S6L Control Surface: Replacing the Master Touch
Screen
This document provides instructions for replacing the MTS (Master Touch Screen) in an S6L Control Surface.
Before you Begin
Make sure to do all the following items before beginning the procedure.
1Backup all Show files, presets, and other user data from the system.
2Make sure you have assembled all Required Tools and Items.
3Put on your anti-static wrist band and configure according to its instructions.
4Shut down your system, and disconnect any cables connected to your S6L control surface.
Required Tools and Items
• 1x 2.5mm Hex driver
• 1x #2 Phillips screwdriver
• 1x 9/32 nut driver, or small open-end wrench
• S6L-24C Only: Large towel or similar on which to set the MTS (S6L-24C only)
• Anti-Static wrist strap (not included)
• Small cups or other containers to hold and organize the different types of fasteners as you remove them from the unit
• Table or other work surface strong enough to support the S6L control surface while allowing access to the back.
• Recommended: Hot Glue to secure cables to the new MTS.
What’s Included
• 1x Replacement MTS with pre-installed Backlight cable and Touch-controller cable
Images shown in this guide will differ slightly from your system.
Throughout this procedure, keep the removed screws organized to simplify re-assembly.

Overview of Procedure
Replacing the MTS in an S6L control surface involves the following steps, as detailed throughout the rest of this guide. Be sure to
follow all instructions carefully.
1Prepare the Control Surface
• Remove the S6L Back Covers (all systems)
• Disconnect Light Cables (S6L-24C only)
2Remove the MTS
• Free the MTS from the chassis, then disconnect its cables and remove the old MTS
3Install the New MTS
• Connect cables for the MTS
• Install the new MTS in the chassis
4Confirm Installation
5Complete the Installation
• Reassemble the control surface (back cover and other components)

Make sure to do all the following items before beginning the procedure.
1Make sure you have assembled all Required Tools and Items, and that your work area is clear of any debris.
2Put on your anti-static wrist band and configure according to its instructions.
3Shut down your system, and disconnect any cables connected to your S6L control surface.
Prepare the S6L Control Surface
Prepare the S6L control surface by removing the lower and upper back covers. The steps required to remove the back cover vary
depending on the model of S6L control surface.
D-Series S6L-24D, 32D, and 48D
C-Series S6L-24C
D-Series
To remove the lower back cover from S6L-24D, 32D, or 48D:
1Using a 2.5mm Hex driver, remove the fasteners that secure the back cover to the S6L chassis and set the screws aside.
• S6L-24D uses 8 fasteners
• S6L-32D uses 10 fasteners
• S6L-48D uses 12 fasteners
Throughout this procedure, keep the removed screws organized to simplify re-assembly.

2After removing the fasteners try sliding the back cover off the chassis by pushing it down with your hands and simultaneously
pulling the cover away from the chassis. If the cover does not slide freely, do the following:
• Try inserting a small flathead screwdriver along its upper edge as shown in Figure 1 and try to work one side free and then
the other.
• To be able to remove the back cover without risking scratching the chassis, first remove both end caps. (At minimum, one End
Cap needs to be loosened enough to let you remove the top cover later in these instructions. If you remove either (or both) of
the End Caps completely, carefully disconnect the LED power cable before moving the cap(s) away from the chassis.)
• Next, use a #2 Phillips screwdriver and remove one of the small retaining brackets.
3Slide the panel away from the control surface, and set the panel aside.

4Using a 2.5mm Hex driver, remove the upper back cover by removing its fasteners and then lifting the cover away.
• S6L-24D uses 13 fasteners
• S6L-32D uses 16 fasteners
• S6L-48D uses 22 fasteners
5Proceed to Remove the MTS.
C-Series
To remove the covers from S6L-24C:
1Using a 2.5 mm Hex driver, loosen or remove both the right and left End Caps by loosening the 7 fasteners securing the caps to
the chassis.
At minimum, one End Cap needs to be loosened enough to let you remove the top cover later in these instructions. If you remove
either (or both) of the End Caps completely, carefully disconnect the LED power cable before moving the cap away from the
chassis.

2Using a 2.5mm Hex driver, remove the 8 fasteners that secure the back edge of the back cover to the S6L-24C chassis and set
the screws aside.
3After removing the fasteners try sliding the back cover off the chassis by pushing it down with your hands and simultaneously
pulling the cover away from the chassis.
4Slide the panel away from the control surface, and set the panel aside.
5Using a 2.5mm Hex driver, remove the 4 fasteners that secure the top cover to the control surface.
6Set a large towel or similar across the upper modules of the control surface (CKM, MTS, MLM) to protect them.
7Carefully lift the top cover off the chassis and set it face down on the towel you placed on the surface, being careful to not stretch
or stress the cables connected to the light sockets.
8Proceed to Disconnect Light Cables.

Disconnect Light Cables
(S6L-24C Only)
Before removing the SBC tray you must label and disconnect the two Light cables connected to the Top Panel.
To disconnect the Light cables:
1On S6L-24C disconnect the cables at the connectors shown below, then set the front panel aside.
2Proceed to Remove the MTS.
Remove the MTS
The MTS must first be freed from the chassis and set face down on the control surface to allow access to the LVDS and other cables.
To remove the MTS:
1Set a towel, blanket, or other padded material on top of the modules below the MTS.
2Using a 2.5 mm hex driver, remove all fasteners securing the MTS to the chassis. Original units had 8 fasteners, later units 6.

3Pushing gently from the back, carefully free the MTS from the chassis and set it face down on the towel or other padded surface
you placed over the module directly below it.
• Be very careful to not stretch any cables (they are long enough to allow the MTS to be tilted forward and set face down).
• 24C Only: Be careful to not set the MTS on the chassis Top Cover you removed earlier.
Disconnect the Old MTS
The MTS has three cable connections:
• Multi-strand Backlight cable (1in Figure 11)
• Touch-controller cable (2in Figure 11)
• LVDS (3in Figure 11)
Your replacement MTS includes new Backlight and Touch-controller cables pre-installed. As shown in the following instructions,
you must detach the LVDS cable from the old MTS, then disconnect the Backlight and Touch-controller cables from within the
chassis and remove them along with the old MTS.
Follow the instructions below carefully to make sure to correctly replace and connect cables.
To disconnect the LVDS cable from the old MTS:
Disconnect the LVDS cable (3in Figure 12) from the back of the old MTS. Carefully chip off any glue that secures the cable to
its connector, and note how the cable is oriented (to simplify connection to the new MTS later).

To disconnect the Backlight and Touch-controller cables:
1Leaving it connected to the MTS, disconnect the other end of the Backlight cable by doing the following:
• Making note of the location of its port, disconnect the other end of the Backlight cable from its connection to the GPIO board.
This cable (7070-30576-00) is connected to port J12 on the GPIO board.
2Leaving it connected to the MTS, disconnect the other end of the Touch-controller cable by doing the following:
• Making note of the location of its port, disconnect the other end of the Touch-controller cable from the SBC motherboard. This
cable (7070-30616-01) is connected to port USB2_9 on Portwell SBCs, port X16 (lower row of pins) on Congatec SBCs, or
port P24L on Emerson SBCs (refer to Figure 12).
To identify which type of SBC you have:
Portwell (2022 and later control surfaces) The SBC heat sink is mounted closer to the center of the board. In addition, some
ports are labeled with text and numbers (such as “USB2_9”), and some by port designation (such as “J1”).
Congatec (2019 and later control surfaces) The SBC heat sink is mounted closer to the back of the control surface. Some units
included a purple plastic shroud, most units did not.
Emerson (2015 and later control surfaces) SBC the heat sink is closer to the front (operator side) of the control surface. All
units included a plastic shroud.
3After disconnecting the cables, use a 9/32 nut driver to remove the screw that secures the LVDS cable to the MTS.
4You can now remove the old MTS, pulling the old power and Touch-controller cables out at the same time (make sure cables are
free of any obstructions).
5Proceed to Connect and Install the New MTS.

Connect and Install the New MTS
Your replacement MTS includes new Backlight and Touch-controller cables pre-installed. These cables connect to the GPIO and
SBC boards, respectively. Your existing LVDS cable is connected to the new MTS.
To connect and install the new MTS:
1Carefully remove the new MTS from its packaging and set it on your padded surface on top of the console (orient and place it
the same as when you removed the old MTS).
2Connect the Backlight cable (7070-30576-00) to its port (J12) on the GPIO board.
3Connect the Touch-controller cable (7070-30616-01) to its port on the SBC, as appropriate for your model SBC:
4Connect the LVDS cable to its port on the new MTS (3in Figure 12).
5Use a 9/32 nut driver to replace the screws that secure each cable to the MTS.
6Proceed to Confirm Installation.
Confirm Installation
To confirm a successful installation:
1Being careful to keep cables from getting bent or pinched, place the new MTS into its slot in the control surface chassis. Do not
secure it yet.
2Power on the S6L control surface and E6L engine.
3Check that the MTS operates and that the system boots up as normal.
4When you have confirmed a successful installation, proceed to Complete the Installation.

After confirming that all MTS cables are fully seated and connected properly, apply a small amount of hot glue to each connector
to secure the cable in place.

Complete the Installation
After confirming a successful installation of the new MTS, re-install the upper and lower back covers to complete the installation.
For details and illustrations, refer to the earlier instructions for disassembly.
To reassemble the S6L-24D, 32D, or 48D control surface:
1Secure the new MTS to the chassis using the fasteners you removed earlier.
2Making sure to orient it correctly, re-install the upper back cover on the control surface and secure it with the fasteners you re-
moved earlier (refer to Figure 4).
3Making sure to orient the back cover correctly, slide the cover back into position on the control surface.
4Reinstall the fasteners to secure the lower back cover to the S6L chassis.
Your S6L control surface is now ready for use.
