Congratulations! Withyourpurchase ofthe Beseler
Dichro 45S Colorhead you have acquired a truly
versatile colorhead. The Dichro 45Sisa solid-state,
dichroiccolorheadincorporating a self-contained,
stabilized powersupply and coolingsystem. It
represents the latest in electronictechnology
applied to colorprinting.
The colorhead is designed to workequally well with
the Beseler45V-XL, or 45M seriesenlargers and
installation is simple. The Dichro 45S offersdiffusion
or condenser(optional)color and black and white
printing for formats ranging fromsub-miniature to
4"x5" negatives.
We stronglyrecommendthat you thoroughlyread
thisinstructionmanual to fullyacquaintyourself
with the colorhead and learn howto takeadvantage
of its manycapabilities.
If you desire tobeginprintingimmediatelywith your
Dichro45S, we suggest that you familiarize yourself
with the colorhead andits controls(Figures 1and2
withdescriptions) and thenfollow the directions in

I. INSTALLATION
INSTRUCTIONS
The Dichro 45S Colorhead isa self-containedunit,
andis shippedwith a 4x5 diffusion mixingchamber
and250 wattlamp in place. To mount the colorhead
onto a Beseler 4x5 enlarger for diffusion printing,
just followthesesimpleinstructions:
A. If your enlarger is equippedwith a Resistrol
accessory, unplug it,asit cannot be used in con-
junction with the colorhead.
B. Adjust the negative stage of the enlarger to the
4"x5" position onthe negativesizescale. Lock the
negative stage in place by tightening the negative
stage lockknob on yourenlarger.
NOTE: The illuminationsystem ofthe colorhead
requiresthat the upperbellowsremain inthe4x5
position (fully collapsed)duringdiffusionprinting
with all negative sizes.
C. Remove thetwo screws holding the negative size
scale in place and detachscale.
If your enlarger does not have a condenser lamp-
house, pull forward the housing latches and go on
to step E.
D. Unplug the condenserlamphousepowercord
and remove the lamphouse/condenser assembly by
pulling the supportlatchesforward(seeFig. 3)and
lifting the assembly clear ofthe enlargers. Store the
assembly ina safe,dust-freeplace.
E. Place the colorhead onthe enlarger so that the
colorhead mountingcollar(Fig. 1, item 11) slides
into the opening inthe supportstage.

F. Once the colorhead is sittingsquarely onthe
enlarger, lock itin place by pushing the latchesback.
G. The lamp andthe electronicpowersupplies in
the colorhead are stabilized. DONOTusean exter-
nal stabilizedpowersupply. The Dichro 45Shastwo
line cords—one forAC linevoltage, the other to con-
nect tothe timer. The powercord(Fig. 1, item 9)is
on the right and should be pluggedinto the conve-
nienceoutlet onthe enlargermotor box(on 45MXT)
or toa grounded AC outlet. The grey timer cord (Fig.
1, item 10)isonthe leftunderside ofthe colorhead
andis inserted inthe "Enlarger" outlet on your
timer. See Figure 4 for typical AC connections. You
are now ready to begindiffusionprintingwithyour
Dichro 45S.

II. CONTROLS AND
COMPONENT
DESCRIPTIONS
A. POWERSWITCH Two positionswitch(OFF,
ON). Activates blower andall circuitry.
B. FILTRATIONCONTROLS By turning the appro-
priateknob, any desiredamount of yellow, magenta
or cyanfiltration maybe introducedinto the light
path.Indicatorwindowsabovecontrols are labeled
"Y", "M" and"C" respectively.
C WHITELIGHT LEVER/PAPER SAVER CIRCUIT
The WhiteLightLeverremoves the dichroic filters
from the lightpath for easy"white light" focusing.
Pushing the leverawayfrom you moves the filters
outofthe lightpath.Pulling the levertoward you
returns the filters to theiroriginalposition.
The uniquePaperSaverCircuitbuilt into the Dichro
45S willprevent the lampfromturning onifthe filter
retractor is left inthe "White Light" position. Ifyou
shouldforget to return the filterretractor tothe
"Filtration"positionafterfocusing, the colorhead
will not permit youto waste a sheet of paperwith a
"white light" exposure.Instead, an indicator onthe
frontpanel ofthe colorheadwilllight up, reminding
youto reset the timer and return the retractor tothe
forward position. Notethat whilethecolorhead can-
notbe turned on with the filtersretracted, the filters
may be retractedwhen the colorhead is turned on.
The PaperSaverCircuitputs anendto paperwaste
caused by unfilteredexposures.
D. MIXINGCHAMBERS A special 4x5 diffusion
mixingchamber is standardwith the Dichro45S.
Accessory mixingchambers for6x7and 35mmdif-
fusion printing (Catalog#8292 and 8291respec-
tively) anda condenserchamber(Catalog#8294)
are availablefromyour Beseler dealer. All chambers
include IR andUV filtration.
E. COOLINGSYSTEM The Dichro 45S cooling sys-
temisof flow-throughdesign,incorporating a self-
containedrotaryfan. The fan,located onthe left
side ofthe housing,drives in cool air through the
inlet onthe left,across the electronics andthe lamp
andoutthe exhaustvent onthe right. The blower is
secured on vibrationmountswhichpreventundue
vibrationfromreaching the negative and lensstages
and distorting the image.
F. STABILIZEDPOWERSUPPLY The voltage for
the colorhead'slamp and electronics are internally
stabilized over anAC line voltagerange of ±10%
from the normal. A separatestabilizedpowersupply
is not required.
G. FILTRATION INDICATORWINDOWS The analogy
dials are back-lightedwhen the mainpowerswitch ison.
III. CHANGING MIXING
CHAMBERS
The Dichro 45S comeswith a 4x5 diffusionmixing
chamber as standardequipment.Optionaldiffusion
chambers for6x7and 35mm formats anda Con-
denser MixingChamber are availablefromyour
Beseler dealer.
Whenever you wish to changemixing Chambers, be
sure the powerswitch isinthe "Off"position and
follow the procedureoutlinedbelow.
A. Open the accessdoor by unscrewing thetwo thumb
screws located ontopofthe colorhead.Carefullylift
out the chamber.
B. Pick upthe otherchamber and makesure the mixing
chamberwindow(heatabsorbing glass—Fig. 2, item
15) andthe locating pin (Fig. 2, item 14)areonthe
right;that is, toward the lamp.
C. Insert the chamberinto the colorhead and engage
the locating pininthe slot onthe rightside ofthe
chamber areahousing.Slide the chamberintoplace.
D. Close the accessdoor and tighten thetwo thumb
screws to secure.

The followinginformationshouldhelp youtoget
started makingcolorprints from negativeswithyour
new Dichro 45S colorhead.
A. Put your negative into the enlarger.Size,com-
pose and focus the image as usual.
B. Dial inthe recommendedstartingfilterpack of
SOY + 40Mfor KodakRA-4paper. Set yourlens
tof/8inthe DIFFUSIONmode and f/16 inthe CON-
DENSERmode.
C. Make a teststrip for density,varyingonly the
exposure time(not the lensaperture orthe filter
pack).
D. Evaluate the teststrip for density.
Lit any section ofthe test strip showsexactly the
rightdensity,you're all donetesting.Record
the exposuretimewhichproduced it.
2. Ifone section of the teststrip is too light andthe
adjoiningsection istoo dark, an intermediate
exposure time is required. For example: Ifthe
exposuretime forthe lightsection was10
seconds andthe exposuretime forthe dark
section was20 seconds, the properexposure
timewill be somewhere in between 10and20
seconds. (Ifin doubt, you might want to make a
secondteststripusingintermediateexposure
times such as 12-14-16-18 seconds.)
3. Ifall foursections aretoo light, open upthe
aperture of yourenlarginglens bytwo full
f/stops and repeat the testusing the same
exposuretimes.(Theoriginalteststrip was
underexposed.)
4. Ifall foursections aretoo dark,closedown the
aperture of yourenlarginglens bytwo full
f/stops and repeat the testusing the same ex-
posuretimes(theoriginalteststrip was over-
exposed).
5. Once the aperture setting and exposure time
have beendetermined, the nextstep isto
identify the PREDOMINANTcolor onthe cor-
rectly exposedsection ofthe teststrip.
E. Identify the PredominantColor.
If yourteststriphappens tobe perfectlycolor-
balanced, youare immediatelyready to make a
color print withoutmaking any adjustment tothe
filter pack.It's far morelikely,however,thatyour
test stripwillhave a preodminant color castwhich
you willwant to removebeforemaking yourfull-size
color print. You mustfirst identify the predominant
colorcast and thenrefer tothe COLORBALANC-
ING table for directions onhowto remove it.
The tableshowswhatadjustments are necessary to
colorcorrectprintsmadefromnegatives or slides.

Experience will show how much ofan adjustment is
necessary for prints requiring varying degrees of
correction and what starting filter pack tousein
making a first print. Note that there aretwo possibi-
lities for eachcorrection. Donot dial inthe third filter
value since the combination of filtration (Y + M+C)
will result in neutral density causing loss of illumina-
tion andthe need to increaseexposure.
If you havejuststartedcolorprinting, itisa good
idea to save thoseprintswithwhich youarenot
satisfied. Onthe backmark the filtration andex-
posuretimewithwhichtheyweremade and com-
pare them to your final prints. This isthe best
method of learning the effects of changingfiltra-
tion (andexposure) on yourDichro 45S Colorhead.

V. BLACK AND WHITE
PRINTING
The Dichro 45Smaybe used for black and white
printing in either the Condenser (optional) or Dif-
fusion mode.Because ofthe nature ofthe black and
white negative, a condensersystemprovideshigher
contrast and moreapparent definition However,
where dust and scratches maybea problem, orfor
negatives that have beenretouched, a diffusionsys-
tem willproducecleanerlooking prints and
minimize the necessity for spotting.
It is generallydesirable tosetall filtration dials toget
readouts as close as possible to "000"duringblack
and whiteprinting.Whenprintingwithvariablecon-
trast papers, the colorhead canbe used to control
contrast, without the need ofan additional setof
filters. The tablesbelowshowwhatfiltrationsettings
will approximatevariouspapergrades on AgfaMulti-
contrast, llford Multigrade, and KodakPolycontrast
papers.

VI. MAINTENANCE
The Dichro 45S requires virtually no regularmain-
tenance, otherthan tobe kept free of dustwhen not
in use. The onlymaintenanceprocedure isto
change the lampwhen it burnsout.
LampChangingProcedure
(Beseler Catalog No. 8108)
1. Allow the lamp to coolprior to attempting to
change it.
2. Disconnect the powercord asa safety pre-
caution.
3. Open the accessdoor ontopofthe colorhead by
turning the latches 90° (seeFig. 5)
4. Locate the lampcompartment and lift up door
(Fig. 2, item 16).
5. Pull lamp ejector(item 18)to right and remove
old lamp. See Fig. 6.
6. Insert new lampfirmlyintosocketuntilpins are
fully seated.Closelampdoor;close and lock access
door.
