AboutATDInverters
ATD,aninnovatorinportableinverterdesign,hasdevelopedanewlineofsuper‐efficientpowerinverterswiththe
highestsurgecapabilityintheindustry.Theseextremelyadvanced,microprocessorcontrolledunitsruncoolerand
morereliablethananyintheirclass.Theirsuperiorsurgecapabilityallowsthemtostarteventhemostdifficult
loads,includingcolortelevisions,TV/VCRcombinations,microwaves,refrigerationunits,evensmallair
conditioners!Theyalsohavethehighestefficiencyavailable(upto90%)whichtranslatesintolongerrunningtime
andextendedbatterylife.
Invertersconvertlowvoltage,directcurrent(DC)to110‐voltalternatingcurrent(AC).Dependingonthemodel
anditsratedcapacity,theinvertersdrawpowereitherfromstandard12voltautomobileandmarinebatteriesor
fromportablehighpower12voltsources.

GettingStarted
Whenyouturnonanapplianceoratoolthatoperatesusingamotorortubes,itrequiresaninitialsurgeofpower
tostartup.Thissurgeofpowerisreferredtoasthe"startingload"or"peakload".Oncestarted,thetoolor
appliancerequireslesspowertocontinuetooperate.Thisisreferredtoas"continuousload"intermsofpower
requirements.Youwillneedtodeterminehowmuchpoweryourtoolorappliancerequirestostartup(starting
load)andit'scontinuedrunningpowerrequirements(continuousload).Powerconsumptionisratedeitherin
wattage(watts)orinamperes(amps)andthisinformationisusuallystampedorprintedonmostappliancesand
equipment.Ifthisinformationisnotindicatedontheapplianceorequipment,checktheowner'smanualor
contactthemanufacturertodetermineifthedeviceyouareusingiscompatiblewithamodifiedsinewavesource.

ConnectingYourInverter
1. MakesuretheON/OFFrockerswitchlocatedonthefrontpaneloftheinverterisintheOFF(0)position.
2. Removeyourcigarettelighterandpushthe12voltpowerplugfirmlyintothecigarettelighterreceptaclein
yourvehicle.
3. TurntheinverterrockerswitchtotheON(I)position.TheGREENLEDIndicatorlightshouldglow,confirming
thatthereispowerrunningtotheinverter.
4. ConfirmthattheappliancetobeoperatedisturnedOFF.TurntheinverterrockerswitchtotheOFF(0)
position.PlugtheapplianceintotheACreceptacleonthefrontpaneloftheinverter.
5. TurntheinverterrockerswitchtotheON(I)position.Turntheequipmentorapplianceon.
Note
•Useofanextensioncordfromtheinvertertotheapplianceorequipmentbeingoperatedwillnot
significantlydecreasethepowerbeinggeneratedbytheinverter.Forbestoperatingresults,theextension
cordshouldbenomorethan50feetlong.
•IfthegreenLEDblinkswhenyoufirstturntheinverterON,thisindicatesthatthereisashortcircuitwithin
thepowersupply.TurntheinverterOFF.Removethe12voltplugfromthecigarettelightersocket,firmly

TelevisionandAudioSuggestions
Althoughtheseinvertersareshieldedandfilteredtominimizesignalinterference,someinterferencewithyour
televisionpicturemaybeunavoidable,especiallywithweaksignals.However,herearesomesuggestionsthatmay
improvereception.
1. First,makesurethattelevisionantennaproducesaclearsignalundernormaloperatingconditions(i.e.,at
homepluggedintoastandard110VACwalloutlet).Also,ensurethattheantennacableisproperlyshielded
andofgoodquality.
2. Changethepositionsoftheinverter,antennacablesandtelevisionpowercord.
3. Isolatethetelevision,itspowercordandantennacablesfromthe12‐voltpowersourcebyrunningan
extensioncordfromtheinvertertothetelevisionset.
4. Coilthetelevisionpowercordandtheinputcablesrunningfromthe12‐voltpowersourcetotheinverter.
5. Attacha"FerriteDataLineFilter"tothetelevisionpowercord.Morethanonefiltermayberequired.These
filtersareavailableatmostelectronicsupplystores.
Note
•Inexpensivesoundsystemsmayemita"buzzing"soundwhenoperatedwiththeinverter.Thisisdueto
inadequatefiltersinthesoundsystem.Thereisnosolutiontothisproblemshortofpurchasingasound
systemwithahigherqualitypowersupply.
BlownAutomotiveFuses
Dependingonthemakeandmodelofyourautomobile,runningthepowerinverternearfullcapacityfromyour
cigarettelighterportmayresultinablownautomotivecigarettelighterfuse.Thisfusewillneedtobereplaced
withthesamesizefuse.Pleasenote,ablownautomotivefusewillnotcausedamagetoyourcarwiring.Toavoid
blowinganautomotivefuseinthissituation,donotoperatethepowerinverterover200wattsforextended
periodsoftimefromyourcigarettelighteror12voltpowerport.
BlownPowerInverterFuses
Yourpowerinverterisequippedwitha20‐ampspadetypefuse.Withreasonablecareitshouldnotbenecessary
toreplacethesefuses.Mostblownfusesaretheresultofreversepolarityorashortcircuitwithintheapplianceor
equipmentbeingoperated.Ifthefusehappenstoblow,disconnecttheapplianceorequipmentimmediately,find
thesourceoftheproblem,repairit,andtheninstallanewfuse.
SourceofPower
Mostautomobileandmarinebatterieswillprovideanamplepowersupplytotheinverterfor30to60minutes
evenwhentheengineisoff.Actualtimemayvarydependingupontheageandconditionofthebattery,andthe
powerdemandbeingplacedonitbytheequipmentbeingoperatedwiththeinverter.
Ifyoudecidetousetheinverterwhiletheengineisoff,werecommendthatyoustarttheengineeveryhourand
letitrunforapproximately10minutestorechargethebattery.Wealsorecommendthatthedevicepluggedinto
theinverterbeturnedOFFbeforestartingthevehicleengine.
Althoughitisnotnecessarytodisconnecttheinverterwhenturningovertheengine,itmaymomentarilyceaseto
operateasthebatteryvoltagedecreases.
Whentheinverterisnotsupplyingpower,itdrawsverylowamperagefromthebatteryandmaybeleftconnected
tothebatteryforuptothreehours.
However,werecommendtheinverteralwaysbedisconnectedwhennotinuse.

InverterProtectionFeatures
TheREDLEDIndicatorlightwillturnonandtheinverterwillturnitselfoffautomaticallywhen:
1. Thepowerinputfromthebatterydropsto9.5volts.(Whenthepowerinputdropsto10.5volts,analarmwill
soundforanextendedperiod).
2. Thepowerinputfromthebatteryexceeds15.5volts.
3. Thecontinuousdrawoftheequipmentorappliancebeingoperatedexceeds200watts.
4. Thesurgedrawoftheequipmentorappliancebeingoperatedexceeds400watts.
5. Thecircuittemperatureexceeds165°F.
Note
•Theinverterisequippedwithacoolingfanwhichisdesignedtoruncontinuouslywhiletheinverteris
operating.Automaticshutdowncausedbyhighcircuittemperatureswilloccurwhenthecoolingfanis
unabletomaintainacoolenoughtemperatureforsafeoperationoftheinverter.
•Intheeventofautomaticshutdownorcontinuousaudiblealarm,turntheinverterrockerswitchtothe
OFF(0)positionuntilthesourceoftheproblemhasbeendeterminedandresolved.
HowPowerInvertersWork
Therearetwostagesinwhichapowerinverterchangesthe12‐voltDC(orbattery)powerinto110VAC
(householdcurrent).
STAGE1:
TheinverterusesaDC‐to‐DCconvertertoincreasetheDCinputvoltagefromthepowersourceto145voltsDC.
STAGE2:
TheinverterthenconvertsthehighvoltageDCinto110VAC(householdcurrent),usingadvancedMOSFET(Metal‐
oxide‐SemiconductorFieldEffectTransistor)transistorsinafullbridgeconfiguration.Thisdesignprovidesallour
inverterswiththecapabilitytostartandrundifficultreactiveloads,whileprovidingexcellentoverloadcapability.
Thewaveformthatisgeneratedbythisconversionisa"modifiedsinewave"asshowninthediagrambelow.
Themodifiedsinewaveproducedbyourinvertershasarootmeansquare(RMS)voltageof110volts.The
majorityofACvoltmetersarecalibratedforRMSvoltageandassumethatthemeasuredwaveformwillbeapure
sinewave.Consequently,thesemeterswillnotreadtheRMSmodifiedsinewavevoltagecorrectlyand,when
measuringtheinverteroutput,themeterswillreadabout20to30voltstoolow.Toaccuratelymeasureofthe
outputvoltageoftheinverter,useatrueRMSreadingvoltmetersuchasaFluke87Fluke8060ABeckman4410,
