1. Introduction
These Application Notes describe the configuration for the Avaya Unified Messenger™ Server
and Cisco CallManager using the Cisco DPA 7610 Voice Mail Gateway. The Cisco DPA 7610
provides digital line emulation and is connected to the UM server via a Dialogic D/82JCT-U
digital line emulation board.
A companion product, the Cisco DPA 7630, provides digital line emulation for the Avaya 7405D
terminals. This DPA also interfaces with the D/82JCT-U, but was not used in this configuration.
The DPA 7610 was intended to integrate CallManager with Octel voice mail systems; these
Application Notes describe how it can be used with Unified Messenger. This device can function
in one of two modes: simple or hybrid. In simple mode, the DPA connects to the voice mail
system and CallManager. In hybrid mode the Nortel Meridian 1 is also connected to the DPA.
These Application Notes describe the simple mode configuration.
In simple mode, the DPA 7610 communicates with the UM server via digital line emulation of
the Nortel Meridian 1 2616 digital sets. The DPA 7610 provides 25 ports: ports 1-24 may be
connected to the UM server (the Dialogic board), and are configured in the CallManager (CM) as
IP Phones. These ports handle all message waiting indication (MWI) signaling and call
processing between CM and the messaging system. Port 25 is used as the communication
channel to CM. This configuration is shown in Figure 1.
The Dialogic D/82JCT-U provides 8 ports; multiple boards may be used to utilize the 24 port
capacity of the DPA. A single board was used in this configuration; therefore ports 9-24 on the
DPA are unused.
By following the procedures in these Application Notes, the Avaya Unified Messenger can be
used as the voice mail server for Cisco CallManager, and UM provides MWI for the Cisco IP
phones.
