Checking the slow cooker and package contents
NOTICE!
Risk of damage!
If you are not cautious when opening the packaging with a sharp
knife or other pointed object, you may quickly damage the slow
cooker.
− For this reason, be very careful when opening it.
1. Take the slow cooker out of the packaging.
2. Check to make sure that the delivery is complete (see Fig. A).
3. Check whether the slow cooker or individual parts are damaged. If this
is the case, do not use the slow cooker. Contact the manufacturer via the
service address indicated on the warranty card.
Preparing for use
• The ceramic bowl must be thoroughly washed and then dried
before first use in order to remove any dirt.
• When you first use the slow cooker, you may notice a slight
odor due to the burning off of manufacturing residues. This is
normal and the odor will disappear quickly after a few uses.
1. Place the base unit 5on a dry, stable, flat and heat-resistant surface
near a suitable power outlet. Always use the handles 3to move the slow
cooker.
The slow cooker should always stand on its support stands 4.
2. Wash the lid 1and ceramic bowl 2in hot soapy water. Rinse and dry
thoroughly.
3. Operate the slow cooker before initial use.
To do so, pour approximately 4 ¼ cups (1liter) of water into the ceramic bowl
and allow the slow cooker to operate at a high heat for approximately
20 minutes. After 20 minutes, turn off and unplug the slow cooker. Allow
the slow cooker to cool down completely and then discard the water from
the ceramic bowl. Rinse and dry the ceramic bowl and replace it in the base
unit. See chapter “Operation” for details.
The slow cooker is now ready for use.

Operation
14
Operation
1. Add the ingredients into the ceramic bowl 2with stock or water. For best
results, the ceramic bowl should be at least half-filled. Do not overfill the
ceramic bowl more than two-thirds full (see Fig. C).
2. Replace the lid 1on the ceramic bowl.
The lid does not form a tight fit on the ceramic bowl but should be centered
on the ceramic bowl for best results. Do not remove the lid unnecessarily
during cooking because this will result in major heat loss and increase the
cooking time.
3. Plug the power cord into an appropriate power outlet.
The display 6will come on, showing “00:00” (see Fig. B).
4. Press the power button 7to switch on the slow cooker.
The display will show “LOW 08:00”. The slow cooker is by default programmed
to cook for 8hours at a low heat after switching on.
The display starts to count down to zero while showing the remaining
cooking time. The blue backlight of the display is on during the countdown
(see step 1 in Fig. D).
5. To select cooking at a high heat, press the mode button 8once.
The display will show “HIGH 04:00”. The slow cooker is then programmed to
cook for 4hours at a high heat.
6. To change the cooking time, press the (+) button 10 or (–) button 9.
You can change the time in 30 minute increments or decrements for a
maximum cooking time of 20 hours or a minimum cooking time of
30 minutes.
7. When the cooking time has elapsed, the slow cooker will automatically go
into the keep warm mode for one hour. The display will show “WARM 01:00”.
If you want to stop cooking before the cooking time, press the power
button. The slow cooker will then go into the standby mode.
If necessary, the keep warm mode can be selected by pressing
the mode button to keep the already cooked food at serving
temperature (default time: 2 hours). Press the (+) or (–) button
to change the keep warm time (between 30 minutes and 20
hours). Do not keep food in the keep warm mode longer than
necessary. The keep warm mode is not suitable for preparing
food.
8. After one hour in the keep warm mode, the slow cooker will automatically
switch off and go into the standby mode.
To stop the keep warm mode at any time, press the power button. The slow
cooker will then go into the standby mode.

Guide to slow cooking
15
When the slow cooker goes into the standby mode, the blue
backlight of the display will be on for another 3 minutes (see step 2
in Fig. D) and then turn off (see step 3 in Fig. D). In the standby
mode, you can press the mode button and the (+) and (–) buttons
to set and start a new cooking cycle as long as “00:00” shows on
the display.
9. When cooking is done, unplug the power cord of the slow cooker. Always
use oven mitts or gloves to remove the lid or ceramic bowl to avoid burns.
The display shows no blue backlight and messages when the power is
completely cut off (see step 4 in Fig. D).
10. Wash all parts after use. See chapter “Cleaning and maintenance”.
Guide to slow cooking
General guidelines
− Slow cooking is a gentle method of cooking, retaining both the flavors
and nutrients in food. It allows cheaper cuts of meat to be used which will
become tender and succulent. More delicate foods such as fish, fruit, and
vegetables will not breakup during cooking. As the temperature is low, very
little sticking occurs and very little stirring is required.
− Some ingredients are not suitable for extended cooking in the slow cooker.
Pasta, seafood, milk, cream and sour cream should be added 2 hours before
serving.
− Some factors can affect how quickly a recipe will cook, for example:
• the water and fat content of the ingredients (e.g. the higher the fat
content of the meat, the less liquid is required),
• the temperature,
• the size of the ingredients (ingredients which have been cut into pieces
will cook faster).
− If cooking meat and vegetables together, ensure the vegetables are
placed in the bowl first as they take longer to cook. For best results, it is
recommended that hard vegetables are cut into similarly sized pieces to
ensure even cooking. A rule of thumb for slow cooking most of the meat-
and-vegetable recipes is 8–10 hours at a low heat and 4–6 hours at a high
heat.
− When cooking meat with a high fat content, place thick vegetable slices
underneath, so the meat will not sit and cook in the fat.
− Pre-browning meat and vegetable on a pan before slow cooking can lock in
moisture and intensify tenderness and/or flavors.
− Slow cooking has very little evaporation and retains liquid from ingredients
within the ceramic bowl. When using traditional recipes, it is advisable to

Guide to slow cooking
16
halve the liquid content. However, after cooking if the liquid quantity is
excessive, remove the lid and cook for around 30–45 minutes at a high heat
until the liquid has reduced by the desired amount.
− Always ensure that hot liquid is used when adding to the ceramic bowl
during cooking. Adding cold liquids may cause the ceramic bowl to crack.
− Never place frozen meat or poultry in the slow cooker. It must always be
thoroughly defrosted first.
− Always cook with the lid on. Frequent lifting of the lid during cooking will
extend the cooking time. Do not lift the lid during the first half of the cooking
time.
− Always ensure the food is thoroughly cooked before eating.
− Do not use the slow cooker to reheat food. The temperature rise of a slow
cooker is not fast enough to re-heat cooked food.
− The slow cooker can operate at a low heat all day and night if required. At a
high heat, foods will cook in approximately half the cooking time required at
a low heat. When cooking at a high heat, additional liquid may be required.
− Do not leave the slow cooker unattended when you are cooking at a high
heat as the contents may boil dry.
− General guidelines for slow cooking different types of meat:
Meat Weight (approx.) Low heat High heat
Beef roast 3 lb (1.5 kg) 3–4 hours 1 hours
Beef brisket 4–5 lb (2 kg) 8 hours 6 hours
Turkey breast 6–7 lb (3 kg) 6–7 hours 3–4 hours
Whole chicken 4–6 lb (2.5 kg) 6 hours 4 hours
Chicken pieces,
bone-in
3–4 lb (1.5 kg) 4–5 hours 1.5 hours
Fully cooked ham 7.5 lb (3.5 kg) 4–5 hours 3 hours
Pork tenderloin 2–3 lb (1 kg) 2–3 hours 1.5–2 hours
Pork roast 4–5 lb (2 kg) 4–5 hours 2–2.5 hours
Pork chops 2–3 lb (1 kg) 5 hours 2–3 hours
Converting standard recipes/cooking times for slow
cooking
− Vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and turnips require a longer cooking
time. Place them at the bottom of the bowl and cover them with liquid.
− Only add fresh milk or yogurt during the last 2 hours of the cooking time.
Evaporated milk can be added at the start of cooking.

Cleaning and maintenance
17
− Rice, noodles and pasta are not recommended for long cooking times
(except pudding rice). Cook them separately and then add them to the slow
cooker during the last 30 minutes of the cooking time.
− Dried beans (such as dried kidney beans) must be soaked overnight. They
should be boiled for 10–15 minutes before placing them in the slow cooker.
− Add canned beans 30–45 minutes before the end of the cooking time.
− When making soup, stew or sauce, reduce the liquid or water required in the
original recipe. If it is too thick, liquids can be added later.
− When cooking a vegetable-type casserole, there needs to be liquid in the
recipe to prevent scorching on the sides of the ceramic bowl.
− Use the following table as a reference to adapt recipes to the slow cooker:
If recipe time is: Cook at a LOW heat
15–30 minutes 4–6 hours
60 minutes 6–8 hours
1–3 hours 8–12 hours
