The child safety lock is located to the left of the door
handle. To activate the lock, use a screwdriver to turn
the screw slot to a horizontal position. Reset it by turning
the slot to its vertical position.

dishwasher. Sharp ite s loaded in the silverware

washing any porcelain or china that has “on-glaze”

open it a little and release it. It should stay where you
released it. If it doesn’t, consult the Installation
Instructions or contact your installer.
♦Call your local water co pany to learn the water
hardness in your area. You’ll need to know this to
deter ine how uch detergent and rinse aid to use.

This anual does not cover all possible conditions and
situations that ay occur. So e situations ay arise
where use of co on sense and caution should always
be used when installing, operating, and aintaining
any appliance.

the Installation Instructions for details.
♦Use the dishwasher only for its intended purpose.
♦Do not run the dishwasher while you are out of the

da age the door seal.
♦Place sharp knives in the silverware basket with the
sharp ends down to avoid the risk of cut-type injuries.

“dishwasher safe” or the equivalent. For ite s not
arked, check the anufacturer’s reco endations.

♦Do not operate the dishwasher unless all enclosure
panels are properly in place (i.e., guard plate, access
panel, toe kick, etc.)

♦Do not abuse, sit on, or stand on the dishwasher
door or baskets .
♦To reduce the risk of injury, do not allow children to
play in or on a dishwasher.
♦Under certain conditions, hydrogen gas ay be
produced in a hot water syste that has not been
used for two weeks or ore. HYDROGEN GAS IS
EXPLOSIVE. If the hot water syste has not been
used for two weeks, before using the dishwasher
turn on all hot water faucets and let the water flow
fro each for several inutes. This will release any
accu ulated hydrogen gas. As the gas is
fla able, do not s oke or use an open fla e
during this ti e.
♦When re oving an old dishwasher fro service or
discarding it, re ove the door to the washing
co part ent.
♦Do not store or use co bustible aterials, gasoline,
or other fla able vapors and liquids in the vicinity
of this or any other appliance.
♦Disconnect electrical power to dishwasher before
servicing.
♦Repairs should be done by a qualified technician.

After you have scraped off the large food particles, place
glasses, cups, saucers, bowls and s all plates in the
upper basket, as illustrated.
Load ste ware with the ste fitted inside one of the
grooved tines on the ste ware rack. On Models D1976
and D1996, the row of tines by the ste ware rack is
adjustable to prevent glassware fro bu ping together
(clattering). Load the glassware then use the lever to
adjust the tines until the ite s are secure.
The fold-down cup shelf on the right side of the basket
gives you an additional place to stack cups and s all
bowls. Models D1976 and D1996 have a divided cup
shelf, which gives you ore loading flexibility.
So e odels have a knife stop on the front of the upper
basket, just below the cup shelf. This gives you a place
to load long utensils and knives that won’t fit in the
silverware or knife/utensil basket. The knife stop prevents
knives or utensils fro da aging the door when you
open and close it. When loading sharp ite s, always
be careful not to cut the rack coating.

Your new dishwasher features ASKO’s Super Cleaning
Syste ™. This eans that after the prewash, the water
is drained out and the ain wash starts with clean water.
If you plan to start your dishwasher right away, it’s not
necessary to rinse the dishes. You do, however, need
to scrape off the large particles of food before loading.

Whenever possible, knives and long utensils should
be loaded in the knife/utensil basket attached above the
upper basket. To avoid injury, ite s with the sharp ends
should always be loaded with the sharp ends pointed
toward the back of the dishwasher. Again, always be
careful not to cut the rack coating when loading sharp
ite s.

Lower Basket
The silverware basket is designed with 17 co part ents
to help keep the silverware separated. Load silverware
with the handles downwards and spread it out as uch
as possible to avoid nesting. For safety, load knives with
the handles up.
Avoid placing silverware ade of different aterials (e.g.,
silver and stainless) in the sa e co part ent because
of the risk of discoloration. (See page 10.)

The silverware basket has a lid in the iddle that snaps
down over the co part ents to its left or right to contain
s all, lightweight ite s that ight slip through the rack
tines or get washed out of the basket and fall through
onto the heating ele ent. The s all ite s lid is slotted,
so you also could use it to keep silverware separated,
such as teaspoons.
When loading silverware, try to avoid
nesting the spoons and forks.

ASKO dishwashers are designed to be energy efficient.
Because the achine uses less water than conventional
dishwashers, you also use less detergent and rinse
aid. Generally, only one tablespoon of detergent is
needed for a nor al wash load. The a ount of detergent
needed for your dishes, however, could be ore,
depending on the hardness of the water in your area.
Also, ore heavily soiled ite s need ore detergent.
(See page 5.)
Measure and place detergent for the ain wash into the
large detergent co part ent. The detergent for prewash
goes into the s all co part ent to the right of the ain
wash co part ent. You should use one-half the
a ount of detergent for the prewash that you use for the
ain wash. The a ount of detergent used for the ain
wash and prewash co bined should never be over three
tablespoons.
Always add the detergent just before starting the
dishwasher, otherwise it could get da p and won’t
dissolve properly.
Load larger ite s in the lower basket, such as, dinner
plates, pots and pans, serving dishes, and casseroles.
The re ovable plate rack easily lifts out to provide space
for large ite s, such as pots and pans. Be sure to load
dishware facing downward or toward the center of the
dishwasher.

We reco end that you use only unscented, granular
auto atic dishwashing detergent. Using the wrong
detergent could cause flooding and/or da age your
dishwasher. Do not use detergent that has been wet

To re ove hard water spots, try the following:
1. Run dishes through a nor al wash progra .
2. Re ove all etal dishware, such as cutlery, pans,
etc., fro the dishwasher.
3. Do not add detergent.
The rinse aid is released during the final rinse to prevent
water fro for ing droplets on your dishes that can
leave spots and streaks. It also i proves drying by
allowing water to “sheet” off the dishes.
ASKO dishwashers are designed to use liquid rinse
aids. The rinse aid dispenser is located inside the door
next to the detergent dispenser. (See illustration on page
4.) To fill the dispenser, open the cap and pour the rinse
aid into the dispenser until the level indicator turns
co pletely black. The dispenser holds about four
ounces of liquid rinse aid.
Be careful not to overfill the dispenser, because this
could cause oversudsing. Wipe away any spills with a
da p cloth. Don’t forget to replace the cap before you
close the dishwasher door.
If you have soft water, rinse aid ay cause a white fil to
develop on your dishes. You ay not need rinse aid.
* 12 grains and higher is extre ely hard water and
detergent alone ay not be enough. You ay need to
use a water softener to axi ize the perfor ance of
your dishwasher. Also, in areas with extre ely hard
water (9+) you ay need to wash at lower te peratures
to prevent hard water deposits fro for ing in tank and
wash syste .
In hard water areas, both the dishes and the achine
can develop a white or gray fil after a while. This can
The a ount of detergent needed can vary due to
differences in water hardness. To deter ine the water
hardness in your area, contact your local water utility or
area water softening co pany. The harder the water,
the ore detergent you ay need. Refer to the chart

two tablespoons of citric acid. If the water is very hard,
use a rinse aid that contains citric acid.
Different brands of dishwasher detergent have different
a ounts of phosphorous for softening water. If you have
hard water and use a detergent with less than 8.7%
phosphorous content, you ay need to use ore
detergent or use a detergent with ore than 8.7%
phosphorous content.

4. Pour two cups of vinegar into a bowl and set the
bowl face up on the botto rack of the dishwasher.
5. Run the dishes through a Nor al wash progra .
If this doesn’t work, try the sa e process with 1/4 cup of
citric acid crystals (available at ost drug stores) instead
of vinegar.

The black dot on the rinse aid dispenser indicates the
a ount of rinse aid in the dispenser. As the rinse aid
di inishes, the size of the black dot decreases. You
should never let the rinse aid get below 1/4 full.

Models D1996, D1976, and D1976CUS have a rinse
aid indicator light on the control panel that co es on
when the dispenser is e pty. After you refill the
dispenser, there ay be so e delay before this light
goes out.
A easured a ount of rinse aid is released during the
final rinse. As with detergent, the a ount of rinse aid
needed for your dishes depends on the hardness of the
water in your area. (See page 5.) Too uch rinse aid
can result in lather or foa ing and cause cloudiness or
streaks on your dishes. If the water in your area is very
soft, you ay not need rinse aid. If you do, you can dilute
the rinse aid with an equal a ount of water.
WHEN TO REFILL THE RINSE AID DISPENSERWHEN TO REFILL THE RINSE AID DISPENSER

The interior of your ASKO dishwasher is ade of
surgical quality stainless steel that has been electro-
polished to ake it the s oothest surface available.
The s ooth surface prohibits the accu ulation of dirt
and bacteria inside the unit. If the water in your area is
especially hard, however, li e deposits could for

The rinse aid dispenser has six settings. Always start
with the dispenser set on “1.” If spots and poor drying
are proble s, increase the a ount of rinse aid
dispensed by re oving the dispenser lid and rotating
the dial to ”2.” If the dishes still aren’t drying properly or
are spotted, adjust the dial to the next higher nu ber
until your dishes are spot-free.

On occasion so ething ay get through the filters and
into the drain pu p. The drain pu ps on ASKO
dishwashers are designed to auto atically reverse if
anything should get caught in the propellers, thus
ejecting the ite back into the su p area or down the
drain. Should you need to re ove an obstacle fro the
drain, first turn the power off then re ove the filters (as
explained on page 6). Next, lift out the s all black insert
fro the su p area. (You ight want to re ove any
standing water first.) You can then look into the su p
area for the ite causing the obstruction. Should you
find so ething, si ply scoop it out. Be sure to replace
the black insert before you put the filters back in.
Spray-ar jets and bearings ay so eti es beco e
clogged with hard water che icals. To re ove the spray
ar s, screw off the nut and take off the washer on top of

Your ASKO dishwasher has an overfill protection device
that auto atically shuts off the inlet valve and starts the
drain pu p if the water level in the unit should rise above
the nor al level. If this happens, turn the water off at the
ain supply and call for service.

If there is water in the base pan due to an overfill or
s all leak, the water ust be re oved before the
dishwasher will start.
When an overfill is detected on Models D1776, D1796FI,
D1876, D1996, D1976, and D1976CUS, all of the
indicator lights on the control panel will flash at once.
ENERENERGY SAGY SAVINGVING TIPSTIPS
♦If you plan to wash the dishes right away, there’s no
need to pre-rinse. Si ply scrape off large particles
and load the dishes.
♦Wash only full loads.
♦Use the Pan progra only for heavily soiled dishes.
♦Don’t use the Te p boost for lightly soiled dishes.
♦Avoid using Heat dry. (You can speed up the drying
process by opening the door slightly to release the
oist air.)
CLEANINGCLEANING THE FILTHE FILTERSTERS
In hard water areas, it ay be necessary to clean
che ical buildup fro the filters every 12 to 18 onths.
To do this, re ove the coarse filter by squeezing the
tabs and lifting it out. Next, unscrew the fine filter and lift
it and the ain filter out. Wash all three filters gently in
hot, soapy water and rinse the thoroughly.
To clean the edge around the door, use only a soft war ,
da p rag. To prevent penetration of water into the door
lock and electrical co ponents, do not use a spray
cleaner of any kind.
Also, never use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads on
the outer surfaces because they will scratch the finish.
So e papers towels can also scratch or leave arks
on the surface.

On Models D1776, D1876, D1976 and D1976CUS, the
LED window will also display a fault code (F2).
Never run the dishwasher without the filters in place.

on the outer surfaces because

Poor washing performancePoor washing performance
♦The dishes ay not be loaded properly. Make sure
that soiled surfaces are facing downward or toward
the center of the dishwasher. Also, ake sure that
the bowls, pots, etc., are not stacked so closely that
water can’t reach the soiled surfaces.
♦Make sure you are using the appropriate progra
settings for the dirtiness of your dishes.
♦An ite ay be obstructing the spray ar rotation.
With the baskets loaded and in place, anually turn
the spray ar s to ake sure they ove freely.
♦Your dishwasher detergent should be fresh and
stored tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Old or caked
detergent will not dissolve properly. Wait until you
are ready to start the dishwasher to add the
detergent. If you are using the Delay progra , ake
sure the dispenser is dry before adding the detergent.
♦Your dishwasher detergent ay be inferior. Try a
different brand.
♦Make sure the rinse aid dispenser is filled. (See
pages 5 and 6.)
♦If you have hard water in your area, try adding ore
detergent and increasing the a ount of rinse aid
dispensed. (See page 5.)
♦Check that the spray ar jets are not clogged. (See
page 7.)
Poor drying performancePoor drying performance
♦Select the Heat Dry option.
♦If you don’t want to use Heat Dry, you can decrease
the drying ti e by opening the door slightly to let out
the war , hu id air.
♦Make sure the rinse aid dispenser is filled. (See
page 6.)
♦Make sure you use the proper a ount of rinse aid.
(See page 6.)
♦Do not overload the dishes and be careful to avoid
nesting.
♦Load ite s with concave botto s tilted so as uch
water as possible will run off.
♦Unload the botto basket first to avoid spilling water
onto the dishes when unloading the top basket.
♦Dishes washed in higher water te peratures will
dry faster.
♦Certain plastics ay need to be towel dried.
Plastic itemsPlastic items
♦Always check the anufacturer’s suggested care
instructions before washing plastic in your
dishwasher. Even dishwasher-safe ite s should be
loaded in the top basket, away fro the heating
ele ent.
♦So e high-acid foods can discolor plastic. You
should rinse these ite s if you do not plan to run the
dishwasher right away.
♦Plastic ite s dry poorly and ay need to be towel
dried.
SOLSOLUTIONSUTIONS TTO COMMON DISHWO COMMON DISHWASHING PRASHING PROBLEMSOBLEMS
As with any new appliance, it so eti es takes using it a
few ti es to learn to operate it properly. If you are having
inor perfor ance proble s with your dishwasher, read
this section before calling for service. It ay save you
ti e and unnecessary expense.
Chipped or Broken DishesChipped or Broken Dishes
♦When you load the dishes, be sure they’re securely
in place and will not fall over or strike against each
other during the wash.
♦Load glasses between the tines, not straddling the .
♦Move the baskets in and out slowly to avoid
sla ing the dishes together.
♦Make sure not to load dishes so high that the spray
ar s could strike the .
♦Make sure tall glasses and ste ware will clear the
top of the tub when you push the basket in.
♦Always load delicate ite s in the top basket.
♦Do not overload the dishwasher.
♦Do not ja the glasses together when loading.
Stains and discolorationsStains and discolorations
Stains or discoloration on dishes could be caused by a
nu ber of things. Listed below are so e of the ost
co on causes. See also “Washing Special Ite s”
on page 10.
♦Too uch iron or anganese in the water can cause
yellow or brown arks on your dishes. As a
te porary solution, in place of the prewash
detergent, use one teaspoon to one tablespoon of
citric acid crystals. You should consider installing a
water filtering syste .
♦Coffee and tea stains usually have to be re oved by
handwashing in a solution of 1/2 cup bleach and
one quart of water. (Do not use on sterling silver or
silver plate.) Be sure to rinse these ite s thoroughly
before putting the in the dishwasher so there is no
bleach residue on the dishware.
EtchingEtching
If you have a cloudy fil on your dishes that can’t be
re oved, it could be etching. To prevent etching, try the
following:
♦Use less detergent. You ay be using too uch for
the water hardness in your area. (See page 5.)
♦Use a good quality dishwasher detergent.
♦Do not overload the achine. Water should circulate
freely to ensure adequate rinsing and draining.
♦Fill the rinse aid dispenser (unless you have soft
water in your area; in which case you ay not need
a rinse aid.) (See page 5.)
♦Use a lower water te perature setting.
♦Do not use the Heat Dry option.
♦Do not pre-rinse the dishes; just scrape off large
food particles and bones.

stored tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Old or caked
detergent should be thrown away because it will not
dissolve properly and will leave a gritty residue on
the dishware.
♦Wait until you are ready to start the dishwasher to
add the detergent.
♦If you are using the Delay progra , ake sure the
dispenser is dry before adding the detergent.
♦The detergent co part ent only opens in the ain
wash progra s, not the Rinse progra .
Dishwasher makes unusual noisesDishwasher makes unusual noises
♦This usually eans that so ething is not loaded
properly. Make sure the dishes are securely in place
and that nothing has fallen between the basket tines.

Dishwasher leaksDishwasher leaks
♦Use only unscented, granular auto atic dishwasher
detergent. Using a liquid detergent could cause
oversudsing and leakage.
♦You should always use fresh detergent.
♦The a ount of detergent needed for your dishes
depends on the hardness of the water in your area.
Contact your local utility co pany to learn the water
hardness in your area then refer to the chart on page
5 to deter ine the a ount of detergent you should
use.
♦Be careful not to overfill the rinse aid dispenser.
Spilled rinse aid could cause oversudsing and lead
to overflowing. Wipe away any spills with a da p
cloth.
♦Make sure the dishwasher is level. (See the
installation instructions.)
Dishwasher runs too longDishwasher runs too long
♦If the te perature of the water entering your
dishwasher is below 120°, the dishwasher runs
longer because it heats the water to the proper
te perature for the progra selected. Raising your
water heater setting ay help to shorten the cycle
ti es. If this doesn’t resolve the proble , call the

If you should experience a proble with your dishwasher,
you should review the following list of frequently
encountered situations. It could save you the cost and
inconvenience of a service call.

opened the dishwasher. If not, allow it to co plete
and check again.

gap, ake sure that the air gap isn’t blocked or
plugged.
♦If the unit is connected to a garbage disposer, ake
sure the disposer is e pty.
♦If water backs up into the sink, check the garbage
disposer and trap for blockage.
♦Check the dishwasher filters and drain area for
blockage. (See pages 6 and 7.)
♦Check for a kink in the drain hose.
♦You ay need to adjust the drain ti e to
acco odate longer drain lines, air gaps, etc. (Call
the Advisory Center.)

♦Make sure the water supply is turned on.
♦Make sure the dishwasher is turned on and the door
is closed securely.
♦Check for cri ps in the water feed line.
♦You ay need to adjust the water inlet ti e to
co pensate for low water pressure in your area.

♦The syste is designed to detect an overflow. When
it does, it shuts off the circulation pu p and turns on
the drain pu p. (See “Overfill Protection” on page
7.)

Dishwasher
Material Safe Information and Recommendations
Alu inu Yes, with Anodized alu inu ay fade or darken. Patches and discoloration ay appear,
caution but they can be re oved with steel wool. Load alu inu utensils (such as a pie
tin or roasting pan) where they do not touch other dishes because this can cause
gray or black arks. You can re ove these spots with a nonabrasive cleaner.
Cast Iron No The seasoning is lost and the iron rusts. Hand wash and dry i ediately.
China Yes, with China without decoration or with decoration protected by glaze is dishwasher
caution safe. However, you should arrange the objects so they do not touch each other or
they could be da aged.
China with a pattern on top of the glaze or with gold leaf decoration ay fade. If
possible, check with the anufacturer. If that isn’t possible, wash one ite over
an extended period then co pare it with the colors and patterns of the rest of the
set. Wash in the Quick progra on a low te perature setting.
Copper Yes, with Do not wash copper in the sa e load as silver or silver plate. It could discolor the
caution silver ite s. Do not let copper ite s co e in contact with stainless steel.
Crystal No Antiques and very delicate china should not be washed in the dishwasher. Certain
types of lead crystal ay etch if achine washed. Check with the anufacturer.
Yes Wash at a low te perature setting. Be sure to load crystal dishware so that it is
secure and will not fall over or knock against other dishware while being washed.
Dirilyte No Gold-colored flatware can beco e discolored.
Disposable No Cannot withstand achine washing.

Glass Yes Exception: Milk glass ay turn yellow.
Knives No Sharp kitchen knives ay beco e dull if washed in very hot water and allowed to

loosen. Plastic handles ay discolor. Check anufacturer’s washing instructions.
Lead crystal No Certain types of lead crystal ay etch if achine washed.
Non-dishware No Never wash ite s such as electronic air cleaners, air filters of any kind, paint
ite s brushes, etc. You could da age the dishwasher.
Non-stick Yes If arked “Dishwasher Safe.” After washing, wipe the non-stick coating area with
coatings vegetable oil to aintain its non-stick quality.
Pewter No Pewter will tarnish when achine washed.
Plastic Yes If the ite is labeled “Dishwasher Safe.” Otherwise, check with the anufacturer.
Always load plastic in the top basket. Do not use Heat dry. Do not wash disposable
plastic ite s.
Silver and Yes, with Rinse these ite s if you’re not going to wash the i ediately; salty or acidic
Silver plate caution foods can stain if left on. Dry dishwasher detergent can produce black arks
which are difficult to re ove. Do not put silver and silver plate in the sa e silverware
basket with stainless steel. Contact between these etals can da age silver.
Do not wash copper utensils in the sa e load. This could cause a brown fil on
the silver. Also, adhesives used to attach so e hollow-handled knives can loosen.
Stainless Yes, with Rinse these ite s if you’re not going to wash the i ediately; salty or acidic
Steel caution foods can stain if left on. Dry dishwasher detergent can produce black arks
which are difficult to re ove. Do not ix different types of stainless steel in the

Tin No Tin will rust.
Wood No Unless arked “Dishwasher Safe” by the anufacturer. Wood can warp, crack or
lose shape with any kind of washing.
Most co on dishware ite s can be safely washed in
an auto atic dishwasher. If you have any doubts about
a particular ite , check with the anufacturer to see if it
is dishwasher safe. If that isn’t possible, you ight wash
one ite of a set a few ti es and co pare it to the rest
of the set to deter ine if washing it in the dishwasher
had any affect on it.
