Instructions for using
the self-sampling device
• With the self-sampling device, you can easily and reliably collect
vaginal material yourself. This material will be tested for HPV
(human papilloma virus) in the lab.
• The self-sampling device is for personal use only.
The bar code label is linked to your personal details.

The self-sampling device
consists of a transparent
casing with wings. On the
side of the brush, a pink
cap is clicked onto the
casing.
The brush has been made
so that you will be able to
collect a sufficient amount
of vaginal material.
Important: do not touch
the brush with your
hands. This may affect
the result of the test.

There are a few things you should know in advance
• Do not use during menstruation.
• Do not use while you are pregnant, or in the subsequent three months
after pregnancy.
• Stop using vaginal products 2 days before using the self-sampling device.
You may continue to use vaginal contraceptive, condoms, and a water-
based lubricant.
• The self-sampling device can only be used once. Reuse may result in
infection or an incorrect result.
• The self-sampling device is provided in sterile packaging. Do not use the
kit if the packaging has been damaged or the expiry date has lapsed.
How to carry out the test?

First, wash your hands with water.

Remove the self-sampling device from its packaging.
Keep the packaging. You will need it again to send the
self-sampling device after use.

Press the sides of the pink cap with your thumb and
index finger and take it off. Do not push the brush
outwards.

Assume a comfortable position, for example like
when inserting a tampon.
You can use the self-sampling device seated, standing
or lying down.


Spread your labia with one hand.
Use your other hand to insert the upper part of the
casing into the vagina until the wings are pressed
against the labia.

Hold the transparent casing at the bottom with one
hand. Use your other hand to push the pink knob
against the casing, until it touches the transparent
casing and cannot be pushed further. The brush will
emerge from the casing. You will hear and/or feel a soft
click when the brush is in the right position.

Turn the pink knob 5 times in the same direction.
Youwill hear and/or feel a soft click after every turn.
Thebrush is turning round and is collecting a sufficient
amount of vaginal material.
Subsequently, remove the casing from your vagina.

Do not touch the brush with your hands.
Hold the transparent casing with one hand, and use the
other hand to pull on the pink knob, so that the white
brush disappears in the casing again.

Continue to hold the transparent casing to ensure that
the white brush does not slide out of the casing again.
Put the pink cap back with your thumb and index finger.
You will hear and/or feel a click.

Put the self-sampling device back into its packaging.


Put the packaging into the transparent plastic bag with
the blue edge. The white absorption cloth must remain
in the plastic bag. Close the bag properly.

Put the bag with the self-sampling device in the return
envelope.
Stick the address label you will find on your letter to
this envelope.

Return the self-sampling device in the return envelope
within one week. In the meantime, keep it at room
temperature.
No postage stamp is required.
Result of the self-sampling device
You will receive the result by letter
from the screening organisation
within 3 weeks. Your family doctor
will not receive any information on
the result of the screening. This is for
privacy reasons: your family doctor is
not the person who requested the
screening and collected the material.
