1 General Information
1.1 Short Description
The Operator Manual describes, for the functional unit ARGES System Controller, the mea-
sures that are required for starting the operation, the execution and control of the operation, and
the interruption or termination of the operation. The structure of the functional unit and the
security regulations are described too.
The ARGES System Controller ASC-1, ASC-2 and ASC-3 are autonomous units specifically
designed for laser beam steering and subsystem controlling.
A system controller is the central device in a system. Scan heads, lasers, sensors, actuators
and other peripherals can be connected to the system controller. Real time response to external
signals is handled by a combination of highly configurable interfaces and processing units.
That way the system controller can deal with optimized synchronization of all critical devices and
signals necessary in modern laser systems.
All system controllers can be run locally or be controlled remotely via RS232 or TCP/IP network.
The InScript software allows interactive configuration and remote monitoring via a network con-
nection. Device drivers integrate the device’s operation with the execution of user defined jobs.
The system controller’s peripheral functions can be extended by a BREAK OUT BOX, e. g. to
substitute classical programmable logic control functions like gas valve control, contactor control,
etc.

Admonition conventions The following admonition conventions are used throughout this doc-
ument to draw your attention to situations or procedures that require extra attention. They
warn of hazards to your health, damage to equipment, sensitive procedures, and exceptional
circumstances. All admonitions are set apart by a left and right indent as shown here.
WARNING
denotes that severe personal injury or heavy property damage can occur, if reasonable
safety precautions are not taken. This particularly applies to damage at or in the
system and resultant consequential damage
CAUTION
denotes that light personal injury or property damage can occur, if reasonable safety
precautions are not taken. This particularly applies to damage at or in the system
and resultant consequential damage
NOTE
is an important information about the product or a particular part of the document
to be pointed out
Instruction conventions The following instruction conventions are used throughout this docu-
ment to draw your attention to procedures, where you have to take action. All instructions are
set apart as shown here.
denotes a single step instruction
– or –
Step 1 denotes an instruction with multiple steps
Step 2 as can be seen

(1) Encoder 1, 2 connector (driver in development) 2 Encoders can be connected to the
ARGES System Controller via connectors located at its rear panel. As we do not know what
type of encoder you want to use, find the pin assignment of the encoder connectors in the
following, please. As counterpiece to this connector you need a female Sub-D 15 connector. Its
pin assignment at the soldering side corresponds to the figure and table shown below.
The pin assignment at each of these connectors allows to connect encoders that produce
• incremental TTL output signals
– or –
• absolute position values via a Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI)
The signal frequency has to be less than 30 MHz.
