(PDAs), end users can connect with friends and fa ily using short essaging services,
ulti edia essaging services, and e- ail, or access the Internet to locate products or
services within a specific geographic area, such as a restaurant reco ended by a friend.

These “pull-based” services
require users to anually initiate
a query. When retailers offer
products or services by “pushing”
advertise ents or offers to end
users, this infor ation is often
out of context with a user’s
location. So that re inder to
try the cheesecake at the local
bistro, pick up ilk on the way
ho e, or join a friend for a
coffee ay appear on the end
user’s obile device at the
wrong ti e and wrong place.
At the sa e ti e, these essages
produce an extra load on a
obile network and extra drain
on the battery in the end user’s
obile device.

Networking Application changes
the way obile end users receive
infor ation by delivering

The Al atel-Lu ent So ial Network-
ing Appli ation is a novel, lo ation-
based so ial networking servi e for
mobile devi es that delivers ontent
and buddy alerts based on the user’s
lo ation. It is part of the Al atel-
Lu ent Appli ation Suite offered
with the Al atel-Lu ent 5130
Geographi Messaging Servi es
Platform (GMSP).
With this appli ation, lo ation-based
messages are only “pushed” to end
users when they enter a geographi
messaging zone or “geographi fen e”
(Figure 1), su h as the blo k where
a offee shop is lo ated or an airport.
For example, users walking through
downtown New York an hoose to
re eive messages about the nearest
Wi-Fi®hot spot or mobile sti ky
notes left by friends about a great
restaurant in the area. The same
users ould hoose to re eive a
different set of messages when they
enter a different geographi fen e,
su h as a New York burrough.
This unique messaging apability
enhan es the end-user experien e by
ensuring end users get the messages
they want when they want them. By
allowing users to opt-in to the mar-
keting messages and so ial networks
of their hoosing, spam messages are
minimized and the load on the net-
work is redu ed. Both servi e providers
and end-users benefit with the
redu tion of unne essary message
traffi resulting in improving quality
of servi e and optimal useage of
available network resour es. And it
redu es the drain on the battery in
end-user devi es. Most importantly,
it enables a variety of mobile mar-
keting, so ial networking, hild
tra king and lo ation based servi es
(LBS) geo- hannels that an deliver
more revenue to servi e providers.
Built on Geofencing
technology
The Al atel-Lu ent So ial Network-
ing Appli ation and 5130 GMSP,
invented by Bell Labs, is powered by
the Al atel-Lu ent patent-pending
Geofen ing engine. Geofen ing*
uses predi tive movement algorithms
and intelligent load balan ing to

application, nd us rs can:

or mail applications) to build a G op pp r n twork

apable of supporting mass-market
delivery of mobile ontent, as well
as advan ed features, su h as ontin-
uously shifting or moving fen es
(e.g., fen es around two friends who
wish to be notified if they are both
at the same mall).
This unique Geofen ing engine
reates a new messaging medium,
GMS, whi h dete ts when an end
user who has opted in for the servi e
rosses into or out of a target zone.
GMS messages are delivered based
on this geographi targeting and
ontent is sent only on e a user has
entered the target zone. This ensures
messages are delivered only when
the information is most relevant.
The Al atel-Lu ent So ial Network-
ing Appli ation is just one of the
servi es possible with the Al atel-
Lu ent 5130 GMSP. Additional
verti al market GMS appli ations
an be deployed on the same GMS
platform. This drives mobile network
