Thefirstsingle‐seatscoutproductoftheHalberstadter
Flugzeug‐Werkewasthe100h.p.Mercedes‐enginedD.I
oflate1915.Thiswasanorthodoxslab‐sided,two‐bay
aircrafttypicalofitsperiod,withaflush‐typeradiator
locatedinthestarboardsideofthecenter‐sectionpanel
andaclawbrakemountedinthecenteroftheaxle.The
D.Iwassubsequentlymodifiedbyinstallinga120h.p.
ArgusAs.IIenginewhichwascompletelycowledin
behindacar‐typeradiator,withanungainlyexhaust
manifoldejectingoverthetopwing.In1916the
aircraftwasagainre‐enginedwiththe120h.p.Mercedes
D.II,andinthisformitwentintoproductionastheDII
tosupplementtheFokkerDtypebiplanes,whichwere
thenreplacingtheobsolescentFokkermonoplanes.The
HalberstadtD.IIwasaneatlittleaeroplaneanditstwo
baywingstructuremadeitexceedinglystrong.
RelativelyfewD.IIsandD.IIIswerebuilt,thoughsome
wereconstructedunderlicensebyHannoversche
Waggonfabrik.ThereportoftheInter‐Allied
CommissionaftertheArmisticerecordedthat100
HalberstadtD.IIandD.IIIswereattheFrontinJanuary
1917.Theyweresuppliedinitiallytothe
KampfeinsitzerkommandosservingwiththeFl.AN.
reconnaissanceunitsforprotectionduties.However,
withtheformationofthefirstJastasinthelatesummer
of1916theyjoinedtheFokkerDIllsandDIVs,and
someofthefirstAlbatrosDIs,toformamotley,
compositeequipagefortheseunits.Bytheendof1916
theHalberstadtD.IIandD.IIIhadbecomeobsolescent
andwerelargelywithdrawnfromtheWesternFrontor
relegatedtoquietersectors.However,whileon
operationstheywereabletogiveagoodaccountof
themselvesandwerecertainlyrespectedbytheirAllied
adversaries.
