The instrument cluster and center console
illumi nat ion (gauges and need les) comes
on when you switch on the ignition and the
vehicle headlights areoff. Be aware of the
following diffe rence betwee n mode ls built
to USor Canadian specific ations:
-USAmodels: illumination of the instru-
ment cluster (gauges and needles),
dash and center console around the
gearshift lever is controlled by a light
sensor located inthe instrument panel.
The instrument panel illumination will
automatically become dimmer as the
daylight fades away and eventually will
go out completely when outside light is
very low. This is to remind you, the driv-
er, to switch on the headlight s before it
gets too dark.
-Canadamodels: instrument panel illu-
mination will stay bright regardless of
the intensity of ambient light. Always
be aware of changes in outside light
conditions while you are driving. Re-
spond in time to fading daylight by
turning the light switch to position iD
(or ,;AUTO"if your car is equipped wit h
this feat ure) to turn on your headlights .
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
Thetachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
The tachometer CDc>page 10, fig. 3 is the left
one of the two large clock-type displays.
The eng ine turns at a speed 1 000 times the
single digit in the display, e.g . if the needle
points at the "2", the engine t urns at
2000RPM.
~

In strument s a nd warning / indicator lights 11
If the engine RPMs drop below 1 500, you
should downshift to the next lower gear . The
red area at the end of the scale indicates max-
imum permissible engine RPMsafter the
break-in per iod. Before reaching this area, you
should either shift into the next higher gea r or
ease your foot off the accelerator pedal.
(D Note
The tachometer needle ¢ page 10, fig. 3
@ shou ld not move into the red range. If
it does, then only for a very sho rt period of
time. You cou ld damage your eng ine by
driving at high RPM!
@ For the sake of the environment
Upshift ing early saves fuels and red uces
eng ine noise.

trolled digital clock.

¢ fig. 4 -depending on the instr ument cluster
configuration - can tu rn on the display field
lighting for a few seconds.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The eng ine coolan t gauge @ ¢ page 10, fig. 3
only works when the ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the fol-
lowing important points:
Engine cold
As long as the nee dle remains at the left end
of the gauge, the engi ne still has not reached
its operatin g tem perat ure. Avoid high engine
speeds, heavy engine loads and heavy throt -
tle .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reache d its ope rating
temperature, the need le will move into the
midd le of t he gauge and rema in there . If t he
engine is working hard at high outside tem-
peratures, the need le may tur n further to the
right. This is no cause for concer n as long as
the . warn ing light in the instrument cluster
does not illuminate .
When the . warning light starts to flash,
th is can mean one of two things: either the

12 In str um e nts a nd wa rning /i ndic at o r li g hts
coolant temperature is too high, or the cool-
ant level is too low ¢ page 17.
.&_WARNING
- Always observe the warning in
¢ page 187, Engine compartment be-
fore opening the engine hood and check-
ing the engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood ifyou see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the eng ine compartment.
Youcould burn yourself . Let the engine
cool off first so that you cannot hear or
see any steam or engine coolant .
0 Note
- Mounting additional lights or accesso ries
in front of the air inlets reduces the cool-
ing effect of the radiator. At high outside
temperatures or high eng ine load, t he
engine could overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to
properly distrib ute the cooling air when
the veh icle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, this could reduce the cooling
effect and the engine could then over-
heat. Ask your authorized Audi dea ler for
assistance.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is
on.
When the needle reaches the red area, the
warning light in the instrument cluster will il-
lum inate <=>
page 21 lilThis means you
have approximately 1.8 gallons (7 liters) of
fuel left in the tank . Time to refuel!
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed
in¢ page 257, Data.
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An ir-
regular supply of fuel can cause eng ine
misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex-
haust system. The catalyt ic converte r
could then overheat and be damaged.
Speedometer with odometer
Thespeedometer showsyou the vehicle
speed, and the odometer showsyou how
many miles (kilometers) you have driven.

The odometer and trip odometer are located
inside the speedometer .
- USAmodels - Miles
- Canadian models - Kilometers
Lower odometer
The lower odometer shows the total number
of miles (kilometers) driven.
Upper odometer (trip odometer)
The upper odometer shows the total number
of miles (kilometers) driven since you last re-
set the odometer back to zero. Youcan use
th is odometer when you want to keep track of
how many miles (kilometers) you have driven
for a single tr ip or errand. The last digit indi-
cates 1/10 of a mile (100 metres) .You can set
the tr ip odomete r back to zero by pressing the
rese t button c:>fig. 5.
Malfunct ion message
If there is a malfunct ion somewhere in the in-
strument cluster, dEFwill appear in the trip
odometer and will stay on. Contact your au-
thorized Audi dea ler to have the problem cor-
rected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is switched on, the data on
the ignit ion key are scanned automat ically.

@ Tips
- The digital clock and the odometer are
turned on for about 30 seconds when

out after the engine has been started and the
parking brake is fully released . This indicates
that the brake warn ing light is functioning
properly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking or the parking
brake is applied, there may be a malfunction
in the electrical system. In this case, contact
your Audi deale r.

braking. Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss of vehicle control and an

or a qualified workshop. Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
park ing brake released, or lights up while
you are driving, the fluid level in the
brake fluid reservo ir is too low. If you be-
lieve that it is safe to do so, proceed im-
med iately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified work-
shop and have the bra ke system inspect-
ed.
- Always keep in mind that afte r several
brake applicat ions, you will need greater
pressure on the brake peda l to stop your
vehicle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with maxim um stopping power
in critical situations . You must allow for
increased brak ing distances. The extra
distance used up by fad ing brakes could
lead to an accident.
