VeryfewmodellerscanbeunfamiliarwiththeNieuport
rangeofveestruttedfighteraircraftofWW1,andthe
Nieuport11istheonethatgotthemallstarted.Although
originallydesignedasaprewarracingplane,shewas
developedintooneoftheseveraltypesthatbroughtabout
theendofthe‘FokkerScourge’,averydarkeraforallied
airmen.BuiltbothinFrance,andunderlicenceinItaly,
andusedbymostofthealliednationsarmedforces,there
aremanycolourschemesavailabletousasmodellers,and
manyminorvariationsindetailtoenableeachmodelto
beslightlydifferent.Youcouldevenbuildherasthemore
powerfulN16,asusedbytheBelgianforces,although,
becauseofthebiggerengine,theydidhavethehabitof
divingheadlongiftheenginecut.
THEMODEL
Aswithothermodelsinthisrange,theN11isnot
intendedasanexactscalemodel.Ithasbeensimplified
slightly,sothatwhileitstillcoveysthe‘feel’ofthefull
sizeaircraft,itremainseasytobuildandpleasanttofly.
Designedtousearelativelyinexpensivepowersetup,
withminiservostokeeptheweightdown,sheisanideal
entryintoslightlylargerelectricpoweredscalemodels,
withoutinvolvinghugeexpenseforthebuilder.

WINGS
Toeasethebuilderintothismodel,thebottomwingsare
wherewestartconstruction.Theyarequiteeasytobuild,
andwon’ttakeuptoomuchspaceoncecompleted.Make
uptheentirestrutandwingplatesfromthealuminium
stripsuppliedsothattheyarereadilytohandwhenyou
needthem.Roughenallgluingareaswithcoarsesand
papertoprovideakey.
BOTTOMWING
Begintheactualconstructionbypinningdown,overthe
plan,thelowertrailingedgestrip,thewingtip,thespar
andtheleadingedge,gluingasrequired.Makeuptherib
doublerbynotchingittoacceptthestrutplateand
EPOXYthestrutrib,strutplateanddoublertogetheras
indicatedontheplan.Now,usingtheribanglegaugeto
setuptherootrib,glueallthewingribsinplace.Withthe
exceptionoftherootrib,allribsshouldbeverticaltothe
buildingboard.Glueinplacethe1/8”balsatipgusset,
andthe1/8”plymountingplatesandallowtodry
thoroughlybeforeproceeding.
Removethewingfromtheboardandtrimtherearofthe
lowertrailingedgetofollowthelineoftheribs,before
pinningthewingbackovertheplan.Addtheupper
trailingedgestripandthe1/16”x3/16”capstrips,and
onceagainallowtodry.Repeattheprocessforthe
oppositewingpanel,andthentrimandsandthewingsto
shape.Notethatthewingtipistrimmeddowntomate
accuratelywiththetrailingedge.Thelocatingdowels
maybeaddednow,orleftuntilafterthewingpanelsare
covered.
TOPWING
Pleasenotethattheaileronisbuiltintegralwiththetop
wing,onlybeingseparatedafterthepanelshavebeen
trimmedandsandedtoshape.
Aswiththebottomwings,pindowntheleadingedge,
lowertrailingedgestrip,bottomsparsandwingtip
pieces,gluingasrequired.Alsopindownandgluethe
centresectioncutoutlaminations.Laminateup,andtrim
toshapethebalsaandplywingjoinerbraceandglueit
securelyagainstthelowermainspar.Glueallthemain
ribsinplace;ensuringthattheyareupright,butDONOT
addtheaileronribsatthisstage.Gluethetopsparsin
position,followedbytheverticalgrainsparwebpieces
andthe1/8”balsafalsetrailingedge.Addthetipgusset,
hatchblocks,plymountingplates,doublerandwingbolt
supportblock,andthenSPOTGLUEtheaileronleading
edgetothefalsetrailingedge,whilegluingitsecurelyto
theailerontip.Now,glueinplacetheaileronribsand
hornsupportpiece,andallowtodrycompletely.

Removethewingfromtheboard,andtrimthetrailing
edgestrip,thefalsetrailingedge,theaileronleading
edge,wingcutoutblockandthewingboltblocktofollow
thelineofribs,beforepinningbackdownagainand
addingtheuppertrailingedgeandcapstrips.Allowto
drythoroughlybeforetrimmingandsandingtoshape.
DONOTaddthestrutplatesyet!!!!
Positionthebuiltwingpanelaccuratelyagainstthe
drawingfortheoppositewingpanel,pinitsecurelyin
place,andbuildtheotherwingontoit,followingthe
sameprocedureasbefore.Oncethiswinghasalsobeen
trimmedandsanded,thestrutplatesanddoublersshould
befirmlygluedtotheliteplystrutribs.Justremember
thattheseonesgounderthewing.Makeuptheservo
hatches,providesomewherefortheservoleadstorun
throughthewingandcarefullyandaccuratelydrillthe
holesfortheselftappingscrewsandnylonboltthatwill
retainthetopwing.Nowyoucancuttheaileronsfrom
therestofthewing,shapetheleadingedgeasshown,and
preparethemforhinging.Yourwingsarenowreadyto
cover,havetheaileronshingedandthecontrolhorns
fitted.Fittheservos,andwiththeaileronsheldlevelwith
thewings,makeupthepushrods.Useazbendinthe
threadedrodattheservooutputarm,andaclevisatthe
controlhornend.
SERVOLEADS
Ihavefoundithelpfultousesocket‐to‐socketextensionY
leadsinthewingsofthistypeofmodel,andaplug‐to‐
plugextensionleadfromthereceiver.BymountingtheY
leadsocket,intowhichtheextensionleadwillplug,just
proudofthelowercentresection(topwing),itispossible
toruntheextensionleaduponeofthestruts,disguisedas
afuellineorsimilar,andavoidtheneedforahatchinthe
centresection.Nodoubtyou’llusewhateversystem
you’reusedto,butthisoneisworthatry.Evenifthere
shouldn’tactuallybeafuelline,itwillstilllookbetter
thanaservolead.Theservosshouldbefixedtothe
hatcheswithservotape,orscrewedtohardwoodblocks
gluedtothehatches.Theoutputarmshouldextend
throughthehatchandthereshouldbenobindingin
operation.
TAILSURFACES
Thesearesimplybuiltovertheplan,fromtheprecut
partsandstripbalsa.Sandoverallandroundoffallthe
edges.Bendupthewireelevatorjoiner,andcarefullydrill
theholesintowhichthejoinerwillfit.Cutagroovein
eachelevator,toenablethejoinertositflush,andepoxy
theelevatorsontothejoiner.Makesurethattheymatch
thewidthofthetailplane,andthattheyarebothlevel
witheachother.Gluetheplyhornsinplaceafter
covering.
FUSELAGE
Thefuselageofthismodelisbuiltastwoseparate
sections,afrontandarear,whicharethenjoined,since
thisisthesurestwayofeasilyproducingastraight
structure.Anabsolutelyvitalingredientofthistypeof
model.
Beginassemblybybuildingthetworearframesoverthe
plan.Havingbuiltonesideframe,allowittodrybefore
removingfromtheboard,turningitoverandbuildingthe
secondframeontopofthefirst.Usesomeclearpolythene
sheetbetweenthetwoframestopreventthemstickingto
eachother,andensurethatbothframesareidentical.
Now,onceagainworkingovertheplan,jointhetwo
framesusingthecrossbraces,andthepieceof3/16”balsa
thatthetailskidfitsinto.Makeeveryefforttoensurethat
thestructureisnotonlystraight,butalsototallysquare.
Allowthisassemblytodrycompletelybeforeaddingthe
1/16”balsafilltotheunderside,andthetwo1/16”
pushrodexitpieces.Evenifyouintendtouseclosedloop
typecontrollinks,stillfittheexitpartssincetheyadda
lotofstrengthforverylittleweight.Setthisassemblyto
oneside,andmoveontothefrontsectionofthefuselage.
Startbyjoiningthe3/16”balsapartsthatmakeupthetwo
basicsidesheetsandallowthemtodry.Makingsurethat
thestructureremainsperfectlystraightandsquare,join
thesidesheetpartsusingformersF1A,F1B,F2andthe
3/16”plymotorplate.Takeespecialcaretogetthemotor
platetherightwayup.Leftsidethrustbuiltintoyour
modelwillnothelpitsflyingqualitiesintheleast.Allow
thegluetodry,andthenaddthepartsF3andF4,
completewiththetriangularreinforcingblocks.Bendup
anddrilltheduralc/sstruts,drillthestrutplates,andbolt
thestrutssecurelyinplace.Lockoffallthenutswitha
spotofCAtoensuretheydon’tcomelooseagainatalater
date.Now,workingovertheplantoaidaccurate
alignment,jointhefrontandrearfuselagehalves.
So,nowthatyouhavesomethingresemblingafuselage,
addthe3/32”lowerfillpieces,formersD1‐D7andthe
1/8”x1/4”rearpiece.Followthisbythe1/16”sheet
deckingandthestringers.ThestringersbuttagainstD3
andthe1/8”x1/4”piece,thelatterbeingshapedtofollow
thelinesofthestringers.Sandthestructureoverall,before

drillingtheholesfortheu/cbindingsandthelowerwing
retainingscrews.Itwillresultinaneaterjobifthebottom
ofthefuselageiscoveredbeforetheu/clegsareboundin
placeandboundandsolderedtotheaxle.Althoughno
u/cfairingsareshown,scrapbalsamaybeusedtofairthe
legs.
COWL
StartbylaminatinguptheC1parts,andwhilethisdries
gluethe1/32”plyaroundC2andC3.MakesurethatC2
andC3aligncorrectlyoryou’llendupwithavery
lopsidedcowl.Gluethelaminatedsectionontothemain
cowlandthentrimandsandtoshape.Now,tackgluethe
cowlaccuratelytothefuselage,andgluethefairing
blockstothecowl.NotethattheyareONLYgluedtothe
COWL,nottothefuselage.Removethecowlandtrim
andsandthecowlfairingstoshape.Thoroughlyprime
andsealthecowlreadyforpainting.Thecowlmayeither
begluedorscrewedtothefinishedmodel.
FINISHING
Althoughweallhaveourownpreferredcovering
method,doensurethatyoudon’taddtoomuchweightat
thisstage.ThenewmattcoveringfromSolarfilmwould
beagoodcompromisebetweenweightanddurability,
but‘Tex’coveringsareontheheavyside.Modelling
enamelsareagoodfinishingmedium,buttrytolimit
theirusetoavoidaddingweight.
SinceWilliamsBrotherssupplyexcellent1/6scalemodel
gunsandpilotfigures,evenwheelsifyoudon’tmindthe
weight,obtainingagoodlevelofscaledetailiseasy.
However,alwaysbearinmindthatalittledetailcansoon
addalotofweight.Weightisthekeytosuccesswith
electricpoweredmodels‐thelessweight,themorelikely
youaretosucceed.
WHEELASSEMBLY
BalsaCore
Laminatethe1/8”thickbalsacoretothe¼”thickbalsa
coreusingCA.
BALSAPLYSANDWICH
Gluingtheplysidesonthe3/8“balsacoremakesthebasis
forthewheels.Usethebrasshubforalignment.Epoxythe
hubsinplaceandaddthe1/8”plywoodreinforcingcollar
tobothsides.Allowtocure.
TIRES
Next,CAgluetheneoprenecordingtogethertofroma
“tire”.UsethinCAsparinglyastheCAbondsvery
aggressivelytotherubber.PresstheCAwettedends
togetherforaninstantbond.
ATTACHTIRES
ThenattachthetirestothewheelsandCAinplace.Athin
beadofCAaroundtherimmakesforasecuretire.
MAKEPAPERCARDCONES
Paperconesarecutoutandawedgeiscutoutbymaking
cutstothecentrealongonewedgeofthespokes.Usea
ballpointpentoscoreeachlineonthebacktomakean
impressionof“spokes”Itishelpfultodothisoperation
onapapertabletsothatthepenmakesagoodcrease.
Foldthepaperalongthecreaselinestoexaggeratethe
raisedlines.Closethepapercutoutstoformconesand
tapethejointinsidethecone.
FITCONESTOWHEELS
Theinsideconesmaynowbeattachedtothewheels.The
outsideconesmaybeattachedatthispointifwheel
collarsaretobeused.Alternatively,afterinstallingthe
wheelsonthelandinggear,awashermaybesolderedto
holdthewheelinplaceandthentheconeisattached.This
methodmakesaverynicescaleappearance.
ASSEMBLY
Withthetopwinginverted,carefully,andaccurately,
positionthefuselageoverit.Markthepositionsofthe
wingmountingscrewsandbolt,anddrilltheappropriate
holes.Carefullymeasurethelowerwingscrewpositions,
drillthemandfitthewingstothefuselage.Makeupthe
interplanestrutsoverthefullsizedrawing,andboltthem
totherelevantstrutplates.Thiswillpullthedihedralinto
thebottomwing,butmakesurethatyouhaven’talso
pulledanytwistintothewings.Nowusethisassemblyas
aguidetoalignmentwhilegluingthetailplanefirmlyin
place.Ensurethattheallmovingrudderisaccurately
aligned,butalsothatthehingesarebothgluedand
pinnedforsecurity.Thelastthingyouneedistoolose
yourruddermidflight.Makeuptheradiohatch,using
yourfavouriteretainingmethod,completetheradio
installationandstandbackandadmireyourhandiwork.

FLYING
Incommonwithallmodelaircraft,andshortnosed
biplanesinparticular,ensurethatshebalancesjust
SLIGHTLYnosedownwhensupportedatthepoint
shown.Thereisnosurerwayofdestroyingyourmodel
thantoattempttoflyherinatail‐heavystate.
Openthethrottlegradually,holdinginsomeupelevator
untilsheismoving,andallowhertopickupspeed.Ease
offtheelevatorasherspeedincreases,andbereadyto
correctanyswingwithrudder.Onceshehasattained
speed,graduallyfeedinsomemoreupelevatoruntilshe
liftsoff.Allowhertoclimbawaysteadily,anddon’t
attempttorushthings.Onceyouhavemadesomeheight
andtrimmedherout,she’sallyourstohavefunwith.
Loops,stallturnsandevenanotverycrisprollareall
withinhercapabilities,sojustenjoyher.However,atall
times‐BEWARETHEHUNINTHESUN.
