1 Caution
Take precaution NOT to do any of the following
When lifting the machine, do NOT apply any pressure to the outer aluminum profile wall. Only lift
the machine by the inner steel frame. Refer to figure A:
Fig. A
Do NOT at any time clean the Cal-Vis-2 or the linear rails. If you try to clean them you will
damage them. Also, do NOT touch the gold encoder strips. Touching them will damage them.
Refer to figure B:
Fig. B
Do NOT tilt the heads while the 100x objective is on. It will crash into the sample.

2 Introduction
This manual discusses the detailed unpacking and setup for the AXOSTEP-APM-65H Panel Mapper
System. Please read this entire manual before attempting to operate this machine. See the AXOSTEP-
APM-65H Hardware Manual for installation procedures not covered in this manual. Contact Axometrics if
you need assistance.
The AXOSTEP-APM-65H is a system for measuring the polarization parameters of samples of up to 65”
diagonal in a laboratory environment. The AXOSTEP-APM-65H consists of an AxoStep PSG and PSA
mounted to a fixture that allows ±30° tilting and ±90° rotation of the sensor around a common point on the
sample. A standard AxoStep Control Unit and PC control the AxoStep, the APM turret, and the included
XY table.

2. Remove the top panel.
3. Remove the top support braces on top of the machine.
4. Proceed to remove the rest of the walls.
5. CAREFULLY remove the plastic box and samples inside the crate. See figure 1.
Fig. 1
3.2 Moving the machine from the crate to installation site
1. Remove the foil bag from the machine with the machine on the base of the crate.
2. Lift the machine off the crate being careful not to hit the wheels under the machine.
Do NOT lift the machine by the exterior aluminum profile frame.
3. Once in the building, remove the stretch wrap plastic.
4. Remove the bags of dessicant.
5. Clean the machine (Do NOT clean the Cal-Vis 2 or rails)
3.3 Hardware Removal
1. Open the bi-fold doors and remove the rails and hanger brackets inside.
2. Remove the red shipping bracket from the front of the sample holder.
3. Remove the top two middle panels on the back of the machine. Remove the red shipping bracket
from the back of the sample holder.
4. REMOVE ALL RED SHIPPING BRACKETS
5. Remove the shipping bracket and locking bolt on the top and bottom turret. See figures 5 and 6.
6. Remove the bolts that hold each of the 3 electronics drawers in place. Refer to figure 2.
7. Remove the hardware dongle from the back of the Master PC and install in the front. Refer to
figures 3 and 4.

3.5 Level the machine
1. Once the machine is located in place on the fab floor, place a steel plate under each leveling leg
and lower the legs until they just touch the plate. See figure 10.
2. Put a level on the granite and adjust the leveling legs up and down until the granite is level left to
right and front to back.
Move the brackets (QTY 6) away from
the granite
Loosen the lateral pusher (QTY 8) until it is
no longer touching the granite
Loosen the set screw first then lower the

4 Operator Station
4.1 Mounting the monitor
1. Route the monitor cables through the cable hole on the front panel and plug them in the monitor.
2. Now using the 4 screws in the back of the monitor, mount the monitor to the panel. Refer to
figures 11 and 12.
Fig. 11 Fig.12
4.2 Mounting the Signal Tower
1. Install the signal tower on top of the machine just above the monitor.
2. Once the signal tower is mounted, plug the connector to the signal tower cable. Refer to figure
13.
Monitor cables
Do not over tighten the screws in
the back of the monitor

8
Fig.13
4.3 Mounting the Keyboard Tray
1. Install the keyboard just below the monitor at the bottom of the panel. Refer to figure 14.
Fig.14
4.4 Installing the Mouse and Keyboard
1. Pull the mouse and key board cables through the hole on the monitor panel.
2. Run the cables through the beta duct to the USB cables that are sticking out of the beta duct.
Once there connect the mouse and key board cables to the USB cables and tuck them in the
beta duct. Refer to figures 15 and 16.

4.5 Install Focus EMO-SI Cable to DIN Panel
On systems with Focus stages, install the Focus EMO-SI cable running from the Focus MCU to the Din
Panel. Refer to SCHEM-0203A and LAYOUT-0100C in the wiring diagrams package.
First, install the provided wire labels (W2.9 for red, DC0V for black) and krimp the provided ring terminals
onto the two wires.
Next, install the cable into the Focus MCU. See figure 15.
Next, connect the wires on row 3 on the large electrical panel. See figure 16. The SI OUT TO FOCUS
MCU) W2.9 wire will be jumpered with W2.9 wires for MCU TT and MCU XY. The DC0V wire will be
jumpered with the other 2 DC0V wires.

5 Tunable Light Source
5.1 Light Source Installation
1. To remove the Tunable Light Source (TLS) there are mounting bolts that are holding the TLS in
the drawer. Remove the four bolts with a 5mm Allen Wrench. Refer to figure 19.
2. Once you have installed the Lamp, slide the TLS in the drawer.
3. Plug in the Power cable that is labeled LIGHT SOURCE PWR.
4. Connect the Serial cable.
5. Slide the Light Source up against the fan shroud, so it will properly pull the heat from the TLS.

6 Pneumatic and Power
6.1 Pneumatic
1. Connect 12mm CDA input tubing to the machine. Make sure the pneumatic disconnect is open to
allow air flow. Refer to figures 20 and 21.
2. The regulators have been set to 0.5 MPa at the Axometrics facility. However, if pressure
adjustments need to be made, raise the regulator knob and turn CW or CCW to raise or lower the
pressure. Make sure to lower and “lock” the adjustment knob once the digital pressure gauge
reads 0.5 MPa. Refer to figure 22.
3. Check to make sure the granite is floating in range on the scale. Refer to figure 23.

7 Miscellaneous Items
7.1 Rail Assembly
1. Install the Rail Hanger Bracket on the right side of the system. Attach the ends on the rails with
M3x8 flat socket cap screws and hang the rails on the hanger bracket. Refer to figure 25.
2. When the hole plate is not in use, hang it in the back on the hanger. Refer to figure 26.
3. Starting with the closest objective mounting position: the first slot is for the 5x, second is for the
10x and the third is for the 20x.
