OPERATING PRINCIPAL
The Magnum Hand Winch is a hand operated pulling and lifting device. Being portable it
may also be used for tensioning, lowering and guying.
The instructions contained within this manual are specific to vehicle recovery, as are the
accessories that complement the winch.
NOTE: If you intend to use the Magnum Hand Winch for lifting it is advised that the
appropriately rated lifting accessories be sourced.
The Magnum hand winch operates on the principal of mechanical advantage. The
telescopic handle, when fitted to either the forward or reversing levers, transmits force to
the clamping mechanism. The pulling force is applied to the wire rope via two pairs of
spring loaded four-link clamping jaws. These jaws work alternately with the motion of
the handle to clamp and slide the wire rope through the mechanism. Due to the angle of
the jaws, as the load increases, so does the clamping force.
In the event that the winch is overloaded, a sheer pin in the forward lever will fail,
allowing no further forward movement. The reversing lever may however still be used to
release the load. Two spare sheer pins are supplied in the carry handle.

! GENERAL WARNING !
1. Before using the Magnum hand winch make sure you fully read and understand all
instructions.
2. Never use the Magnum hand winch if it is not in good working order. Continuous
monitoring of the winch, the wire rope and any accessories is essential to safe operation.
3. Make sure that all operators are fully trained before undertaking any recovery
operations. Failure to use the winch in the correct manner may result in personal injury
and property damage.
4. Do not attempt to modify, dismantle or use non-genuine parts for repair. Apart from
general maintenance, all repairs should be completed by an authorised ARB stockist.
5. Never attempt to overload the winch unit.
6. The Magnum Hand Winch must not be used to lift people.
RIGGING & ANCHORING
It is important the Magnum hand winch is secured in a safe and environmentaly friendly
manner. In the field many objects may be considered as anchor points. Remember that a
4WD vehicle may weigh in excess of 2500 kg and therefore the anchor point must be
chosen carefully. Another vehicle, ground anchor or a large, well-rooted tree is preferred.
Accessories such as Tree Trunk Protectors, Winch Extension Straps, Snatch Blocks and
Bow Shackles may be required to use the winch safely. A list of quality ARB recovery
accessories is on page 9. Figures 2-5 show examples of correct rigging and anchoring
procedures.

OPERATING PROCEDURE
NOTE: When handling wire rope always use approved leather gloves.
1. Uncoil the wire rope from the reeler in a straight line to prevent kinks.(Fig.6)
2. Push the rope release lever forward into the locked position. (this may require a little
force when the unit is new)(Fig.7)
3. Insert the tapered end of the wire rope into the rope guide.(Fig.8)
4. Push the rope through the winch. You may use the forward lever to help if necessary.
5. Once the rope emerges through the anchor point, pull the slack wire through to the
correct length.(Fig.9)
6. Engage the jaws by unlocking the release lever.(Fig.10)
7. Connect the Magnum Winch to the selected anchor point using the anchor pin on the
rear of the winch. This is performed by rotating and removing the anchor pin, then
inserting either a bow shackle or chain/strap into the slot. To lock the anchoring pin,
push the pin into position then rotate.(Fig.11)
8. Connect the wire rope hook to a suitable recovery point on the vehicle.(Note: Be sure
the point on the vehicle is a rated recovery point, not a tie down eye)(Fig.12)
9. Extend the telescopic handle until it locks into position. This may require twisting the
two sections to align the spring.
10. Place the handle onto the desired lever (forward or reverse) and crank in a forward
and backward motion to begin winching.(Fig.13)
11. To release the load, follow the above instructions in reverse order.
NOTE: The releasing lever should only be operated when there is no load on the winch.
When not in operation (ie. in storage), the release lever should be left in the engaged
position. Therefore the lever must be released before attempting to feed the wire rope.

MAINTENANCE
It is important to maintain your Magnum hand winch in good working order. Due to the
nature of 4WD recovery the possibility of dirt and other foreign matter ingress is high.
The winch should be inspected, cleaned and lubricated at regular intervals (at least once a
year).
To clean the winch, immerse the entire unit in a suitable cleaning fluid (NOT solvent
type chemicals such as acetone or ethylene trichloride as these may damage the paint
finish). Shake the unit strenuously so as to dislodge all foreign matter and turn upside
down to allow the loose material to fall out. Allow the winch to dry before lubricating the
internal mechanism with commercial gear-type oil. This can be achieved by injecting oil
through the openings and operating the levers.
NOTE: Excess oil will not damage the winch nor cause the wire rope to slip.
The wire rope should be inspected visually for damage or broken wires before each use
(Fig.14). To clean and lubricate the rope, wipe with a rag soaked in motor oil or grease.
Do not use chemical degreasers, graphite or molybdenum disulphide grease as these may
damage the rope. If there is any unacceptable wear the rope should be returned to an
ARB Stockist or approved repairer for further inspection.
NOTE: Always use approved leather gloves when handling the wire rope.
Your Magnum hand winch should be stored in a clean and dry place away from the
effects of inclement weather. The wire rope should be completely removed from the
winch and stored on the rope reeler to prevent knots and kinks.

OVERLOADING
Your Magnum hand winch incorporates a safety overload shear pin. This pin is fitted to
the base of the forward handle and in the event that you overload the winch, the pin will
break, preventing further forward winching. The reversing lever will still operate to
release the load. Spare pins are stored in the carry handle and if used, should be replaced
with only genuine Magnum shear pins (P/No. MHWSP).
To remove the shear pin, simply hit the pin with a suitably sized pin punch and engineers
hammer. Place the new pin over the hole and drive the pin in with the hammer until flush
with the surface of the lever.
NOTE: Remember to use safety glasses, as debris may be harmful.
Before resuming winching, ensure that the cause of the overload is removed. This may
involve adjusting the rigging so be sure to properly secure the vehicle.
