1. Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Avantes AvaSphere-50-LS-HAL-12V. This complete new developed
sphere with light source will provide outstanding performance. To get the best of its performance it
perfectly matches all Avantes AvaSpec spectrometers.
Providing up to 160 times more light on your sample for a reflection measurement relative to our
standard reflectance integrating sphere, the AvaSphere-50-LS-HAL-12V is a valuable instrument for
reflection applications. It is a combination of an integrating sphere and a halogen light source. The
sphere provides diffused halogen light on your sample without the losses associated with fiber-optic
coupling. It has a direct collimated SMA-port for collection of the reflection signal with any of our
AvaSpec spectrometers.
It is mostly useful for dark or low reflecting materials and NIR spectral measurements where signal
strength can be limited. It is also very useful for measuring gem stones.
The AvaSphere-50-LS-HAL-12V has an internal diameter of 50mm, a sample port of 10mm and a SMA
terminated reference port. The 5W halogen bulb is stabilized and cooled with forced airflow.
The switch line makes it possible to remotely switch the light source on/off with a TTL signal.

Power LED
The green LED act as status LED for the light source when the power is turned on.

SMA Sample port
The SMA sample port is for collecting the reflected light from the sample port. The SMA sample port
looks directly at the sample port with a collimating lens.
SMA Reference port
The SMA reference port can be used to monitor light variations from the light source.
Sample port
Place the sample you want to measure on the sample port.

2.1 Settings for disable
With the disable function that is present on the I/O connector the user can disable the optical
output of the light source by setting this signal to high-level.
When the light source is used in combination with an AvaSpec spectrometer, interface cable IC-
DB26-AvaSphere-0.5 and AvaSoft, the output can be disabled or enabled by AvaSoft.

3. Changing the light source bulb
1) Disconnect the power cable from the connector.
2) Disconnect the interface cable from the connector (if connected).
3) Remove the 3 torx screws on top with a torx screwdriver (Torx T10).
4) Remove the top from the AvaSphere-50-LS-HAL-12V.
5) Remove the 2 torx screws located next to the bulb with a torx screwdriver (Torx T10).

6) Pull the bulb out gently
7) Disconnect the connector of the bulb from the PCB.
8) Remove the bulb clamp from the removed bulb.
9) Replace the bulb clamp in the same direction onto the new bulb.
10) Place the new bulb inside the AvaSphere-50-LS-HAL-12V.
NOTE: Do not touch the glass of the halogen bulb with bare hands!
11) Reconnect the connector of the bulb into the connector on the PCB.

12) Replace the 2 torx screws aside the bulb.
13) Replace the top back onto the AvaSphere-50-LS-HAL-12V. (avoid cables getting stuck in-
between)
14) Replace the 3 torx screws on top.
15) Reconnect the power connector and interface connector (if applicable).
