the AlcAlert needs to be cleaned, wipe
gently with a soft cloth. Do not use any
cleaning agents.

• Allow 30 minutes after consuming alcohol
or smoking before using the unit. This helps
to ensure the breath sample is taken from
your lungs, and not from the alcohol within
your mouth, which may result in a higher
reading. In some cases, it may take up to one
hour to reach the highest blood alcohol level
after the last consumption of alcohol.
• Each individual’s body responds to the
consumption of alcohol differently.
Consequently, a person’s ability to drive
safely may be impaired at a point well below
the legal blood alcohol limit.

1. Press the “On” button. The unit beeps once,
the “WAIT” indicator ashes, and the unit
begins a “warm-up” countdown from 14-to-0
or 6-to-0 (see Additional Information). You
must wait until the countdown is complete.
Proceed with step 2 only when the unit beeps
twice and the “BLOW” indicator ashes.
Note: If “SAT” (saturation) ashes after the
countdown is completed and the unit turns off,
the sensor is saturated. Simply reactivate the
unit to perform another warm-up countdown
cycle. If “SAT” appears again, repeat this
process as many times as necessary until
“SAT” no longer appears. In most instances,
2 or 3 reactivation cycles should clear the
“SAT” message. More reactivation cycles may
be required if saturation is extensive (see
Additional Information).
2. Blow into the vent. Blow continuously for
about 5 seconds, until the unit beeps 3 times
before displaying the results. Immediately as
you start to blow, “Err” (Error) ashes until
the unit beeps 3 times. Blow from between
your lips, as if gently cooling a spoonful of
soup. A distance of about half an inch to
one inch between the vent and the mouth is
suggested. (See gure A.)
Note: If you do not apply any breath at all, or if
you stop blowing before you hear 3 beeps, the
LCD ashes “Err” to indicate that you did not
apply any or sufcient breath through the vent.
If so, ignore the results and repeat the process.
3. Read the results. The %BAC results are
displayed on the LCD display for about
5 seconds after the reading is taken. The
results then ash for a few seconds until the
unit turns off automatically.
The results are shown in increments of 0.01,
ranging from 0.00 to 0.12. Results greater that
0.12 %BAC are displayed as “+.12”.
Understanding the results
The BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration)
represents the amount of ethyl alcohol in a
given volume of blood. For instance, having a
%BAC of 0.10 means that a person has 1 part
alcohol per 1,000 parts blood in the body.
The most commonly used measurements are
grams of ethanol per millilitre of blood (g/ml),
used in the United States of America (also
expressed as %BAC) and milligrams of ethanol
per millilitre of blood (mg/ml), used in much of
Europe (also expressed as promille).
For example, a reading of 0.05 %BAC on the
AlcAlert Breath Alcohol Detector is the same
as 0.05 g/ml or 50 mg/ml or 0.5 g/l or 0.5
promille.

• The normal warm-up countdown is from
6-to-0. However, if it has been more than 1
hour since the last operation, the unit begins
a 14-to-0 warm-up countdown.
• The sensor must be warmed up properly to
report accurate readings. Therefore, always
disregard the results following the initial
14-to-0 warm-up countdown.
• The “SAT” (saturation) message feature
prevents the unit from displaying inaccurate
%BAC readings in the case of sensor
saturation by contaminating agents. For
example, saturation often occurs when
excessive alcohol moisture is deposited on
the sensor from multiple consecutive uses, or
by the accumulation of air contaminants on
the sensor after a long period of inoperability,
such as upon rst use. In such instances, the
unit requires additional warm-up cycles to
properly recondition the sensor.
• If the low battery indicator ashes then
remains on during use, replace the batteries.
• The AlcAlert Breath Alcohol Detector Model
BT5500 includes a backlight. The backlight
turns on and off automatically.
• Always blow into the unit in a consistent
manner. Different blowing conditions may
produce different results.
• Your unit is more accurate when your true
blood alcohol concentration is between 0.02
%BAC and 0.08 %BAC and less accurate
as your blood alcohol concentration is over
0.08 %BAC.
• The “SAT” message feature prevents the
unit from displaying inaccurate %BAC
readings in the case of sensor saturation
by contaminating agents. For example,
saturation often occurs when excessive
alcohol moisture is deposited on the sensor
from multiple consecutive uses, or by the
accumulation of air contaminants on the
sensor after a long period of inoperability,
such as upon rst use. In such instances, the
unit requires additional warm-up cycles to
properly recondition the sensor.

Der AlcAlert Atem-Alkoholtester ist ein

dient ausschließlich zum privaten Gebrauch des
Kunden.
WICHTIGER HINWEIS/VEREINBARUNG
Der AlcAlert™ Atem-Alkoholtester errechnet
die ungefähre Blutalkoholkonzentration mit
Hilfe von fortschrittlicher Halbleiter-Gassensor-
Technik aus Ihrer Atemluft. Bitte nehmen Sie
sich einen Augenblick Zeit, um sich mit Hilfe
dieser Bedienungsanleitung mit dem Gerät
vertraut zu machen.
Vor der ersten Nutzung:
• Bitte achten Sie beim Einlegen der Batterien
(nicht bei allen Modellen enthalten) auf
die korrekte Ausrichtung der Pole wie
im Batteriefach gezeigt. Falsch eingelegte
Batterien können zu Schäden am Gerät
führen.
• Bitte blasen Sie keinen Rauch und keine

Ebenso kann der Sensor durch bestimmte

• Zwischen dem letzten Alkoholgenuss und
dem Gebrauch des Geräts müssen
mindestens 30 Minuten liegen. Dadurch
ist gewährleistet, dass der Alkohol in der
Atemprobe aus Ihren Lungen stammt und
nicht aus dem Restalkohol in der Mundhöhle,
so dass überhöhte Ergebnisse vermieden
werden. In bestimmten Fällen kann es
bis zu einer Stunde nach dem letzten
Alkoholgenuss dauern, bis die höchste
Blutalkoholkonzentration erreicht ist.
• Der Körper jedes Menschen reagiert anders
auf den Genuss von Alkohol. Daher kann es
vorkommen, dass die Fähigkeit zum Führen
eines Fahrzeugs nicht mehr gegeben ist,
obwohl die Blutalkoholkonzentration noch
deutlich unter der gesetzlichen Höchstgrenze
liegt.

1. Drücken Sie die Einschalttaste. Das Gerät
gibt einen kurzen Signalton aus, und die
Warte-Anzeige („WAIT”) blinkt auf. Das
Gerät durchläuft einen Aufwärm-Countdown
von 14 oder 6 nach 0 (siehe „Weitere
Informationen”). Sie müssen warten, bis der
Countdown abgelaufen ist. Fahren Sie erst
dann mit Schritt 2 fort, wenn das Gerät
zwei kurze Signaltöne ausgibt und die Puste-
Anzeige „BLOW” aufblinkt.
Hinweis: Wenn nach dem Countdown die
Anzeige „SAT” für Sättigung aufblinkt und
sich das Gerät abschaltet, ist der Sensor
gesättigt. Reaktivieren Sie das Gerät, indem
Sie einen weiteren Countdown auslösen.
Erscheint abermals „SAT”, wiederholen Sie
diesen Vorgang so oft, bis „SAT” nicht mehr
angezeigt wird. Normalerweise genügen 2 bis
3 Reaktivierungszyklen, wenn die Meldung
„SAT” erscheint. Zusätzliche
Reaktivierungszyklen können bei besonders
hoher Sättigung erforderlich sein (siehe
„Weitere Informationen”).
2. Pusten Sie in die Messöffnung. Der
Luftstrom muss ca. 5 Sekunden lang
anhalten, bis das Gerät drei Signaltöne
ausgibt und das Ergebnis anzeigt.
Unmittelbar nach Beginn der
Atemluftmessung blinkt „Err” für „Fehler”
auf, bis die drei Signaltöne ausgegeben
werden. Pusten Sie langsam und anhaltend,
etwa so wie beim Abkühlen eines Löffels
Suppe. Halten Sie dabei einen guten
Zentimeter Abstand zur Messöffnung. (siehe
Abbildung A.)
Hinweis: Wenn Sie nicht in die Messöffnung
pusten oder den Vorgang vor den drei
Signaltönen abbrechen, erscheint im Display
„Err”, um anzuzeigen, dass die Messdaten
nicht ausreichen. In diesem Fall müssen Sie das
Ergebnis ignorieren und von vorne beginnen.
3. Lesen Sie das Ergebnis ab. Etwa fünf
Sekunden lang nach der Messung wird die
Blutalkoholkonzentration auf dem Display
angezeigt. Das Ergebnis blinkt dann einige
Sekunden auf, bevor sich das Gerät
automatisch abschaltet.
Das Ergebnis wird in Schritten von 0,01%
angezeigt und reicht von 0,00 bis 0,12 Prozent.
Ergebnisse über 0,12% (also über 1,2 Promille)
werden als „+.12” angezeigt.
Auswertung des Ergebnisses
Die BAK (Blutalkoholkonzentration) steht für
den prozentualen Alkoholgehalt im Blut. Bei
einer BAK von 0,10 zum Beispiel hat der
Proband 1 Promille Alkohol im Blut.
Die gebräuchlichsten Maßeinheiten sind Gramm
Ethanol (Alkohol) pro Milliliter Blut (g/ml),
wie in den USA üblich (auch ausgedrückt in
%BAK) und Milligramm Ethanol pro Liter Blut
(mg/l), auch als „Promille” bezeichnet, wie in
Europa vielfach üblich.
Ein vom AlcAlert Atem-Alkoholtester
ausgegebener Wert von 0,05 % BAK entspricht
also 0,05 g/ml oder 50 mg/ml oder 0,5 g/l oder
0,5 Promille. Um den üblichen Promillewert
herauszunden, versetzen Sie das Komma also
im angezeigten Wert um eine Stelle nach
rechts.

• Der normale Countdown beim Einschalten
des Geräts beginnt bei 6. Ist jedoch mehr als
eine Stunde seit dem letzten Messvorgang
vergangen, beginnt der Countdown bei 14.
• Der Sensor muss erst die erforderliche
Betriebswärme erreichen, bevor er eine
zuverlässige Messung durchführen kann.
Daher sollten Sie das erste Ergebnis nach
dem Countdown von 14 nach 0 stets außer
Acht lassen und eine erneute Messung
durchführen.
• Die Meldung „SAT” (Sättigung) verhindert
die Ausgabe falscher Messergebnisse
aufgrund einer Sättigung des Sensors durch
Schmutzstoffe. Eine Sättigung tritt zum
Beispiel häug ein, wenn sich nach mehreren
Messungen alkoholhaltige Flüssigkeit auf
dem Sensor angesammelt hat oder
Schmutzstoffe aus der Luft anliegen,
nachdem das Gerät längere Zeit nicht
eingesetzt wurde. In diesen Fällen benötigt
das Gerät mehrere Aufwärmzyklen, um den
Sensor zu konditionieren.
• Wenn die Batterieanzeige während des
Betriebs aufblinkt und nicht erlischt, müssen
die Batterien gewechselt werden.
• Der AlcAlert Atem-Alkoholtester BT 5500
ist mit einer Hintergrundbeleuchtung
ausgestattet. Die Hintergrundbeleuchtung
schaltet sich automatisch ein bzw. aus.
• Führen Sie stets einen gleichmäßigen
Luftstrom zu. Ein variierender Luftstrom
kann zu einer Verfälschung des
Messergebnisses führen.
• Das Gerät misst bei
Blutalkoholkonzentrationen zwischen 0,02%
BAK und 0,08 % BAK am genauesten. Bei
höheren BAK sinkt die Genauigkeit ab.
• Die Meldung „SAT” verhindert die Ausgabe
falscher Messergebnisse aufgrund einer
Sättigung des Sensors durch Schmutzstoffe.
Eine Sättigung tritt zum Beispiel häug
ein, wenn sich nach mehreren Messungen
alkoholhaltige Flüssigkeit auf dem Sensor
angesammelt hat oder Schmutzstoffe aus der
Luft anliegen, nachdem das Gerät längere
Zeit nicht eingesetzt wurde. In diesen Fällen
benötigt das Gerät mehrere Aufwärmzyklen,
um den Sensor zu konditionieren.
• Jeder Mensch reagiert anders auf den Genuss
von Alkohol. Daher kann es vorkommen,
dass die Fähigkeit zum Führen eines
Fahrzeugs nicht mehr gegeben ist, obwohl
die Blutalkoholkonzentration noch deutlich
unter der gesetzlichen Höchstgrenze liegt.
Der AlcAlert Atem-Alkoholtester darf nur dazu
verwendet werden, die Präsenz von Alkohol im
Blut grundsätzlich nachzuweisen. Er eignet sich
nicht als alleinige Basis für die Entscheidung,
ob eine Alkoholisierung vorliegt oder ob das
Führen eines Fahrzeugs oder von Maschinen
oder die Aufnahme gefährlicher Tätigkeiten
verantwortbar oder sicher ist.
PNI Corporation rät grundsätzlich von Alkohol
am Steuer ab. Wenn Sie vorhaben, Alkohol
zu sich zu nehmen, vereinbaren Sie mit Ihrem
Fahrer, dass er nüchtern bleibt, oder nutzen
Sie öffentliche Verkehrsmittel. Setzen Sie sich
nicht alkoholisiert ans Steuer!

Usage prévu
L’éthylomètre AlcAlert est un appareil de
dépistage permettant de détecter rapidement
l’alcool contenu dans l’haleine. Le test est
utilisé pour obtenir un résultat quantitatif visuel
évaluant le niveau de concentration d’alcool
dans le ux sanguin. Il est en vente libre pour le
grand public.
AVERTISSEMENT/ACCORD
L’éthylomètre AlcAlert™ utilise une technologie
évoluée de capteur à gaz semi-conducteur pour
obtenir une estimation du taux d’alcoolémie à
partir de votre haleine. Prenez quelques instants
pour lire le manuel avant d’utiliser l’appareil.
Avant d’utiliser l’éthylomètre AlcAlert :
• Lorsque vous insérez des piles (non fournies
avec les différents modèles), notez la polarité
correcte à l’intérieur du logement des piles.
Si vous les insérez mal, vous risquez
d’endommager l’appareil.
• N’envoyez pas de fumée ni de liquides dans
l’ouverture, car ils risquent d’endommager
le capteur. De même, certains gaz comme
les composés siliconés, le soufre et le
Fréon risquent également d’endommager
le capteur. Gardez l’appareil éloigné de
tous liquides et conservez-le dans un
environnement sûr.
• Si l’AlcAlert a besoin d’être nettoyé,
essuyez-le doucement à l’aide d’un chiffon
doux. N’utilisez pas de produits décapants.

• Attendez 30 minutes après avoir consommé
de l’alcool ou fumé pour utiliser l’appareil.
Ceci vous aidera à vous assurer que
l’échantillon d’haleine provient de vos
poumons et non de l’alcool restant dans
votre bouche, ce qui risquerait de fournir
des résultats plus élevés. Dans certains cas,
il peut arriver qu’il faille jusqu’à une heure
pour atteindre le niveau d’alcoolémie le plus
élevé après la consommation d’alcool.
• Le corps de chaque individu répond
différemment à la consommation d’alcool.
Par conséquent, la capacité de certains à
conduire en toute sécurité risque d’être gênée
à un point très inférieur au taux d’alcoolémie
toléré.

1. Appuyez sur le bouton « On » (Marche).
L’appareil émet un signal, l’indicateur
« WAIT » (ATTENDRE) clignote. L’appareil
commence un compte à rebours de mise
en marche de 14 à 0 ou de 6 à 0 (voir
« Informations supplémentaires »). Vous
devez attendre que le compte à rebours
soit terminé. Passez à l’étape 2 uniquement
lorsque l’appareil émet deux signaux sonores
et que l’indicateur « BLOW » (SOUFFLER)
clignote.
Remarque : Si l’indicateur « SAT » (saturation)
clignote après le compte à rebours et que
l’appareil s’éteint, le capteur est saturé.
Réactivez simplement l’appareil pour effectuer
un autre cycle de compte à rebours de mise
en marche. Si « SAT » apparaît de nouveau,
répétez cette procédure autant de fois que
nécessaire jusqu’à ce que le message « SAT »
n’apparaisse plus. Dans la majorité des cas, 2
ou 3 cycles de réactivation doivent permettre de
supprimer le message « SAT ». D’autres cycles
de réactivation seront peut-être nécessaires si la
saturation est importante (voir « Informations
supplémentaires »).

(Erreur) clignote jusqu’à ce que l’appareil
émette les trois signaux sonores. Soufez
entre vos lèvres, tout doucement, comme
vous le feriez pour refroidir une cuillère de
potage. Nous vous conseillons de vous tenir
à une distance de 1,25 à 2,5 centimètres de
l’embout (voir gure A).
Remarque : Si vous ne soufez pas du tout ou
si vous arrêtez de soufer avant les 3 signaux
sonores, le message « Err » apparaît à l’écran
pour indiquer que le soufe était insufsant.
Si tel est le cas, ignorez le résultat et répétez
l’opération.
3. Lisez les résultats. Le taux d’alcoolémie
apparaît sur l’écran LCD pendant 5 secondes
environs après que la mesure a été effectuée.
Les résultats clignotent alors pendant
quelques secondes jusqu’à ce que l’appareil
s’éteigne automatiquement.
Les résultats apparaissent par incréments de
0,01 de 0,00 à 0,12. Les résultats supérieurs à
0,12 % sont afchés sous la forme « +.12 ».
Interprétation des résultats
L’alcoolémie représente la quantité d’alcool
éthylique dans un volume de sang donné. Par
exemple, un taux d’alcoolémie de 0,10 signie
qu’une personne a 1 part d’alcool pour 1000
parts de sang dans le corps.
Les unités de mesure les plus répandues sont
les grammes d’éthanol par millilitre de sang
(g/ml) aux États-Unis (également appelée taux
d’alcoolémie) et les milligrammes d’éthanol
par millilitre de sang (mg/ml) dans une grande
partie de l’Europe (exprimé également sous la
forme pour mille).
Par exemple, un taux d’alcoolémie de 0,05 %
afché sur l’écran de l’éthylomètre AlcAlert
correspond à 0,05 g/ml, 50 mg/ml, 0,5 g/l, ou
0,5 pour mille.

• Le compte à rebours normal est de 6 à 0.
Toutefois, si la dernière opération remonte
à plus d’une heure, l’appareil commence le
compte à rebours de mise en marche de 14 à
0.
• Le capteur doit avoir passé la phase de
préchauffe pour fournir des résultats précis.
Par conséquent, ne tenez pas compte des
premiers résultats qui suivent le premier
compte à rebours de 14 à 0.
• Le message « SAT » (saturation) évite à
l’appareil d’afcher des taux d’alcoolémie
erronés lorsque le capteur est saturé par
des agents contaminants. Par exemple, la
saturation se produit souvent lorsque un
excès d’humidité alcoolisée se dépose sur le
capteur suite à plusieurs emplois successifs
ou à l’accumulation de contaminants sur
le capteur après une longue période sans
fonctionnement, comme lors de la première
utilisation. Dans de telles situations,
l’appareil nécessite des cycles de mise en
marche supplémentaires an que le capteur
fonctionne normalement.
• Si l’indicateur de niveau faible des piles
clignote, puis qu’il reste allumé pendant
l’utilisation, vous devez remplacer les piles.
• L’éthylomètre AlcAlert modèle BT5500 est
équipé d’un rétroéclairage. Il s’allume et
s’éteint automatiquement.
• Soufez toujours dans l’appareil de manière
régulière. Des conditions de soufe
différentes risquent de produire des résultats
différents.
• L’appareil est plus précis lorsque le véritable
taux d’alcoolémie est situé entre 0,02 % et
0,08 % et moins précis lorsqu’il est supérieur
à 0,08 %.
• Le message « SAT » évite à l’appareil
d’afcher des taux d’alcoolémie erronés
lorsque le capteur est saturé par des agents
contaminants. Par exemple, la saturation
se produit souvent lorsque un excès
d’humidité alcoolisée se dépose sur le
capteur suite à plusieurs emplois successifs
ou à l’accumulation de contaminants sur
le capteur après une longue période sans
fonctionnement, comme lors de la première
utilisation. Dans de telles situations,
l’appareil nécessite des cycles de mise en
marche supplémentaires an que le capteur
fonctionne normalement.
Le corps de chaque individu répond
différemment à la consommation d’alcool. Par
conséquent, la capacité de certains à conduire
en toute sécurité risque d’être gênée à un point
très inférieur au taux d’alcoolémie toléré.
L’éthylomètre AlcAlert doit être utilisé
uniquement pour vous donner une indication
de la présence possible d’alcool dans le sang.
Vous ne devez pas vous reposer sur lui comme
seule base pour déterminer l’intoxication ou
s’il est prudent de conduire un véhicule, utiliser
un équipement ou prendre part à des activités
dangereuses.
PNI Corporation déconseille la conduite après
consommation d’alcool. Si vous prévoyez de
boire de l’alcool, pensez toujours à avoir comme
chauffeur quelqu’un qui ne boit pas. Ne prenez
pas le volant si vous avez bu !
