Storageinpackingbox
IfstorageafterdeliveryofthePHEisknowninadvance,
informAlfaLavalwhenorderingthePHEtoensurethatit
willbeproperlypreparedforstoragebeforepacking.
Indoorstorage
•Storeinsidearoomwiththetemperaturebetween15
and20°C(60-70°F)andhumidityaround70%.For
outdoorstorageread“Outdoorstorage”onthispage.
•T opreventdamagetothegaskets,thereshouldnotbe
anyozone-producingequipmentintheroomsuchas
electricmotorsorweldingequipment.
•T opreventdamagetothegaskets,donotstoreorganic
solventsoracidsintheroomandavoiddirectsunlight,
intensiveheatradiationorultravioletradiation.
•Thetighteningboltsshouldbewellcoveredwithlight
greasecoating.
Outdoorstorage
IfthePHEhastobestoredoutdoors,alltheprecautions
mentionedinthesection“Indoorstorage”onthispage
shouldbetaken.Also,protectionagainstclimateisvery
important.
ThestoredPHEshallbevisuallycheckedeverythird
month.Thecheckincludes:

Takenoutofservice
If,foranyreason,thePHEisshutdownandtakenoutof

•Covertheplatepackwithnon-transparentplasticlm.
Installationafterlong-termstorage
IncaseswhenthePHEhasbeentakenoutofservicefor
anextensiveperiodoftime,i.e.longerthanoneyear,the
riskofleakagewhenstartingupincreases.Toavoidthis
problemitisrecommendedtoletthegasketrubberrestand
regainmostofitselasticity.

boxesand,insomecases,metalstraps.
•Woodandcardboardboxescanbereused,recycledor
usedforenergyrecovery.
•Plasticsshouldberecycledorburntatalicensedwaste
incinerationplant.
•Metalstrapsshouldbesentformaterialrecycling.
Maintenance
•Allmetalpartsshouldbesentformaterialrecycling.

ThePlateHeatExchanger(PHE)consistsofapackofcorrugatedmetalplateswithportholes
forinputandoutputforthetwoseparateuids.Theheattransferbetweenthetwouidswilltake
placethroughtheplates.
Theplatepackisassembledbetweenaframeplateandapressureplateandcompressedby
tighteningbolts.Theplatesarettedwithagasketwhichsealsthechannelanddirectsthe
uidsintoalternatechannels.Theplatecorrugationpromotesuidturbulenceandsupportsthe
platesagainstdifferentialpressure.

•Beforestart-upcheckthatalltighteningboltsarermlytightenedandthatthecorrect
measurementsoftheplatepack,refertoPHEdrawing.
•WhenconnectingthepipingsystemmakesurethepipesdonotsubjectthePHEtostress
orstrain.
•T oavoidwaterhammer,donotusefast-closingvalves.
•MakesurethatnoairremainswithinthePHE.
•Safetyvalvesshallbeinstalledaccordingtocurrentpressurevesselregulations.
•Itisrecommendedthatprotectivesheetsareusedtocovertheplatepack.Protectagainst
leakageofhotoraggressiveuidsandthehotplatepack
•IfthePHEsurfacetemperatureisexpectedtobehotorcoldtakeprotectiveactions,such

Donotrunpumpstemporarilyemptyonthesuctionside.

Adjustmentsofowratesshouldbemadeslowlyinordertoavoidtheriskofpressure
surge(waterhammer).
Waterhammerisashortlastingpressurepeakthatcanappearduringstart-upor
shut-downofasystem,causingliquidstotravelalongapipeasawaveatthespeedof
sound.Thiscancauseconsiderabledamagetotheequipment.

•Neutralizationofcleaningliquidsbeforedraining.

Chlorineasagrowthinhibitor
Chlorine,commonlyusedasgrowthinhibitorincoolingwatersystems,reducesthecorrosion
resistanceofstainlesssteels(includinghighalloyslikeAlloy254SMO).
Chlorineweakenstheprotectionlayerofthesesteelsmakingthemmoresusceptibletocorrosion
attacksthentheyotherwiseshouldbe.Itisamatteroftimeofexposureandconcentration.
Ineverycasewherechlorinationofnon-titaniumequipmentcannotbeavoided,yourlocal
representativemustbeconsulted.
Waterofmorethan300ppmClionsmaynotbeusedforpreparationofcleaningsolutions.
