1.1. DVK- 2 base- kit
The DVK- 2 is designed as quick start solut ion for the developm ent of applicat ions wit h
AXSEM m icro- con tr oller s and AXSEM radio- ch ips. The D VK- 2 base - kit is the
developm ent plat form for applicat ions based on the AX8 0 5 2 F1 x x m icr o- cont roller
fam ily. Wit h the available radio add- on - kit s it becom es t he ideal plat form for radio
perform ance evaluat ion and radio syst em developm ent. The D VK- 2 is com pat ible wit h
AX- Ra dioLab, AX- M icr oLab and AxCode::Blocks developm ent software for t he PC.
The DVK- 2 com es wit h:

For evaluat ion of AXSEM radio I C a variet y of add- on- k it s are available. A radio add-
on- kit consist s of a pair of radio m odules ( and depending on r egion, frequency ,
dist r ibu tor a pair of an t ennas) . Depending on t he radio product t he kit can consist of t wo

The left m odule has a TX/ RX port and t he right m odule a TX/ RX port w it h SMA connect or
and a single ended TX- only port wit hout SMA connect or.

2 . AXDBG Debug Ada pt er Overview
The AXD BG debug adapt er is t he interface bet ween t he PC and t he m ainboards. I t can
be used for program m ing and debugging the AX8 0 5 2 F1 xx fam ily of m icro- cont rollers. I t
interfaces on t he com put er side wit h low level drivers and t he AXSD B soft ware interface,
w hich is t h en used by ot h er AX SEM software product s. The AXSD B can also be used in
m ass product ion wit h t he scriptable AXSDB software.
The AXD BG has the following int erfaces and indicat ors:
• AX debug link RJ45 connect or
• m ini USB PC int erface
• LED red indicat ing the debug link is act ive, MCU in debug m ode
• LED green indicating a program is executed on t he MCU
• Opt ional m odule con nect or s ( not used by act ual AXSEM soft war e pr du ct s)

3 . M a in Board Overview ( MB)
A DV K- 2 m ainboard is the core of t he DV K- 2 developm ent syst em . I t uses an
AX8 0 5 2 F1 0 0 as a v er sat ile ult r a- low - pow er m icr o- controller. The m ainboard is designed
to evaluate AXSEM radio I C as well as being a plat form for code developm ent and
test ing.
The DVK- 2 m ainboard is equipped w it h t he follow ing com pon en t s:

4.1. Bat t eries
Three AA bat t eries can be insert ed on the bott om side of the DVK- 2 m ainboard. The
polarity is indicat ed on t he pict ure below . The pow er swit ch t oggles bet ween bat t ery
powered and debug- link powered operat ion. There is no OFF posit ion if bat teries are
insert ed and the debug- link is connect ed.

4.2. Modules
One radio module can be connected t o t he m ain board. The D VK- 2 m odules have t o be
connect ed t o the m ain board wit h t he SMA connector facing outside.

Different types of antennas can be used wit h t he AXSEM radio m odules. The kit s com e
without antenna but any 50 Ohm ant enna designed for a frequency m at ching t he radio
m odule and being equipped wit h a m ale SMA connector can be used. Be aware that
ant enna perfor m ance can vary a lot bet ween different m akes of ant ennas.

Note: AX- MicroLab and AX- RadioLAB use t he AX8 0 5 2 I DE software package in the
background. Therefore the AX8 0 5 2 I DE soft ware package has to be inst alled and

Make sure that t he AX8 0 5 2 I D E software is inst alled before connect ing t he AX SD B t o
t he com put er and before inst allin g t he ot her AXSEM soft ware. Ot herwise you m ay
experience difficult ies in inst alling t he driver lat er. AX- RadioLa b, AX - Ra dioLab5 1 or
AX- M icr oLab m ay be inst alled lat er, depending on t he users int ent ions.
All necessary software can be downloaded at www .axsem .com .
St ep 2: Connect t he AXD BG via the USB cable t o t he com put er . Since t he driv er is
already inst alled t he com put er should report 2 “ USB Serial Conver ter s” in y our Dev ice
Manager.
St ep 3: Connect a D VK- 2 m ainboard via t he blue RJ45 cable t o t he AXDBG debug
adapter.

AX- M icr oLab is a great st art ing point for m icro- controller code developm ent wit h the
AX8 0 5 2 F1 xx fam ily of m icr o- controllers. I t creat es a fram ew ork of code for different
applicat ions and helps t o configure the funct ions of t he m icro- controller.
AX- M icr oLab has a “ DVK- 2 Boar d” but t on ( see ar row ) t o cr eat e a DVK- 2 com pat ible
configurat ion quickly. For det ails look in t he AX- M icroLab docum ent at ion, which is
available at www .axsem .com .

The DVK- 2 m ainboards com e wit h a pre- installed software for t est s wit h DV K- 2 radio
add- on m odules. The pr e- inst alled software recognises m ost AXSEM radio a dd- on
m odules and aut om at ically st art s t est ing packet er ror rat e. One D VK- 2 m ainboard is
program m ed w it h a t ransm it ter t he ot her w it h a receiver. Just plug in bat teries, at t ach
radio m odules and set the power supply switch t o bat tery. For longer range use
ant ennas. The tr ansm it t er indicat es t he num ber of t he last t ransm it ted packet , w hile t he
receiver indicat es t he packet error rat e ( PER), the RSSI and t he frequency offset . Walk
around and check out for t he great dist ance you can achieve.
N ote : The SW does not a ccur a te ly sense AX5 0 4 3 m odule s for 4 3 3 and 1 6 9 MHz
an d m odule s w it h 4 8 MH z TCXO. For t hose m odu les it is r ecom m e nded t o use
AX- Ra dioLab.
The pre- inst alled SW r unnin g on the m ain boards can be downloaded from the AXSEM
web- page www .axsem .com . Open slave.cbp in Ax Code::block s to download t he
receiver and m ast er.cbp to download t he t ransm it t er. The proj ect m ain .cbp allow s t o
t oggle bet ween t ransm it ter and receiver by pressing SW4 du rin g pow er - up.
The radio param et ers of t his software cannot be changed. It is recom m ended to use AX-
RadioLab or AX- Ra dioLa b5 1 for in dept h t esting. Wit h AX 5 0 4 2 and AX5 0 3 1 we
recom m end AX- Para m Calc wit h AX - Ea sy _ Pack et as developm ent and t est ing
plat form .

AX- Ra dioLab is t he m ost advanced developm ent t ool for SRD radio applicat ions. I t
offer s a v ar iet y of t ransm it ter and receiver options such as
• Periodic t ransm ission of packet s t im ed wit h t he RC oscillat or of t he AX 5 0 4 3
• Periodic t ransm ission of packet s t im ed wit h t he 32 kHz XTAL oscillat or of t he MCU

• Synchronous tr ansm it and r eceiv e wit h program m able wak e- up int erval

On top of t his AX- RadioLa b also allows to configure t he packet form at , as well as the
PHY.
Since AX- Ra dioLa b is a source code generator t he dev eloper inher it s t he ent ir e C- code
necessar y t o r un his applicat ion. This m ak es radio code developm ent quick and reliable.
AX- Ra dioLab also est im at es t he power consum pt ion of t he radio device. For m ost
m odes t he AX8 0 5 2 F1 0 0 power consum pt ion is negligible. Average and peak current s
are indicat ed for t ransm it t er and receiver.
