OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

1ON-OFFPOWERBUTTON (PWR)
VOLUMELEVELMEMORY
Press this button momentarily to turn the unit on or off. The unit
will also turn on automatically when a cassette is inserted if the
ignition switch is “on”.
This button is also used to set the memory for the volume level
which will be recalled when the unit is turned on. To set the
volumememory,turn the unit onandadjust the volume usingthe
Volume Control 2to the level which you wish to be recalled when
theunitisturnedon. Then, press the On-Off button andholditfor
approximately 2 seconds. The unit will turn off and the selected
volumelevelisnow set in the memory. If the unit isturnedoffwith
the volume higher than the memory setting, the unit will return to
thememory setting whenturnedback on. If, however, the unitis
turnedoffwiththe volume lower than the memorysetting,theunit
will return to the lower setting when turned back on.
2VOLUMELEVELCONTROL
To increase the volumelevel, press the +sideof the button. The
volume will increase and the level will be shown on the display
panel from a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 80. To increase the
volume quickly, keep the button pressed. To decrease the
volume level, press the –side of the button. Keep the button

pressed to decrease the volume quickly. The display will
automatically return tothepriorityindication5secondsafterthe
last volume adjustment or when another function is activated.
This button is also used in conjunction with the Select button 3
toadjustthe bass, treble, balance, and faderlevelsasdescribed
in 4, 5, 6and 7.
3SELECTBUTTON(SEL)
DISPLAY CALL
DISPLAY PRIORITY SELECTOR
IGNITION-OFFCLOCKCALL(CLK)
This button is used to select the audio function (volume, bass,
treble,balance,orfade)tobeadjustedusingthe Level Control 2,
aswellastheindication (time or frequency/cassette/disc) shown
onthe displaypanel.Momentarypresses ofthebuttonwillchange
thedisplayfromradiofrequency/cassette/discindication to clock
time. After5seconds, the display willautomatically returntothe
priority setting.
During CD changer operation, a momentary press of the button
willchangethedisplayfromdisc/tracknumberto CDtrackelapsed
time. Another press of the button will change to clock time.
After 5 seconds, the display will automatically return to disc/track
numberif set to CDtrack displaypriority. Iftheunit has been set
to clock time display priority, momentary presses of the button
will change the display to CD disc/track number and then CD
elapsed time. After 5 seconds, it will change back to clock time
display.Ifthe unithasbeensettoelapsedtime priority,momentary
presses of the button will change the display to clock time and
thenCD disc/track number.
Additional momentary presses of the button will set the unit for
bassadjustment (level numberabove “BAS”will flash on display
panel),treble(levelnumberabove “TRE”willflash),balance (“BAL”
ondisplay), fader (“FAD”)or volume (levelnumber). Thedisplay
will automatically return to the normal indication 5 seconds after
thelastadjustmentismadeorwhen another function is activated.
This unit can be set so that the radio frequency/cassette/disc
indication(factorysetting) or clock time willappearonthe display
panelas the priority setting. To change the prioritysetting,press
andholdtheSelectbuttonfor2seconds until the display changes
to the next indication. That indication will now be the priority
setting and the display will automatically return to that indication
after any radio, cassette, disc or audio function is displayed.
NOTE: When changing the display priority setting, release the
button as soon as the display changes (approximately
2 seconds). Holdingthebuttoninfortoo long will put the
unit into time setting mode (flashing time display). See
section on “Setting the Clock”.
To check the time with the vehicle ignition switch in the “off”
position, momentarily press the Select button. The display will
illuminateandshow the time andthen automaticallyshut offafter
5 seconds.
4BASSCONTROL
To adjust the bass level, first select the Bass mode by pressing
the Select button 3so that the level number above the “BAS”

indication is flashing. Within 5 seconds of choosing the Bass
mode,pressthe +or –sideof thebutton ofthe Levelcontrol 2to
adjustthe bass response as desired. Thebasslevelwillbeshown
on the display panel from a minimum of –7to a maximumof7 (0 is
flatresponse). Thedisplay will automatically return tothe normal
indication 5 seconds after the last adjustment or when another
functionis activated.
5TREBLECONTROL
To adjust the treblelevel, firstselectthe Treblemode bypressing
the Select button 3so that the level number above the “TRE”
indication is flashing. Within 5 seconds of choosing the Treble
mode,pressthe +or –sideof thebutton ofthe Levelcontrol 2to
adjust the treble response as desired. The treble level will be
shown on the displaypanel from a minimum of –7 to a maximum
of 7 (0 is flat response). The display will automatically return to
thenormalindication5 seconds after the lastadjustment orwhen
anotherfunctionis activated.
6LEFT/RIGHTBALANCE CONTROL
To adjust the left-right speaker balance, first select the Balance
mode by pressing the Select button 3sothat the“BAL” indication
appears on the display panel. Within 5 seconds of choosing the
Balancemode,pressthe +sideofthebutton oftheLevelControl 2
to adjust the stereo balance to the left channel speakers or
the –side ofthebutton to adjust itto the rightchannel speakers.
Whenthevolumelevelbetween therightand leftchannelsisequal,
“0L R0” will be shownonthe display panel. Adjustingthe balance
toward the right will increase the number on the right side of the
display to a maximum of “0L R9” (full right). Adjusting the
balancetoward the left will increase thenumber on the leftside of
the display to a maximum of “9LR0” (full left). The display will
automatically return to the priority indication 5 seconds after the
lastadjustment or when anotherfunction is activated.
7FRONT/REARFADERCONTROL
To adjust the front-rear speaker balance, first select the Fader
modeby pressing the Selectbutton 3sothat the “FAD”indication
appears on the display panel. Within 5 seconds of choosing the
Fader mode, press the +or the –side of the button of the Level
Control2to adjust thefront-rearspeakerlevelsas desired. When
the level of the front and rear speakers is equal, “0FR0” will be
shown on the display panel. Adjusting the fader toward the front
speakers will increase the number on the left side of the display
toamaximumof “9FR0” (full front). Adjustingthe fader towardthe
rear speakers will increase the number on the right side of the
displayto a maximum of“0FR9” (full rear). The display will auto-
matically return to the priority indication 5 seconds after the last
adjustmentor when another function isactivated.
8LOUDNESSCONTOUR (LD)
Pressing this button for longer than 2 seconds will activate the
Loudness Contour as indicated by “LOUD” on the display panel.
When listening to music at low volume levels, this feature will
boost the bass and treble ranges to compensate for the
characteristics ofhuman hearing. Pressing the button again for
longerthan2 seconds will deactivatethe featureand “LOUD”will
disappearfromthe display panel.

NOTE: Momentary presses of the button will change the radio
sensitivityin Seek andScanTuning modes fromLocalto
Distant and back again as described in section bn.
9AM/FMBAND SELECTOR (BND)
AUTO-STORETUNING (AS)
MODESELECTOR
During radio operation, each momentary press of this button will
change the radio band. The indication “AM”, “FMI”, or “FMII” will
appear on the display panel according to your selection.
Pressing and holding the button for longer than 2 seconds will
activate the Auto-Store Tuning function which will automatically
scan the AM or FMII bands and enter strong stations into the
pre-set memory positions for that band. If you have already set
the pre-set memories on the AM or FMII bands to your favorite
stations,activatingtheAuto-Storefeature will erase those stations
andenter new ones. This featureismost useful whentravelingin
a new area where you are not familiar with the local stations.
Momentary presses of this button are also used to select the
audio source or mode in play. During tape play, it can be used to
changetoradiomodewithoutejectingthecassette( IN indication
will remain on display panel to show that a cassette is still loaded in
the unit). Similarly, it can be used to go back to tape mode from
radioplay. If an optionalCD changeris connected to theunit, this
buttonis alsousedtoselect CD changeroperationasdescribedincq.
bl MANUALUP/DOWN TUNING
AUTOMATIC SEEK TUNING
Eachtimethe+button is tapped, the radiowill tuneone frequency
step higher. Similarly, each tap of the –button will tune one
frequency step lower. To manually tune in a station, tap the button
oftheappropriatedirectionuntilthedesiredfrequencyisreached.
Pressing either button for longer than 0.5 seconds and then
releasing will activate the Automatic Seek Tuning function. The
radiowill seek thenextavailablestationandstop at thatfrequency.
TheSeekfunctioncanbestoppedbypressingthebuttonagainor
activatinganyother tuning function.
Pressing either button for longer than 0.5 seconds will cause the
radio to continue tuning rapidly in the selected direction until the
buttonis released, atwhich point itwill seek tothe next available
station.
bm AUTOMATIC SCAN TUNING
During radio operation, press this button to scan the stations on
the band in use, stopping at each one for 5 seconds before
continuingtothenextstation (the frequency on thedisplay panel
willflashduringScanmode operation). When a desired station is
reached, press the button again to stop the Scan function and
remain on the selected frequency. Scan mode will also be
canceled byactivatingany other tuning function.
bn LOCAL/DISTANTSELECTOR(LO/DX)
This feature is used to select the strength of the signals at which
the radio will stop during Automatic Seek and Scan Tuning.
Momentarily pressing the button will select the Local setting
(“LOC” will appear on the display panel) and only strong (local)
stationswill be received. Momentarily pressing the button again
will select the Distant setting (“LOC” will disappear from the

display panel) and the radio will stop at a wider range of signals,
includingweaker (more distant) stations.
NOTE: Pressingthisbuttonfor longerthan2seconds willactivate
ordeactivate the Loudness Contour feature as described
in section 8.
bo STATIONPRE-SETMEMORIES
To set any of the 6 pre-set memories in each band, use the
following procedure:
1. Turnthe radio on andselectthe desired band.
2. Select the first station to be pre-set using the Manual
Up/DownorAutomaticSeek Tuning Controls bl.
3. Pressthe pre-set buttonto be setand continue to holdit in.
Afterapproximately2seconds, the display will flash and the
volumewillbemomentarilymuted indicating that the station
is now set into that pre-set memory position. The station
can now be recalled at any time by pressing that button.
4. Repeattheaboveprocedurefortheremaining5pre-setson
that band and for the other 2 bands on the unit.
bp LIQUIDCRYSTAL DISPLAYPANEL
The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panel displays the frequency,
time,and activated functions.
NOTE: It is a characteristic of LCD panels that, if subjected to
cold temperatures for an extendedperiod of time,they
maytake longer toilluminatethanundernormalconditions.
Inaddition,thevisibilityofthenumbersontheLCDmayslightly
decrease. The LCD read-outwillreturntonormalwhenthe
temperatureincreases to anormal range.
bq CASSETTEDOOR
Hold the cassette with the exposed tape edge to the right and
insertit into the cassette door until the soft-load mechanism draws
the cassette in and play begins (“CASS” and IN will appear
onthedisplay panel). When the cassettereaches theendonthe
side of the tape being played, the unit will automatically change
direction of play as shown by the “1” or “2” indication on the dis-
play panel and play of the other side of the cassette will begin.
NOTE: Observe cassette operation Cautions in the Care and
Maintenancesection of thismanual.
br FAST-FORWARD BUTTON(FF)
FAST-FORWARD MUSIC SEARCH SYSTEM
A momentary press of this button will activate the Fast-Forward
MusicSearchSystem function (“MSS”, movingbars andflashing
“1” will appear on the display panel). The unit will automatically
fast-forwardtothe beginning of the nextselection and beginplay.
To search for a particular selection, tap the button until the
respective number (up to 9) flashes on the display panel. For
example,to move forward3selections from thepresentpoint on
the tape, tap the button 3 times until the number “3” flashes on
the display panel. The unit will fast-forward 3 selections and
begin play. To stop Music Search function at any point, press
the Program Selector button bt or tap the Rewind button bs to
reducethe number of theselectionbeing searched.
Pressingandholding the Fast-Forward button forlongerthan0.5
seconds will cause the tape to continually move in the forward
direction of play (moving bars will appear on the display panel).

To stop Fast-Forward movement, press the Program Selector
button bt and normal play will resume.
bs REWINDBUTTON (REW)
REWINDMUSIC SEARCH SYSTEM
A momentary press of this button will activate the Rewind Music
SearchSystemfunction(“MSS”,movingbars and flashing “1” will
appearonthedisplaypanel). Theunitwillautomaticallyrewindto
thebeginning of thepresent selectionand begin play. Tosearch
for a particular selection, tap the button until the respective
number (up to 9) flashes on the display panel. For example, to
move backward 3 selections from the present point on the tape
(including the present selection), tap the button 3 times until the
number “3” flashes on the display panel. The unit will rewind
3 selections and begin play. To stop Music Search function at
any point, press the Program Selector button bt or tap the
Fast-Forward button br to reduce the number of the selection
beingsearched.
PressingandholdingtheRewindbuttonforlongerthan0.5 seconds
willcause the tape tocontinuallymove in thereverse directionof
play (moving bars will appear on the display panel). To stop
Rewind movement, press the Program Selector button bt and
normalplay will resume.
bt PROGRAMSELECTOR (PROG)
Pressthis button to manuallyreverse tape direction andplaythe
otherside(program) of the cassette. The changeof directionwill
be shown by the “1” or “2” indication on the display panel.
bu EJECT BUTTON ( )
Tapeplaybackis stopped and the cassetteis ejectedby pressing
this button. Radio or CD changer operation will automatically
resumewhen the cassetteis ejected,depending on which mode
was in operation prior to cassette play.
NOTE: Neverleave a cassette engaged in the player when not in
use. Doing so can cause damage to the cassette and/or
mechanism of the unit. Always press the eject button
and remove the cassettebeforeremoving thedetachable
frontpanel.
cl RADIOMONITOR (RM)
This feature allows you to listen to the radio section of the unit
during Fast-Forward or Rewind of the cassette. To activate the
function, press the Radio Monitor button so that the “RM”
indicationappearson the display panel. Deactivate thefunction
by pressing the button again so that “RM” disappears from the
displaypanel.
cm TAPEREPEAT PLAY
When the Repeat button is pressed during tape play, the “RPT”
indicationwill appearonthe display panel andplay ofthe present
tape selection will be repeated until the Repeat Play mode is
canceledbypressing the button again (“RPT”will disappearfrom
the display panel). Repeat Play mode will also be canceled by
activatingtheFast-Forward br, Rewind bs, Program Selectorbt,
or Scan co functions.
cn BLANKSKIP (BS)
WhentheBlankSkipbuttonispressedduringtapeplay(“B.SKIP”
willappear on thedisplaypanel), the tapewillautomatically fast-
forward to the beginning of the next selection whenever a blank
sectionof longer than8 secondson the tape isdetected. To turn
the Blank Skip feature off, press the button again (“B.SKIP” will
disappearfromthe display panel).

co TAPESCAN
When the Scan button is pressed during tape play, the “SCAN”
indicationwillappear on the display paneland thefirst 10seconds
of each selection on the tape will be played in order (“CASS” will
flash on the display panel as the selections are played). When a
desired selection is reached, press the Scan button again and
playofthat selection will continue(“SCAN” willdisappearfrom the
displaypanel). TheScan mode will also becanceled byactivating
theFast-Forward br, Rewindbs, Program Selector bt,orRepeat
Play cm functions.
cp FRONTPANELRELEASE BUTTON(REL)
This button is used to release the mechanism that holds the front
panel to the chassis. To detach the front panel, press the button
so that the left side of the panel is released. Grasp the released
side and pull it off of the chassis. To re-attach the panel, position
theright side ofthe panel inplace first andthen press theleft side
of the panel until the mechanism locks it into place.
NOTES ON USE OF FRONT PANEL
1. Makesurethefront panel is right-side-up when attachingit to
the chassis as it cannot be attached when up-side-down.
2. Donotpress very hard onthe frontpanel whenattaching itto
thechassis. Nomore than light to moderate pressureshould
beneeded.
3. When attaching the front panel, make sure the right side is
correctly engaged before pressing the left side to lock it into
position.
4. When taking thefront panel with you,please use thesupplied
carryingcase toprotectthepanel fromdirtanddamage. Make
sure there is no dust or dirt on the electrical terminals on the
back of the panel as this could cause intermittent operation
orothermalfunctions.

SETTING THE CLOCK
1. Turn the radio on so that the radio frequency or clock time is shown on the display
panel.
2. Press and hold the Select button 3approximately 4 seconds until the time display
begins flashing.
3. While the time display is still flashing, press the Manual Down Tuning button (–) to
adjust the minutes and the Manual Up Tuning button (+) to adjust the hours to the
correct time.
4. When the correct time is shown on the display panel, press the Select button 3again
to return to the normal display.
FREQUENCY STEP SWITCH
This unit is supplied pre-set at the factory for reception of North American radio stations
(10 KHz. channel spacing on AM, 200 KHz. spacing on FM). Use in other areas of the
world may require different channel spacing. A switch on the bottom of the chassis allows
selection of 9 KHz. AM/50 KHz. FM channel spacing. With the 16-pin power connector
un-plugged from the socket at the rear of the chassis, slide the switch to the appropriate
position using a small screwdriver blade.
