1 Introduction
The LANDCAL Blackbody Source type P1600B2 enables accurate testing and
precise calibration of LAND Radiation Thermometers, at temperatures from 500
to 1600°C (950 to 2900°F).
The source is a primary standard black body, which permits high precision
calibration of radiation thermometers. When the set point temperature is
reached, the output from the thermometer under test is compared with the
temperature of the source, as measured by an optional Platinum thermocouple,
whose calibration is traceable to National Standards.
High precision is obtained when the source is used in conjunction with the
Platinum thermocouple, which is supplied complete with a UKAS (United
Kingdom Accreditation Service) calibration certicate. Alternatively, the source
can be used in two other ways.
1) The temperature of the source can be measured by using a radiation
thermometer of traceable calibration. This method of calibration can
be described as calibration by comparison with a standard radiation
thermometer. This method of calibration usually provides the most
accurate results, as errors due to temperature gradients and non-black
body conditions are eliminated.
2) If traceability to National Standards is not required, the source can be
used without any certication. From extensive previous experience, the
temperature (as shown on the controller indication) has been found to
agree with the radiance temperature to within ±20°C (±40°F).
To simplify the accurate line up of LAND xed installation radiation
thermometers, an optical bench assembly is oered as an optional extra.
Uniform temperature conditions are achieved along the length of the
cavity, which means that the source can also be used for the calibration of
thermocouples by the comparison method.

2 Description
The LANDCAL P1600B2 comprises a cylindrical, refractory closed end tube
(cavity) approximately 300mm (12.0in) long with an internal diameter of 50mm
(2.0in). The cavity is cast from silicon carbide and the closed end is angled at
120° to increase the emissivity value.
The cavity is placed horizontally in a furnace heated by 6 silicon carbide heating
elements running from end to end of the furnace. The temperature of the
elements is measured by a Platinum thermocouple and controlled using a digital
PID controller with negligible short term drift.
An optional standard Platinum thermocouple, with a traceable (such as UKAS)
certicate can be inserted into the cavity from the rear of the furnace and used
to determine the true temperature. A second certicated thermocouple can
be supplied and, when inserted into the cavity from the front, can be used to
determine the temperature gradients along the cavity.

4 Electrical Supply Details
4.1 Introduction
A suitable electrical supply for the furnace is required. The furnace is supplied
wired for the type of supply as ordered by the customer. With a small
amount of rewiring, it is possible to use this furnace with other supply voltage
congurations. See Section 4.5 for details.
The furnace is supplied without a mains cable. The specication for a suitable
cable is dependant on the type of supply. A suitable cable size is as follows:
a) For use with single phase, 208 to 240V (up to 50A rating):
PVC insulated 3 x 16mm² (6 AWG wire) core. Fuse supply @ 50A
minimum.
b) For use with 3 phase plus neutral, 220 to 240V / 380 to 415V (up to 16A
per phase):
PVC insulated 5 x 2.5mm² core. Fuse supply @ 16A per phase minimum.
c) For use with 3 phase delta, 208 to 240V (up to 32A per phase):
PVC insulated 4 x 6mm² core. Fuse supply @ 30A per phase minimum.
A permanent connection to an appropriately fused and isolated supply must be
made to the internal terminals as shown in Figs. 2 to 4. A cable strain relief
clamp is provided inside the furnace, located close to the cable entry hole in
the case. The supply point must be within reach of the operator and must
incorporate either an isolated switch which operates on both conductors (single
phase) or all live terminals (three phase), or a quickly removable plug. The
supply must incorporate an earth (ground).

5 Commissioning
5.1 Inspection on Receipt
Check the contents against the packing note. Physically examine all items for
any damage that may have occurred during transit.
If any items have been damaged in transit, report this to the carrier and to the
supplier immediately, BUT DO NOT RETURN damaged items until the carrier
has considered a claim. Retain the packaging with the damaged article for
inspection by the carrier.
5.2 Furnace Assembly
The following paragraphs describe the step by step procedure to prepare the
furnace for use. See also Fig. 11.
To minimise the risk of damage to the furnace during transit, the target cavity
together with six silicon carbide heating elements are supplied separately. If
ordered, the measuring thermocouple(s) are also supplied separately.
To t these items:
1) Unscrew the equally spaced self-tapping screws from the stainless steel
front plate. Remove the plate.
2) Unscrew a further set of equally spaced self-tapping screws and remove the
sighting tube assembly. The cavity support is clearly visible when looking
into the furnace.
3) The cavity can now be inserted. There are four grooves of dierent lengths
cast into the outside diameter of the cavity. In this particular source, only
one of the grooves is used. Other grooves are used when the same cavity
is used in other sources.
4) Insert the cavity so that the groove that nishes approximately half way
along the length is uppermost. Insert the cavity slowly. To keep the cavity
horizontal whilst it sliding into position, you can place a clean rod or tube
approximately 1.0 m / 39in long inside the cavity. When in the correct
position, the front edge of the cavity should be level with the step on the
insulation.
5) Remove the painted rear plate by unscrewing the 5 small equally-spaced
self-tapping screws. It is not necessary to unscrew the larger screws. A
stainless steel inner plate with thermocouple support tube is attached and
will come out with rear plate. This gains access to the element sleeves. An
earth strap is attached to this plate.
6) The elements can now be inserted. Carefully insert each element in turn
into the element sleeves, ensuring that they locate into the recesses at the
front. Extreme care should be taken not to strain the elements, as they
are very fragile. To avoid overheating of the element / braid connection, t
two white insulation rings at the cold end of each element. The insulation
rings may be supplied in a separate container. The elements are not tight,
so expect a small gap to allow for dierential expansion.
7) Attach the element connections as shown in Fig. 12.

Landcal Blackbody Source
Type P1600B2
User Guide
Page 10
Power Limit Setting
The power limit setting (Op.Hi) of the Eurotherm control instrument must be set
as shown in the table below (See also Fig.16, Section 11.0):
Supply voltage (V) 200 208 220/380 230/400 240/415
Op.Hi. Setting 86 80 71 65 60
If the supply voltage is specied at the time of ordering, the unit will be shipped
with the appropriate setting.
Note
All elements are marked with current ratings in the region 20 to 30
amps. The order in which they are installed is not critical. However, to
maximise element life, the three circuits each having two elements must
be matched so that the amp rating per circuit is similar.
For example, if the current ratings of the 6 elements were 22, 23, 24,
25, 26, 27 amp then the 3 circuits would be:
22 + 27 = 49 amp
23 + 26 = 49 amp
24 + 25 = 49 amp
9) Re-attach the earth strap and replace the two rear plates.
10) Use a thermocouple sheath or piece of wooden dowel of 8mm diameter to
ensure that the groove in the cavity aligns with the hole in the rear plate.
If the sheath will not slide into the source freely, gently turn the cavity
from the front until the correct position is found. It may help to exert a
small amount of upward pressure onto the sheath so that the ‘hot’ end is
pressed down into the groove in the cavity.
11) The temperature of the source can be measured using a certied
thermocouple. If this is the method of cavity temperature measurement
to be adopted, prepare the thermocouple for insertion. Before insertion,
measure a distance of 470mm from the hot end of the thermocouple. With
a pencil, draw a mark on the thermocouple sheath source corresponding to
this distance. Insert the thermocouple until the pencil mark is in line with
the painted rear plate. This is the correct position for the thermocouple.
Lock the sliding plate (on the back cover) into place.

User Guide Landcal Blackbody Source
Type P1600B2
Page 11
Note
From information obtained via extensive testing, it has been found
that when the thermocouple is inserted into the furnace by 470mm,
the thermocouple temperature usually corresponds with the radiance
temperature to within ±3°C / ±5.4°F. However, as each furnace will have
slightly dierent properties, this position is only a general guide.
For the most accurate work when using a thermocouple to determine the
radiance temperature, the correct position for the thermocouple may have to
be determined by the user. To determine the correct position, you will need
both a certied thermocouple and a certied radiation thermometer. Use
both instruments to measure the temperature of the source. The radiation
thermometer is more accurate than the thermocouple. Therefore, adjust the
depth of insertion of the thermocouple until the temperature readings from both
instruments are identical.
12) Replace the front sighting tube assembly via the self-tapping screws.
13) Replace the stainless steel front plate via the self-tapping screws.
14) Connect the source to the mains supply, as described in section 4.1.
15) Position the furnace where it is to be used. This source is designed for
bench-mounted operation and all unnecessary movement of the source
should be avoided.
Warning
To avoid the possibility of electric shock, never expose the
elements, terminals or other electrical components when
the calibration source is connected to the mains supply.
After completion of a repair, replace all safety plates
before switching on the calibration source.
To avoid the possibility of burns, never attempt to
dismantle the calibration source until it has cooled to a
safe temperature. This may involve an overnight wait.
This calibration source contains no asbestos. The alumina-
silicate (ceramic bre) materials used in this instrument
release dust when disturbed which may, in some individuals,
be an irritant to the skin, nose and throat.
5.3 Heating up the Furnace from Cold
1) When power is connected, the uorescent indicator panel lights up and
displays the measured value and starts to control. The output light glows
or ashes when heating occurs.
2) To modify the set point, press the ‘Up’ or ‘Down’ button until the required
value is obtained (See Section 11.0).
Note
All other control parameters are factory set and locked. For correct
operation, it is not necessary to adjust any other parameter. See
Section 11 for further details.

5.4 Overtemperature Controller Using 'Eurotherm' Model 2132
Refer to Fig. 9. When switched on, the controller lights up, goes through a short
test routine, and then displays the Overtemperature Set Point.
Fig. 9 'Eurotherm' 2132 control panel
Basic operation
Use Down and Up to alter the overtemperature setpoint. This should normally
be set a little above the maximum working temperature (say 15°C above). The
unit is supplied at 15°C above the furnace maximum working temperature.
Press Scroll to view the present temperature as seen by the overtemperature
controller. Press it twice, because the rst press shows the temperature units
(°C).
Overtemperature alarm
If an overtemperature condition occurs, the OP2 indicator ashes, and an alarm
message 2FSH also ashes, alternating with the setpoint. Power to the heating
elements is disconnected.
Resetting the overtemperature alarm
To acknowledge the alarm press Scroll and Page together.
If the alarm is acknowledged while there is still an overtemperature condition,
the OP2 indicator stops ashing but continues to glow. The 2FSH alarm
continues to ash, and normal operation is not resumed if the temperature
subsequently drops.
If the alarm is acknowledged when the temperature has dropped (or after the
overtemperature setpoint has been raised) such that the overtemperature
