Alcatel-Lucent 9900 Wireless Network Guardian
By connecting in ivi ual subscribers to resource consump-
tion, the Alcatel-Lucent 9900 helps service provi ers
manage the effects IP-base applications have on wireless
networks. IP applications in use to ay were not esigne
with wireless ata network constraints in min , an as
a result, can easily an unexpecte ly bur en the ra io
access network. In fact, subtle changes in the transmission
characteristics of wireless ata sessions can have a profoun
impact on network performance.
With the Alcatel-Lucent 9900, service provi ers can
ensure they make the best possible use of their network
an the precious air spectrum between the network an
the mobile en points.
How It Works
The Alcatel-Lucent 9900 is built with two components:
a etector an a central.
The etector monitors ata an ra ius traffic that is
mirrore from within the packet core of a 3G/4G network.
It generates “events” base on observe behaviors. It also
generates a new flow recor , which is a wireless-specific
net-flow recor , which is a subscriber-specific net-flow
recor , appen e with context specific to wireless ata
networks. The eploye etectors securely communicate
this information to the central, which provi es GUI-
access to the etectors, reports, forensics, an control.
Value
This information is proving invaluable for wireless
service provi ers on many levels:
•Operations — It allows service provi ers to etermine
which subscribers, servers, an applications are the
most significant contributors of non-value-a traffic
an loa on the network.
•Planning — It enables service provi ers to establish a
baseline measurement of network use at the in ivi ual
subscriber level, allowing more accurate pre ictions of
network capacity tren s.
•Engineering — It ensures packet transmissions from
evices an networks are consistent with esign, an
are not being sent frau ulently.
•Security — It allows service provi ers to etect a
new class of wireless-specific enial of service attacks
targete at the signaling layer an exhausting RF chan-
nels, as well as the mobile evices that are irectly
or surreptitiously participating in the attacks.
•Marketing — It helps service provi ers etermine
the network cost associate with supporting any given
application, thereby enabling application-level ROI
