Thank you for purchasing the StorTrends® 3100 storage appliance. Please take a few
minutes to review this set up guide before beginning the installation process. If you
require a further explanation of any item covered in this guide, please refer to the
installation instructions on your CD.
This manual is written for the end-user to get up and running with the unit as quickly as
possible. Installation and maintenance should be performed by experienced technicians
only.
Hardware Installation
This section provides a quick setup checklist to get your StorTrends® 3100 Storage
Appliance up and running. Following the steps in the order given should enable you to
have the system operational within a minimal amount of time.
Note: Follow the steps in the order given to complete the installation process in a minimal
amount of time. Read this section in its entirety before you begin the installation
procedure outlined in this section.
Unpack the StorTrends® 3100 Storage Appliance
You should inspect the box the StorTrends® 3100 Storage Appliance was shipped in and
note if it was damaged in any way. If the server itself shows damage, you should file a
damage claim with the carrier who delivered it.
Decide on a suitable location for the rack unit that will hold the StorTrends® 3100
Storage Appliance. It should be situated in a clean, dust-free area that is well ventilated.
Avoid areas where heat, electrical noise and electromagnetic fields are generated. You
will also need it placed near a grounded power outlet. Read the Rack and Server
Precautions in the next section.

Preparing for Setup
You should have received the following:
•An 3100 Chassis
•Three Power Cord
•Rails (See the Rails subsection for an expanded list)
•Rail Screws (See the Rail Screws subsection for an expanded list)
•Software Envelope (See the Software Envelope subsection for an expanded list)
Note: Your StorTrends® 3100 may or may not ship with everything listed in the Retail Packing
List. Contact your AMI authorized reseller to find out what is shipped with your
StorTrends® 3100 storage appliance if the contents do not match the ones listed in this
document.

933803-XXA 1 Left-side Rack Rails (Front Part) 680 mm long (26.75 inches long). The Rack Rails (Back Part) slides into this, creating an adjustable
Rack Rail to accommodate Rack Enclosures between 70 cm (27.3
inches) to 85 cm (33.2 inches) deep. Meaning that the Rack Rails
can be extended from 70 cm (27.3 inches) to 85 cm (33.2 inches)
deep.

Washer to secure the Rack Rails to your Rack Enclosure.

Rack Rails to your Rack Enclosure.

StorTrends® 3100
Easy Set Up Guide 1 This guide is to be read first to quickly and easily configure your StorTrends® Storage Appliance.
Warranty Card 1 This card is different based on the warranty plan you purchased. If a
Warranty Card is not included with your StorTrends® Storage
Appliance, see your invoice.
Choosing a Setup Location
•Leave enough clearance in front of the rack to enable you to open the front door
completely (~25 inches).
•Leave approximately 30 inches of clearance in the back of the rack to allow for
sufficient airflow and ease in servicing.

Rack Precautions
•Ensure that the leveling jacks on the bottom of the rack are fully extended to the
floor with the full weight of the rack resting on them.
•In a single rack installation, stabilizers should be attached to the rack.
•In multiple rack installations, the racks should be coupled together.
•Always make sure the rack is stable before extending a component from the rack.
•You should extend only one component at a time - extending two or more
simultaneously may cause the rack to become unstable.
Server Precautions
•Review the General Safety Precautions.
•Determine the placement of each component in the rack before you install the
rails.
•Install the heaviest server components on the bottom of the rack first, and then
work up.
•Use a regulating uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect the server from
power surges, voltage spikes and to keep your system operating in case of a
power failure.
•Allow the power supply units and hot plug Serial ATA drive to cool before
touching them.
•Always keep the rack's front door and all panels and components on the servers
closed when not servicing to maintain proper cooling.

General Safety Precautions
Warning
General Safety Precautions
•Keep the area around the StorTrends® 3100 Storage Appliance clean and
free of clutter.
•The StorTrends® 3100 Storage Appliance weighs approximately 38 lbs. (17.3
kg) when fully loaded. When lifting the system, two people at either end
should lift slowly with their feet spread out to distribute the weight. Always
keep your back straight and lift with your legs.
•Do not open the chassis top cover.
•While working on the system, do not wear loose clothing such as neckties and
unbuttoned shirt sleeves, which can come into contact with electrical circuits
or be pulled into a cooling fan.
•Remove any jewelry or metal objects from your body, which are excellent
metal conductors that can create short circuits and harm you if they come
into contact with printed circuit boards or areas where power is present.

Rack Mounting Considerations
Feature Description
Ambient Operating
Temperature If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the ambient operating temperature of the rack environment may be greater than
the ambient temperature of the room. Therefore, consideration
should be given to installing the equipment in an environment
compatible with the manufacturer’s maximum rated ambient
temperature (Tmra).
Reduced Airflow Equipment should be mounted into a rack so that the amount of
airflow required for safe operation is not compromised.
Mechanical Loading Equipment should be mounted into a rack so that a hazardous
condition does not arise due to uneven mechanical loading.
Circuit Overloading Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to
the power supply circuitry and the effect that any possible
overloading of circuits might have on over current protection and
power supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment
nameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern.
Reliable Ground A reliable ground must be maintained at all times. To ensure this, the
rack itself should be grounded. Particular attention should be given
to power supply connections other than the direct connections to the
branch circuit (for example, the use of power strips, and so on.).

Installing Chassis Rails
Make sure that the chassis covers and chassis rails are installed on the chassis before you
install the chassis into the rack.
To avoid personal injury and property damage, please carefully follow all the safety steps
listed in this section.
Before installing the Chassis rails
1. Enclose the chassis with chassis covers.
2. Unplug the AC power cord(s).
3. Remove all external devices and connectors.
Procedures to Install Chassis Rails
Included in the shipping package are a pair of rail assemblies. In each rail assembly,
locate the inner rail and the outer rail.
Press the locking tab to release the inner rail from its locking position and pull out the
inner rail from the rail assembly. (*The inner rails are to be attached to the chassis and
the outer rails are to be installed in the rack.)

Locate the five rail buttons on each side of the chassis and locate the five corresponding
holes on each of the inner rail.
Note: One end of the hole is larger than the other end of the hole.

Align the larger end of each hole against its corresponding button. Once all aligned, push
the holes toward their corresponding buttons and the rail is placed on the chassis.
Once the rail is placed on the chassis, pull the rail forward until the rail buttons lock in
the small ends of the corresponding holes.
Secure the rail to the chassis with a Type G screw. Repeat the above steps to install the
other rail on the chassis.

Rack Installation
After you have installed the inner rails on the chassis, you are ready to install the outer
rails of the rail assembly to the rack.
Note: The rails are designed to fit in the racks with the depth of 28" to 33".
Procedures
1. In the package, locate a pair of front (-short) and rear (-long) brackets. Please note
that the brackets are marked with Up/Front Arrows (-front) and Up/Rear arrows (-
rear).
2. Secure the front (-short) bracket (marked with the Up/Front arrows) to the outer rail
with two Type G screws.
3. Locate the two buttons on the outer rail and attach the rear (-long) bracket to it by
sliding the opening of the rear rail through the button.
4. Measure the depth of your rack and adjust the length of the rails accordingly.
5. Repeat the same steps install the other outer rail on the chassis.

6. Secure both outer rail assemblies to the rack with Type H screws and Type I
Washers.

7. Once the rail assemblies are securely installed on the rack, slide the StorTrends
3100iinto the assemblies as shown below:
Note: The StorTrends 3100i may not slide into the rack smoothly or easily when installed the
first time. However, some adjustment to the slide assemblies might be needed for easy
installation.

8. Secure the StorTrends 3100ion the rack by tightening the screws on the front sides of
the StorTrends 3100i as shown below:

Completing the Hardware Installation
Next, you should check to make sure the peripheral drives and the Serial ATA drive have
been properly inserted and have not come loose in transit.
Step Description
1. Checking the drive
bays All drives can be accessed from the front of the server. Verify that the hard disk drive trays are inserted all the way into its bay.
2. Check the airflow Airflow is provided by six high performance fans. The system
component layout was carefully designed to promote sufficient
airflow through the 3U rack mount space. Verify that all cables in
your rack are not obstructing the chassis’s airflow.
3. Connect your

5. Supply power to the
system The last thing you must do is to provide input power to the system. Plug the three power cords from the power supply units into a high-
quality power strip that offers protection from electrical noise and
power surges. It is recommended that you use an uninterruptible
power supply (UPS).

Connect to the StorTrends® Appliance
Step One: Power your system on

Step Two: Get the IP address
Once the StorTrends® Storage Appliance is fully operational, you will see the following
screen. Write down the IP Address listed in the “Ip Address” field. If you have both NICs
connected to your network, there will be two IP Addresses.
STOP!
Once again, WRITE DOWN the IP Address listed in the “Ip Address” field. Go to
ANOTHER COMPUTER on the same network to continue with the installation.

Step Three: Connecting to the StorTrends® Storage Appliance from
another system
Type the IP Address of the StorTrends® Storage Appliance that you just wrote down into
your Internet Browser.
Step Four: Logging on to the StorTrends® Storage Appliance
You will be prompted to provide a username and password before you can gain access to
it. Enter your username and password.
Default user name: itxadmin
Default password: password
Note: When you login using the default itxadmin password, you have full administrative
powers. It is advised that once you login, you change the password.
Note: Both the user name and password are case sensitive.
Note: StorTrends® iTX has a built in feature that logs you out in the event that it detects no
activity for 20 minutes and will display a message that states, “Your session has expired.”

Using the Quick and Easy Setup Wizard
If the storage has not been configured on your StorTrends® iTX Storage Appliance, you
will be prompted to run the Wizard. The Quick and Easy Setup Wizard will get your
StorTrends® iTX Storage Appliance up and running in less than five minutes.
STOP!
If you would like more control of these settings, you can enter the
Advanced Setup Wizard. Jump to the next section for more information on
the Advanced Setup Wizard.
Use the following instructions as a basis.
Note: The Quick and Easy Setup Wizard will select all the physical hard disk drives present in
the StorTrends® iTX Storage Appliance to create the RAID array. SAN and NAS
volume names are automatically generated. A default NAS Share is also automatically
created. The SAN and NAS Volumes will be using Exact Provisioning in the Quick and
Easy Setup Wizard. Twenty percent of the physically available hard disk space should be
reserved if you are planning to use snapshot storage.

Step One: Quick and Easy Wizard
If the storage has not been configured on your StorTrends® iTX Storage Appliance, you
will be prompted to run the Wizard. Click the Quick and Easy option, and then click Next.

Step Two: RAID Level
Once you initiate the Quick and Easy Setup Wizard, you are provided the following
options:
•RAID 0
•RAID 1
•RAID 5
This step will create a Logical disk and a storage pool from all the physical hard disk
drives available in the system/controller with the RAID size you specify. Once you select
Next, you cannot come back to this step.

You will be prompted to wait while it configures the box. Do not close the window or
click anywhere else.

Step Three: SAN or NAS or Both
Once an array has been created in the box, you can select how you want to use your
StorTrends® iTX Storage Appliance. You are provided with the following options:
•Only SAN
•Only NAS
•Both SAN and NAS
If you want to use your StorTrends® iTX Storage Appliance to be used for block-level
storage only, select Only SAN. If you want to use your StorTrends® iTX Storage
Appliance to be used for file-level storage only, select Only NAS. Select Both SAN and
NAS if you want your StorTrends® iTX Storage Appliance to support both block-level
and file-level storage.
