switch on the ignition with the vehicle headlights off. The gauges
are also illuminated when the lights are turned on . •
Engine oil temperature display
The engine oil temperature display => fig . 2 only operates with the
ignition on . To prevent engine damage, please observe the
following important points concerning the temperature ranges.
Cold range
If the needle is at the bottom of the gauge, the engine oil has not
reached operating temperature yet. Avoid high engine speeds, full
throttle applications and heavy engine loads.
Normal range
The engine has reached operating temperature when the needle
moves into the center of the gauge under normal driving condi-
tions. The needle may move higher on the gauge with heavier
engine load at high outside temperatures. This is not a cause for
concern as long as the warning light «e;,; in the display does not
flash.
Warning light «e;,;
If the symbol «e;,;in the display flashes , either the engine oil temper-
ature is too high or the engine oil level is too low ~ page 195.
If the needle is well in the upper area of the gauge, the engine oil
temperature is too high . Stop the vehicle, switch the engine off and
allow it to cool. If the warning light comes on again after driving a
short distance, contact an authorized Audi dealer. •

Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revolutions per
minutes).
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should downshift to the next
lower gear. The red area at the end of the scale indicates max imum
permissible engine RPM after the break -in period . Before reaching
this area, shift into the next higher gear, switch off the Rtronic Sport
mode or ease your foot off the accelerator pedal.
(D Note
The tachometer needle~ page 12, fig. 2 @ should not move into
the red range . If it does, then only for a very short period of time. You
could damage your engine by driving at high RPM. •

clock.

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge~ page 12,fig . 2 @ only works when the
ignition is on. To prevent damage to your engine, please note the
following important points. .,_
irechnical data

Instrum e nts and warnin g/ indi c at o r lig hts
En g in e c old
As long as the needle remai ns at the left end of the gauge, the
engine st ill has not reached its operating temperature . Avoid high
engine speeds, heavy eng ine loads and heavy t hrottle.
Norm a l t e mp e ratur e
When the engine has reached its operat ing temperature, the needle
wil l move into the middle of the gauge and remain there . If the
eng ine is working hard at high outside temperatures, t he need le
may turn further t o the right . This is no cause for concern as long as
the J_ warning light in the instrument cluster does not illuminate .
W a rning lig ht -L
When the J_ wa rning light starts to flash, this can mean one of two
things: either the coolant temperature is too high, or the coo lant
level is too low =>page 37.
If the needle is we ll on the right side of the gauge, the coo lant
temperature is too high. Stop the vehicle, swit ch the engine off and
allow it to cool. If the warning light comes on again after driv ing a
short distance, contact an authorized Audi dealer .
& WARNING
• Always observe the warning in => page 191, "Work ing in the
engine compartment " before opening the engine compartment lid
and checking the engine coolant level.
• Never open the engine comp artment lid if you see or hear
steam, or if you see engine coolant dripping from the engine
comp artment. You could burn yourself. Let the engine cool off first
so that you cannot hear or see any steam or engine coolant .
0 Note
• Mounting additional lights or accessories in front of the air inlets
reduces the coo ling effect of the radiat or. At high out side tempera -
tures or high engine load, the engine cou ld overheat.
• The front spoi ler has been designed to properly distribute the
coo ling air w hen t he vehic le is moving . If the spo iler is damaged,
this could reduce the cooling effect and the engine could then over -
heat . Ask your authorized Audi dealer for assistance . •
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only w hen the ignition is on. When the need le
reaches the red area, the warning light in the instrument cluster wi ll
illuminate =>
page 38 5) . This means you have approximate ly
2.6 gal lons (10 liters) of fue l left in the tank. Time to refuel!
The tota l tank capacity of your vehic le is listed in Technical data
=>page 254.
0 Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An irregular supply of fuel can
cause engine misfiring and fuel could enter into the exhaust
system . The catalyt ic converter co uld then overheat and be
damaged . •

Speedometer with odometer
The speedometer shows you the vehicle speed, and the
odometer shows you how many miles (kilometers) you
have driven.

(Canada models).

The upper odometer shows the tota l number of miles (kilometers)
driven since you last reset the odometer back to zero. You can use
this odometer when you want to keep track of how many miles (ki lo-
meters) you have dr iven for a single trip or errand. The last digit ind i-
cates 1/10 of a mile (100 meters). You can set the trip odometer back
to zero by pressing the reset button~ fig. 4.
With the ignition off, pushing of the Set/Check button~ page 12,
fig . 2 © can t urn on the display field lighting for a few seconds .

wil l appear in the trip odometer and wi ll stay on. Contact your
authorized Audi dealer to have the problem corrected.
Im m o b iliz er
When the ignition is switched on, the data on the ignition key are
scanned automatically.
If an unauthorized key was used, SAFE is displayed continuous ly in
the odometer display field. The vehicle cannot be operated
~
page 44. •
Voltmeter display
The voltmeter shows the voltage in the vehic le electrical system.
The norma l reading is between 12 and 14 volts. If the reading drops
below 12 vo lts with the engine running, you should have the power
supply (battery and generator) inspected by an authorized Audi
dea ler.
