Avid Technology ISIS 7000 ISB Use and care manual

This document describes how to identify and replace a failed Avid ISIS Storage Blade (ISB)
Controller Board in an Avid ISIS | 7500 or 7000.
Use this procedure only to replace an ISB Controller board or to repair an ISB that has experienced a
boot problem, due to a faulty Controller board. ISIS | 7500 and 7000 ISB boot issues can manifest in
either of the following ways after a power down or power up event:
• The ISB appears in the Storage Manager or Storage Element page with a Memory Error status
• The ISB will not boot and the LED will remain lit solid amber
nThe “no connection” status does not always indicate a faulty Controller board. Verify the nature of the
failure before replacing the board.
Verifying an ISB Boot Failure Condition
1. Verify that the ISB (IP address) does not respond over the network with the ping command on
both VLANs.
2. Verify that the ISB LED is solid amber (on an i4000 or i8000) or alternating irregularly between
amber and green (i1000 and i2000).
3. Check the ISB boot status using the switch Agent page, as follows:
a. Open the switch Agent page.
b. Click the Advanced tab.
c. Select “Issue shell command” and type the following command in the text box:

i2cio --isb <slot number> -r board_state_str
(For example: i2cio --isb 5 -r board_state_str)
d. Click Run.
The ISB reports the Controller board state as one of the following:
-
boot or unknown — failed ISB Controller Board
-
multi or single — healthy ISB Controller Board
4. If “boot” is displayed, run the shell command again.Afailed ISB Controller Board will consistently show this
state, but a healthy ISB Controller Board displays the “boot” state temporarily during the boot process.
Replacing an ISB Controller Board
If you have a replacement ISB Controller Board, replace the failed one. Return the failed Controller board toAvid. On
the RMA sheet, indicate “ISB Controller Board boot problem.”
Replace a failed ISB Controller board with the correct version for your system, as described in the following table.
Tools Required:
• Medium Phillips screw driver (#2 Phillips)
• Small Phillips screw driver (#1 Phillips)
• Anti static surface
• Anti static wristband

• Two people (recommended)
nIf you have only one failed ISB per Storage Group and you are fully mirrored, you can remove the failed ISB through a
Remove Redistribution process as opposed to the following procedure.
cThe SATAconnector is fragile and requires support when connecting and disconnecting.
cUse anti-static protection to avoid damaging electrical components.
cIf transplanting a Controller board from a donor i1000 or i2000 ISB, the donor ISB must already contain the
appropriate firmware version (matching the other ISBs in use) or be a version 4.0.2 ISB Controller Board (see
the following figure, with the version sticker circled in red). If using an ISB Controller Board from a spare ISB,
upgrade the firmware on the spare ISB before using this replacement procedure. Using an ISB Controller
Board with an incorrect firmware version could result in data loss.
Reference: ISB Controller Board with 4.0.2 Pre-Installed
Before replacing an ISB with a shelf spare:
1. Remove the failed ISB from the Engine.
2. Insert the spare ISB into the same slot and allow it to boot.
3. Check ISIS software version of the spare ISB, and if required, update the software.
4. Remove the spare ISB from the Engine.
To remove the ISB Controller Board from failed ISB or replacement ISB:
1. Use the #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the gray plastic alignment bracket. There are two screws on each side
(four total).
nIn this procedure, the front of the storage blade is closest to the ISB handle. Access to the ISB boards and drives is
from the bottom of the ISB enclosure.

2. Remove the four screws that hold down the plastic slide rails and connect the rear drive to the ISB enclosure. Pull
the rear drive from the enclosure. Label this drive as “rear drive.”
nBe careful to hold the SATA connecting board in the middle to support it.
3. Remove the remaining screws for the plastic slide and remove the slides.
4. Using the #1 Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws holding down the ISB Controller Board to the ISB
enclosure.

5. With the help of another person, pull the sides of the ISB enclosure apart to free the tabs on the sides of the SATA
connecting board. While one person holds the enclosure sides apart, have the second person slide the ISB
Controller Board, the SATA connector, and the front drive a half inch towards the back of the enclosure.
6. While supporting the SATA connecting board, pull the front drive towards the front of the enclosure freeing that
drive from the SATA connecting board.
7. Gently pull the SATA connecting board out of the ISB Controller Board while keeping the sides of the enclosure
spread apart.
nWiggle the SATA connector side to side while pulling to remove it more easily.
8. Disconnect the LED cable from the ISB Controller Board and pull the board from the enclosure.
Installing the New ISB Controller Board
Installation of the replacement ISB is virtually the reverse of removal. However, directions and photos are included
here.

1. Slide the ISB Controller Board into the ISB enclosure with the CPU facing away from you and the SATA
connector facing the rear of the enclosure.
The ISB Controller Board slides into position between metal tabs in the ISB enclosure.
2. Connect the LED status cable with the locking tab facing away from you. The connector is keyed to fit in the
correct orientation.
3. Install the SATA connecting board by carefully aligning the pins. You can wiggle the SATA connecting board to
align the pins.
nDo not install the SATA connecting board into its ISB enclosure slots as this will drop the board too low to install.
4. Push the ISB and SATA connecting board into the front drive.
5. Using the #1 Phillips screw driver, install two screws into the ISB Controller Board.

6. Slide the rear drive into the enclosure with the circuit board you and the SATA connector towards the middle of
the ISB enclosure. Support the connecting board while you gently push the drive SATA connector into the
connecting board.
7. Using the #2 Phillips screwdriver, install the two plastic slides with eight screws. Make sure the screws are flush
with the plastic slides.
8. Reattach the gray plastic alignment bracket with two screws on the plastic slide and one screw on each slide.

Post Install Verification
To check that the ISB Controller Board issue has been corrected:
1. Insert the ISB into the Engine and verify that it boots properly (green LED).
2. Verify that you can ping it on both IP addresses and you are able to access the ISB Web page for that
particular ISB.
3. Make sure the ISB shows a status of “Rectifying,” which is the normal booting status.
When using a version 4.0.2 ISB Controller Board ordered from Avid spares, the ISB will show an
“install needed” status. Install the correct version of firmware on the ISB to clear this status.
nThis firmware install is required even if the firmware versions are already a match, as performance
problems can occur if the ISB is allowed to run for extended periods without this update.
