BecauseSuperBroomhasreceiversforbothsecondand
thirdharmonics,andbecauseelectronicandmetalnon-
linearjunctionsgivedifferingreturns,SuperBroomisable
toprovidetheuserwithdiscriminationbetweenelectronic
devicesandnon-electronic,metallicartefacts.
AlthoughthemainapplicationofSuperBroomisthe
detectionofelectronicdevices,thisprincipleisemployed
insomeequipmenttodetectconcealedman-mademetallic
artefacts.
Thismethodofdetectionistermed‘HarmonicRadar’.
InconventionalRadararadiosignalisemittedwhich
isreectedoffatargettoproduceanechoatthesame
frequency.SuperBroom’smethodofoperationistodetect
echoesatharmonicsofthesignalemitted.

linearjunctionwithinrangere-radiatestheradioenergyat
harmonicfrequenciesoftheincidentsignal.Inthiscasethe
frequenciesproducedare:
1738.825–1739.275MHz-usuallytermedthe‘second
harmonic’
2608.2375–2608.9125MHz-usuallytermedthe‘third
harmonic’
andsoon.Acompletefrequencyplanisgiveninappendix

Thenatureofthenon-linearjunctionswithin
electronic
components
issuchthatthestrongestharmonicproduced
isusuallythe
secondharmonic
,withthethirdharmonic
usuallyappreciablyweaker.Otherharmonicsareusually
veryweak.

SuperBroomonlyoperatespoweredbyitsinternalbattery
pack.TheexternalAC/DCAdaptorisusedtorecharge
thebatteryonlyandcannotbeusedtodirectlypower
SuperBroom.
BATTERY
TheinternalrechargeableLithiumIonbatterypackgives
3-20hourscontinuoususe(dependentonthepoweroutput
setting).Thebatterywillneedtoberechargedwhenthefront
panelLCDdisplayshowsapproximately6.5V.Thebattery
isautomaticallyrechargedwhenexternalpowerisapplied
totheSuperBroomviatheexternalAC/DCAdaptor.Internal
protectioncircuitryprotectsthebattery.Ifforanyreason
thebatterysuffersanytransientfaultsuchasshort-circuit,
overchargingordeepdischarge,thepackwillshutdown.It
willremaininthisstateuntilrechargedbyconnectionofthe
externalAC/DCAdaptor.
IftheSuperBroomisleftswitchedon,asthebatterypower
levelfalls,thefollowingsequenceofeventswilleventually
occur:

THEORYOFOPERATION-HARMONICRADAR
ThissectionisintendedtoexplainhowSuperBroom
detectselectronicdevicesandwhyithastworeceivers.
Understandingthistheoryisnotessentialtooperationof
SuperBroombutshouldhelpusersperformafastersweep
andbemoreappreciativeofoperation.
PRINCIPLEOFOPERATION
SuperBroomdetectselectronicComponentsthatare:
Diodes
or
Transistors
or
IntegratedCircuits
Thesecomponentsareusedtomakeelectronicdevices
(togetherwithothercomponentssuchasresistorsand
capacitors,forexample).SuperBroomcandetectelectronic
devicesregardlessofwhetherthedeviceispoweredor
operationalalthoughthismayaffecthowwellitcanbe
detectedfromagivendistance.
SuperBroomdoesnotreacttoresistors,capacitors,
transformers,batteriesandothercomponentsthatdonot
containdiode-ortransistor-likematerials.
SuperBroomdoesnotdetectmetalobjectsexceptwhen
metallicsemi-conductingjunctionsareformed-thisis
explainedbelow.
THENON-LINEARJUNCTION
Distortionofasignalresultsingenerationofharmonicsof
theincidentsignal.Higherfrequenciesareproducedwhich
areawholenumbermultiples(integermultiples)-termed
‘harmonics’-oftheincidentsignal.

Replaceonlywiththesameorequivalenttyperecommended
bythemanufacturer.Disposeofbatteriesaccordingtothe
manufacturer’sinstructions.
CHARGINGTHEBATTERY
SuperBroomisdesignedtoautomaticallyenteradormant
statewhenpowerisappliedviatheexternalAC/DCadaptor,
(positivecentre),SuperBroominputisprotectedagainst,
reverse-polarityandover-current.
TheAC/DCAdaptorsuppliedwillworkwithACvoltages
from100to240VAC.
TheChargersocketislocatedontheright-handpanelof
yourSuperBroom.ItisrecommendedthattheSuperBroomis
lefttochargefor6hourstoensureafullcharge.
WhenconnectedtotheAC/DCAdpatortheBatteryCharge
StatusLEDonthefrontdisplaypanelisilluminatedRed.
WhenthebatteryisfullychargedthefrontpanelLED
changestoGreen.

aparticularmetallicjunctionmaygivean‘electronic
Component’likereturn.
Metallicjunctionsareoftenverysensitivetovibrationand
thisvibrationcanbeheardifLISTENisselected(alsoselect
‘2nd’)andtheareatappedwitharubberfacedhammeror
otherobjectthatwillnotcausematerialdamage.
Aboxofpaperclipsisagoodexampleofametallictarget
andexperimentationwilldemonstratethevalueofLISTEN.

Thebatterycompartmentisaccessedviaaremovabledoor
onthebaseoftheSuperBroomunit(seeopposite).The
doorissecuredbya1/4turnscrew.TheBatterypacksare
speciallyconguredforusewiththeSuperBroomandshould
onlybereplacedwithAudiotelsuppliedbatterypacks.
Thebatterypackshavebuilt-inprotectioncircuitryandare
designedtopreventreversepolarityconnection.
DisposalofBatteries
Attheendofabatterypack’susefullifeitshouldbereturned
toAudiotelforcorrectdisposal.Incorrectdisposalmaycause
seriousinjury.
Operation
PRACTICALCONSIDERATIONS-INNOCENTELECTRONICITEMS
Mostelectronicitemswillbevisibleandthereforeobvious
sourcesofafalsealarms.Thetransmitterpoweroutputand
receiversensitivityofSuperBroomarebothhighenoughto
detectlarge(inthiscontext‘large’referstotheir‘detection
size’ratherthanphysicalsize)objectsfrommanymetres
away.Ifitisnotpracticaltomoveelectronicitemsthenthe
powersettingmustbereducedtolimitthedetectionrange.
Thiscan,ofcourse,makedetectionof‘small’targetsmore
difcult.

avoidsoverloadingthetargetjunctionwithradioenergy
whichcangiverisetofalseindications.Whentheantenna
ismovedawayfromthetargetjunctionthepoweroutputis
increasedbythecontrollingalgorithm.
InDSPmodethechangesinpowerlevelaretransparentto
theuserasthereceivedsignalindicationlevels(Geigerclick,
bargraph,frontpaneldisplay)willcontinuetoriseandfall
astheantennagetsclosertoormovesawayfromthetarget.
WheninDSPmodetherotarypoweroutputcontrol(9)can
beusedtoreducethetransmitterpowerbelowthemaximum
setduringstartuptoaminimumofpowerlevel2.

SuperBroomisswitchedonthereceiversarecalibrated.
TheambientRFBackgroundismeasuredandasearch
algorithmselects10RFchannelsforoptimumoperation.This
ensuresthatpotentialinterferingsignalsareavoided,thereby
reducingfalsetriggering.
