Safety information
Electrical Safety
• Before installing or removing signal cables, ensure that the power cables for
the system unit and all attached devices are unplugged.
• To prevent electrical shock hazard, disconnect the power cable from the
electrical outlet before relocating the system.
• When adding or removing any additional devices to or from the system, contact
a qualied service technician or your dealer. Ensure that the power cables for
the devices are unplugged before the signal cables are connected. If possible,
disconnect all power cables from the existing system before you service.
• If the power supply is broken, do not try to x it by yourself. Contact a qualied
service technician or your dealer.
Operation Safety
• Servicing of this product or units is to be performed by trained service
personnel only.
• Before operating the server, carefully read all the manuals included with the
server package.
• Before using the server, make sure all cables are correctly connected and the
power cables are not damaged. If any damage is detected, contact your dealer
as soon as possible.
• To avoid short circuits, keep paper clips, screws, and staples away from
connectors, slots, sockets and circuitry.
• Avoid dust, humidity, and temperature extremes. Place the server on a stable
surface.
This product is equipped with a three-wire power cable and plug for the user’s
safety. Use the power cable with a properly grounded electrical outlet to avoid
electrical shock.

1.1 Key features
As one of the Taiwan Excellence Winners in 2006, ASUS Server RS260-E4/RX8
is based on two Dual-Core Intel®Xeon® processor 5000/5100 Sequence or Quad-
Core Intel®Xeon® processor 5300/5400 Sequence, FSB 1333MHz and up to 8M L2
cache. Running on the Intel® 5000P MCH, and Intel® 6321ESB I/O Controller Hub
chipset, it supports 64-bit computing to deliver outstanding performance upgrade.
The RS260-E4/RX8 also supports 8 hot-swap SAS or SATA2 HDDs within the
limited 2U server space. The 12 DIMM slots enable DDR2 533/667 fully buffered
memory up to 48GB, signicantly raising memory performance of server systems.
RS260-E4/RX8 provides the high performance brought by the latest technology
and ASUS unique features.
The RS260-E4/RX8 offers complete RAID functions: RAID 0, 1, 1E, providing
reliable data protection. In addition, optional ZCR PCI-X card for customer, providing
hardware RAID 5, 50 function for upgrading in the future. Such storage solutions help
enterprises get highest level of data integrality, storage efciency, system usability,
and application exibility.
The system thermal is always the key factor which affects system stability. Thermal
solution is critical for maintaining system temperature, so every excellent server
should have an outstanding cooling system. The RS260-E4/RX8 adopted the Smart
Fan II technology, which could monitor system temperature and intelligently adjust
fan speeds for optimal cooling or quiet operation.
Like other ASUS servers, the RS260-E4/RX8 incorporated ASWM2.0 system
management software, an effective management and monitoring system. With ASUS
nest after-sales service and free “0800 special telephone line” service, customers can
use RS260-E4/RX8 without worrying about possible malfunctions during operation.

• If you install only one CPU, install the CPU
to the CPU1 socket only. The system will not
boot and the CPU warning LED will light up if a

2.4 Installing ASUS RAID card
The ASUS RAID card allows users to create RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 from SAS
hard disk drives connected to the SAS connectors on the motherboard.

2.5 Installing ASUS Server Management
Board
ASUS Server Management Board is an Intelligent Platform Management Interface
(IPMI) 2.0-compliant board that allows users to monitor, control and manage a
remote server from the local or central server in local area network (LAN).

• Monitor the running status of major components via LAN or Serial Port, such
as CPU and memory utilization, storage capacity and networking transfer rate.

reading when the system is out-of-band)”.
• Support Dynamic Host Conguration Protocol (DHCP), which avoids
